MS – 152: Papers of Harold A. Dunkelberger ‘36 ( 12 boxes, 10.5 cubic feet) Inclusive Dates: 1895-2000 Bulk Dates: 1936-2000 Processed by: Jenna Fleming ‘16 April, 2014 Provenance This collection consists of items both purchased and donated from Harold A. Dunkelberger’s estate. Working thought Library Director, Robin Wagner, throughout the summer of 2013, Harold R. Dunkelberger donated the bulk of the material including his father’s research and travel papers and departmental records which were separated and added to the Department of Religion records. Donated materials also included books and a stole. Items from Betty Dunkelberger’s involvement with the formation of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority were also included in the original donation. Additional items were given by Harold R. Dunkelberger, through Robin Wagner, at intervals over the summer and included diplomas and a relief sculpture (possibly from India). During the estate auction items were purchased for the collection including one of Dunkelberger’s footlockers from his time in the Army and multiple shoe boxes full of family letters. These letters were written to and from members of the Dunkelberger, Rebert, and Lightner families and date from the 1890s through the 1950s. A scrapbook containing photos of the Aberly and Dunkelberger families, including many from their missionary work in India, was loaned to Special Collections following the auction. It was photographed and is included here on DVD and as a print out of the digital surrogate. Biography Harold Aberly Dunkelberger was born on May 9, 1915, in Bangalore, India, to Christian missionaries Rev. Dr. Roy and Amy (Aberly) Dunkelberger. After living in India with his parents for his early childhood, Harold spent his youth living in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania with his grandparents, Dr. John and Alice Strauss Aberly, and his sister, Lida. Dr. John Aberly was a graduate of Gettysburg College class of 1888 and Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg 1889 and served as a missionary to India before becoming president of the Seminary in 1926, a post he would hold until 1940. Harold Dunkelberger attended the Gettysburg Academy and went on to earn a degree in English from Gettysburg College, graduating summa cum laude 1936. He was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa, Phi Beta Kappa, and Der Deutsche Verein. During his senior year, he served as the president of both Eta Sigma Phi, the National Honorary Classics Fraternity, and Tau Kappa Alpha, the National Honorary Forensic Fraternity. The 1937 Spectrum lists his participation in

organizations including the tennis team, rifle team, debating club, and orchestra at different times during his college career. While attending Gettysburg, Dunkelberger was recognized with the Muhlenberg Freshman Prize, the Brewer Greek Prize, and the Garver Greek Prize. He would continue his studies at the Lutheran Theological Seminary, from which he graduated in 1939, before going on to earn his doctorate in theology from Columbia University in 1950. In 1962 he completed a post-doctoral study at Oxford University in England, and in 1979 he was presented with an honorary degree from Susquehanna University. Following his marriage to Betty Rebert of Newport, PA in 1940, Harold Dunkelberger became the pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mechanicsburg, PA in 1941. He served as an Army Air Corps chaplain in World War II from 1942 to 1946, after which he resumed his post in Mechanicsburg. After the completion of his doctoral degree in 1950, Dunkelberger was hired as an associate professor of Biblical Literature and Religion at his alma mater, Gettysburg College. He served as the College’s Director of Development and Alumni relations beginning in 1958 before being promoted to professor of Religion in 1960. Three years later he was elected head of the Religion Department, a position he would hold until his retirement in 1983. Dunkelberger also served as a College Marshal from 1972 to 1983, and in 1979 he was appointed the College’s Director of Church Relations. In 1978 he published One Body We: A History of the Central Pennsylvania Synod, 1938 – 1978, a study on the Lutheran Church in Pennsylvania. After his retirement he was presented with the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching, and in 1991 he was recognized by the Gettysburg College Alumni Association with the Meritorious Service Award. Following his retirement, he remained a professor emeritus of the Religious Studies Department. Harold Dunkelberger was active in the community throughout his life. He was a member of several organizations including the Rotary Club, serving as the president of the Gettysburg chapter from 1957 to 1958 and the Governor of Rotary District 739 from 1972 to 1973. Dunkelberger was a thirty-third degree Mason and held several leadership positions within this association, as well as serving as a board member for the Adams County United Way and Adams County Office for the Aging and president of the Senior Adult Community Theater Society of Adams County. He was involved with administrative aspects of Gettysburg College and the Lutheran Church, attending and helping to plan several conferences based on guidelines for Lutheran higher education. He traveled extensively in order to complete research for his academic work, visiting India, Japan, and China, as well as several countries in Europe and Africa. Dunkelberger also traveled with his family, visiting locations such as Germany with his wife Betty and their two children, Harold “Hal” R. Dunkelbergerand Lida Dunkelberger. Betty Rebert Dunkelberger was born in March of 1915 to Clarence H. and Grace Lightner Rebert of Newport, Pennsylvania. She attended Newport High School and graduated first in her class before attending Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania from 1933 to 1937. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Teaching and worked for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, first in the Treasury Department and later in the Department of the Auditor

General. After her marriage in 1940, she moved to Mechanicsburg, PA, with Harold, where she was active in civic organizations including the Junior Women’s Club. She later worked as a substitute teacher in the Gettysburg Area School District while Harold was employed at the College. She was a member of the board of directors within several organizations including the American Association of University Women and the Medical College of Pennsylvania, and she served as an advisor for the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Following Harold’s retirement in 1983, the Dunkelbergers continued living in Gettysburg until Betty’s death in march of 2000. Harold Dunkelberger passed away on October22, 2012. Scope and Content Notes This collection includes materials relating to Harold A. Dunkelberger’s life and work in relation to Gettysburg College and the Lutheran Church, as well as his personal and family relationships. It contains notes and records used while he was a professor in and later head of the Religion Department, as well as information about aspects of College administration and alumni relations in which he was involved. Additionally, Gettysburg College publications for events with which Dunkelberger was not directly connected are present in the collection. Academic correspondence with faculty at Gettysburg and other institutions is included, as well as several pieces Dunkelberger reviewed prior to publication. Planning materials and minutes from a variety of conferences attended by Dunkelberger make up one series, as does memorabilia from the travels he undertook as part of his work. The collection also contains a great deal of information about Dunkelberger’s personal experiences and family history. There is little material available about his time studying at Gettysburg College, but some relating to his alumni status is present. Information about his community involvement before and after his retirement can be found within the collection, as can a record of Betty Dunkelberger’s extensive participation in community service and her family history. Photographs and photocopies of newspaper articles primarily concerning Harold A. Dunkelberger and members of his family each have their own series; photographs date from approximately the 1930s to the 1990s and newspaper articles date from approximately 1916 to 2000. Personal correspondence forms a substantial part of the collection. The letters included were primarily written between Harold and Betty (Rebert) Dunkelberger, but the collection includes the correspondence of Betty’s relatives of the Rebert and Lightner families. The collection offers a broad biographical picture of Harold A. Dunkelberger, though information about his life prior to his graduation from Gettysburg College in 1936 is scarcer. It gives insight to the operations of the College, particularly its Religion Department, from about 1960 to 1983. From studying the collection, one is able to draw conclusions about the history of the Dunkelberger, Aberly, Rebert, and Lightner families, as well as relationships between individuals connected to Dunkelberger himself. Overall, it provides a depiction of the active life of Harold A. Dunkelberger and his contributions to the institutions he served. More information about Harold A. Dunkelberger and his family is available in several locations. Special Collections holds transcripts of five interviews conducted with Dunkelberger during the

Page 5: Guide to the Papers of Harold A. Dunkelberger ‘36...Sigma Kappa, Phi Beta Kappa, and Der Deutsche Verein. During his senior year, he served as the president of both Eta Sigma Phi,
