Chosen by Southern Living Magazine as the site for their 2010 Georgia Idea House, the Gin Property includes a variety of custom built luxury homes including brownstones, single-family detached homes, urban live/work townhomes, and factory lofts, all Earthcraft certified and designed to blend seamlessly with Senoia’s early 1900’s architecture.

elegant—it ’s exci t ing—and
it’s here. The Southern Living
Idea House has opened in Senoia. More than
30,000 visitors are expected to visit the house over the next few months, and what they’ll find is an innovative and fresh approach for everyday living. “people will see a home that’s very comfortable. It’s designed for a family to live in, yet maintains its understated elegance,” says Jamie Elliott Mcpherson, cKD, Allied ASID and principal of Hearth and Home Interiors in Newnan. He was selected by Southern Living as the interior designer for the Senoia Idea House project, part of the group of premier professionals who worked together to bring the Idea House to life. “There are places for the kids to do their homework or hang out and play wii and separate formal areas defined by features like antique pocket doors,” Jamie adds. ‘There’s even a spectacular lounge for the adults, where they can sit beneath an awning and enjoy their favorite cocktails under the night sky. All in all, the Idea House functions incredibly well for today’s families.”
Set in the heart of Senoia’s redevelopment, the Southern Living Idea House is a 3,700-square-foot, 3.5-story brownstone that boasts features such as a rooftop terrace and elevator, courtyard, garden and potting shed. Terry pylant, a partner with Historical concepts, the award-winning architectural firm that designed the Senoia Idea House for Southern Living, says that visitors can expect to see “something that isn’t done today. The house is very traditional in detail but is simple and timeless with a plan that’s open and light. It has a really nice feel spatially.” He explains that the nature of townhouses can be challenging, due to the footprint size and having an entire side or two without windows. But the team met their challenges head on. “we studied historical precedents to gain inspiration for the layout, and took a simple, centuries-old form and added modern conveniences,” Terry recounts. “connecting to the outdoors is particularly important, so the walled garden on the ground floor, as well as the upper roof terraces, became key to accomplishing that.” According to Jamie, the townhome’s size afforded him an opportunity to utilize his background in historic preservation, and find

multi-functional ways to maximize space with touches like hidden storage and window seats. And it was a real treat to work with everyone who helped bring it all together, including the Historical concepts team and the builder, John Bynum custom Homes. “John was able to get the home built in 6 months with a level of detail that’s incredible,” says Jamie. Terry also holds John Bynum in high esteem: “The builder has been a true professional, very resourceful with a real can-do attitude, especially considering the short timeframe. Likewise, it was great to work with Jamie and I can never say enough about the developers, paul Lombardi and Scott Tigchelaar. when you look at what they’ve done in Senoia, especially during such challenging times, you can’t help but be impressed. Everything they’ve done, they’ve done with class.” For Terry, one of the most thrilling aspects of this Idea House is its location. He says he’s most excited that it will bring people to Senoia to see ALL the exciting things happening in a fabulous little town that’s thriving with activity. Historic Downtown Senoia has been undergoing a celebrated revitalization, both along its Main Street and the adjacent Gin property, an 11-acre infill mixed-use
development of unique homes that was once the site of the McKnight cotton Gin. Senoia’s development has been spearheaded by paul Lombardi and Scott Tigchelaar, principals of Riverwood Studios in Senoia, which offers premier production facilities for everything from commercials and music videos to full-length films. Some of the feature films done at Riverwood include Fried Green Tomatoes and Sweet Home Alabama. while the Idea House is bringing a lot of attention to Senoia right now, the spotlight will continue. The Gin property and Main Street will be used as backdrops for upcoming film and TV projects. For example, Founder’s Restaurant & Bar on Main Street, with its early 1900’s theme featuring a 1920’s Brunswick bar, antique chandeliers, exposed brick and 12-foot curtains lining the walls, is a perfect setting for period dramas. “what could be better than living in a traditionally detailed new home with great, intimate outdoor spaces set in a genuine old town?” Terry asks, then answers: “You can’t beat ‘small town urban living’ where neighbors, shops and restaurants are all within easy walking distance.”

