In this session, the presenters will share a framework that takes the mystery out of how business models work so you can innovate the way you do business, regardless of organizational type. Identify your existing business model and learn about common business model types, including examples from other industries. Then explore business model innovation, including both product-based innovation as well as the less traditional systems and process innovation, which can bring attention to new or overlooked possibilities. Using a business model map and a “one-element-at-a-time” approach, you will assess how changing one component of your current model can generate new value for new customers. relationships • Discuss best practices to optimize client-vendor relationships The use of external vendors (eg, consultants, agencies) is a common practice and a fundamental part of doing business. Less common is the recognition that successful client-vendor relationships require time and work by both parties: it takes two to tango. As with personal relationships, the client-vendor relationship goes through stages that depend upon mutual communication and trust: courting (proposals and sales presentations), engagement (statements of work and contracts), marriage (conducting business) and break-up (ending projects). The ability to effectively engage, manage and motivate external partners and clients is an essential skill, yet there is little training on how to cultivate and sustain these relationships. In this workshop, you will explore both sides of the client-vendor relationship and identify strategies to optimize these business interactions. Successful client-vendor pairs will share their experiences and provide practical tips for building and strengthening client-vendor relationships. healthcare space The world of healthcare is changing, and change brings both challenges and opportunities. While the pharmaceutical, medical device and other traditional players in the healthcare industry have been hit by downsizing, startups and non-traditional healthcare companies are growing rapidly, with healthcare reform accelerating the change. This workshop features a panel of senior HBA members who will share their personal stories about board service including: their reasons for serving; how they secured their first board position; tips for preparing for board interviews with executive search firms and board members; board experiences and lessons learned; and how corporate board service has helped each grow professionally, either before they retired from full-time executive positions or as the first step in the next phase of their professional lives. Audience members will be invited to ask questions throughout the workshop as well as in a question-and-answer session at the end. This workshop will provide a unique opportunity for executive women to network with senior HBA members—including three HBA Woman of the Year award recipients—who are currently serving on public company boards. About the workshop leader: Dr. Catherine Sohn is currently a board member on four corporate boards—two NASDQ public companies and two private, for-profit companies—and Dean's Professor at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. She is a long-standing member of the HBA and a retired healthcare executive with medical affairs, business development, strategic marketing, and new product launch expertise in the pharmaceutical, vaccine and consumer healthcare divisions at GlaxoSmithKline.
