    KING GUIDE TO RUST PREVENTIVES

The tremendous cost to society due to rustand corrosion of metals has in the past andcontinues today to energize research intobetter corrosion preventives. King Industrieshas been a leader in new technologies de-signed to preserve metals for over a half of acentury. This product guide has been de-signed to keep you informed of some thelatest technologies available from King whileproviding useful information about NA-SUL®

rust and corrosion inhibitors, long recognizedas the performance standard for unexcelledprotection.

For over six decades King Industries’sNA-SUL dinonynaphthalenesulfonates havebeen used in hundreds of formulations be-cause of their unique abilities as hydrophobicpolar compounds to prevent rust and corro-sion. Unlike, other sulfonates, NA-SUL prod-ucts are high molecular weight syntheticswith a narrow molecular weight distributionthat results in:

    • Extremely hydrophobic coatings

    • Coatings that resist reemulsification re-pelling water for long time periods

    • Batch to batch consistency with highquality predictable performance

Additionally, as markets needs have changedand the quest for more environmentally andhealth friendly additives has become preva-lent, King has kept pace with those trends by:

    • Developing a unique line of rust preven-tive additives for aqueous systems

    • Developed additives specifically designedto be used with vegetable based oils

    • Developed a 100% ashless non-sulfonate

    corrosion inhibitor that is>90% biodegradable

Perhaps, just as important as the product ad-vances in rust preventive technology is acompany’s commitment to provide the techni-cal service and expertise to support thoseproducts. That is why King maintains a stateof the art, RP technical service lab that in ad-dition to expected North American test equip-

ment has unexpected equipment such as aKesternich Cabinet to fulfill different test re-quirements from different parts of the world.

Likewise, King technical personnel are readyto assist you in anyway they can with yourformulation needs and can be contacted at:

    Rust and Corrosion Preventive Additives

King Industries NA-SUL® rust preventive additives are based on salts of dinonylnaphthalenesulfonate(DNNS®) with additional polar compounds chosen to provide rust preventive synergy. This results inextremely hydrophobic rust preventive coatings that effectively exclude water and air from reachingthe metal surface. The resulting performance advantage allows levels of metal protection thatcompetitive additives cannot achieve and /or reductions in additive use level that result in significantformulation savings. In addition, King Industries offers a line of specialty rust and corrosion inhibitorsbased on non-sulfonate chemistry under the K-CORR® brand.

    CA-1082

A 67% active complex of Calcium DNNS/carboxylatein light naphthenic oil.

The synergy of polar materials used in NA-SUL CA-1082 allows for long termmetal protection in indoor or outdoor sheltered storage. It has excellent solubilityin most conventional diluents, but rust preventive performance is best innaphthenic or Group I paraffinic oils. It does not contain oxidized petrolatum, which improves solubility and reduces odor. NA-SUL CA-1082 does not gel oncontamination with water, but can gel if contaminated with highly basic materialssuch as caustic cleaners. For this reason it is not generally used in dewateringfluid applications. NA-SUL CA-1082 is easy to emulsify due to its acid value sothat it may be used in water-based rust preventives or as a rust preventive boosterfor metalworking fluids.