meant to inspire, and it’s full of touches and items that do just that. From the house’s design and construction to its décor, everything is expertly crafted and carefully chosen. Visitors will see architectural details as well as works by local artists and artisans at every turn, like photographs and oil paintings on the walls, sculptures and ceramics, fiber art—even specialty soaps from the Senoia-based country Junction. Honey corbin, one of the featured artists, says she’s thrilled to have her work placed in the Idea House. “For me, it’s the opportunity of a lifetime to get my art out there—and I’m just one of many artists who’s been included. There are a lot of talented folks in the coweta county area and Jamie has done a wonderful job using and showcasing our work.” Interior designer Jamie Mcpherson saw an oil painting from Honey’s “Disappearing Georgia” series at Beyond the Door, a downtown Senoia shop that carries a variety of original art. The depiction of an abandoned bus in a field in Haralson had just the kind of local flavor he was looking for. Beyond the Door owner Ann Busey says that several of the store’s items are placed in the Idea House, including a huge vintage sign marked “Horses & carriages To Let” and a wooden horse head. “Visitors will also see
several of our lamps there. Lamps are some of our most popular items at the shop, with good reason,” she adds with a smile. “Beyond the Door also carries the work of several other local artists whose work can be seen at the Idea House: Rhonda Moye, a potter who does amazing work; Georgie Dunn, a talented painter; and Gary Gruby, a wonderful photographer.” Two Turtle Doves in Newnan also contributed items to the Idea House. “In the Bohemian ‘tween room, there are two pillows and a doorstop from our collection,” says Julie Ruble. “They’re handmade in the U.S., hand-sewn with a patchwork pattern in a cool selection of fabrics.” Julie operates Two Turtle Doves with the other co-owners, Lara Dreggors and Gay Koran. “Our shop is a lifestyle boutique for your home and closet,” she explains. Jamie promises that as visitors tour the Idea House, they’ll encounter no end of interesting things, large and small, from murals and the reclaimed antique pine used throughout the house to intriguing objets d’art. He stresses that all the art in the in house is original. “One of my favorite parts of this project was getting to work with all the different artists, many of them local, who range from unknown to well-known and respected.”

The relaxed pace of Senoia might lull you into thinking there’s not much going on here—but that’s far from the truth. There are attractions and events that visitors and residents enjoy throughout the year.
Right on Main Street, the Buggy Shop Museum is open from April to October on the third weekend of the month, from 3pm to whenever. Visitors can view the collection of items from circa 1890 to 1930, with such favorites as antique autos and buggies and coca-cola collectibles.
The New Senoia Raceway is undergoing some changes. It’s gone back to a dirt track and has racing action every Saturday night starting at 6pm.
On Saturdays and Sundays, you can get a taste of the good old days with “Nottingham Shire and carriage for Hire.” Enjoy a
15-minute ride through the downtown area, visiting historical homes along the way. The carriage stop is on the corner of Main and Travis streets across from Senoia coffee & café.
On June 25, an Art Show at Beyond the Door will feature artists whose work is also displayed in Senoia’s Southern Living Idea House. The cultural Arts committee of the Downtown Development Authority has several events planned for the summer.
On July 10, there’s a Movie Night showing of Sweet Home Alabama. It’s free – everyone can bring their lawn chairs and refreshments. Sponsorship tables are available; contact Ann Busey at Beyond the Door to learn more.
cruisin’ to the Oldies car Show takes place on September 25th in
downtown Senoia. It features more than 200 vintage and antique cars, along with great music and food.
Surrounding Areas: Newnan
In Newnan, the centre for the performing & Visual Arts of coweta county is an impressive facility that includes a diverse art gallery and a 1000-seat, state-of-the-art theater.
Main Street Newnan plans events that are fun for the whole family, such as Market Days, and pickin’ on the Square which meets up for a musical good time — both at the courthouse Square. Main Street is also responsible for the Taste of Newnan, Art walk and other events.
Surrounding Areas: Peachtree City & Fayette County
The Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater,
known as “The Fred,” in peachtree city and Villages Amphitheatre in Fayetteville. Both host world-class acts as well as community events.
Every year in October, the Great Georgia Air Show brings a weekend of family fun and entertainment with aerial acrobatics, powerful jets and more. peachtree city also has the International Festival and Dragon Boat Races, hosted by the Rotary club of peachtree city, and the Shakerag Festival.
Sporting Opportunities
Senoia’s parks afford families the opportunity to get out, get active and have fun. Leroy Johnson park, the location of the East coweta Senior center and the ballfields is just west of downtown on Howard Road. Marimac Lakes park has walking trails and fishing lakes at
