Abstract The collection consists of materials that pertain to the life and work
of Herbert Merton Greene, M.D., centering around Greene’s work
as a civilian and military physician as well as membership in the
Freemasonry and the Anglo-Saxon Christian Association. Materials
include publications; personal and professional photographs; licenses,
degrees, certificates, honors, and awards; correspondence; autobiographies
of Greene and both wives, Jeanne Todd Booth and Julia Cooper; news
clippings; and artifacts.

Biographical note
Herbert Merton Greene was born October 5, 1878 in Mitchell County, North Carolina. He attended publicschools in North Carolina and Washington.
Out of a class of 17, Greene was among the University of Oregon Medical School class of 1904graduates. After serving his internship at Multnomah County Hospital, the North Pacific Sanitarium, andDr. Coffey Hospital, Greene completed post-graduate work at the Vanderbilt Clinic in New York.
In addition to serving as chief surgeon at Camp Lewis during World War I, Greene had a private practicein rural Lacrosse, WA before returning to Portland in 1918. From 1918 until his retirement in 1957,Greene taught at the medical school, maintained a private practice in the Medical Arts Building, and ran asmall business out of his home, selling barbicide and pharmaceutical preparations.
Greene was also very active in the community with organizations such as the Freemasons and the Anglo-Saxon Christian Association. Among other accomplishments, Greene developed the Greene specialpuncture needle, which was designed to minimize trauma associated with spinal taps.
He died in 1962 at the age of 87 after a long struggle with deteriorating health and diminished eyesight- the after effects of radiation exposure from his time as operator of the first x-ray machine on the WestCoast, back in 1898.

Scope and Contents
The collection consists of materials that pertain to the life and work of Herbert Merton Greene, M.D.,centering around Greene’s work as a civilian and military physician as well as membership in theFreemasonry and the Anglo-Saxon Christian Association. Materials include publications, includingmedical and other books, pamphlets, leaflets, journals, and newsletters. Also included are personaland professional photographs; medical and laboratory equipment and supplies; licenses, degrees,certificates, honors, and awards given to Greene and his wife, Jeanne Todd Booth; official and personalcorrespondence; autobiographies of Greene and both wives, Jeanne Todd Booth and Julia Cooper; newsclippings; Greene’s obituary and that of his first and second wife; and artifacts.

Herbert Merton Greene's granddaughter, Karen Kullberg Faw, donated the materials. They were receivedby History of Medicine Librarian, Sara Piasecki and Archivist, Karen Peterson on March 30 and 31, 2006.Additional materials were donated on April 27, 2006. Karen Peterson processed the collection in Marchand April of 2006.

2. Some photographs were scanned and the resulting files were given to the donor. The originals wereretained by the Archives.
