Lets look at i t from a few dif ferent viewpoints

Home User The home user with Windows 7 or Windows 8 can opt for a free upgrade to Windows 10

from the 29th of July. This will appear in the bottom right corner of the windows 7/8 PC

and will upgrade Windows similar to a Windows update. So what are the main changes:

i. The Start button is back

ii. Internet Explorer has been replaced by Edge

iii. It is more secure than before

iv. It will run all your existing applications

v. Websites as of yet have not been tested by Nostra therefore people with online

banking etc. should ensure they support Windows 10 prior to upgrade

Business User

Your IT admin will have an option to upgrade from July 29th, however most

businesses will not choose this option until they are sure all websites and

business applications will work

Same as Home users

IT Manager

Windows upgrades are no longer a job for an IT manager

The new windows requires more time in planning and authorising updates.

Updates now come in “Waves” and you can opt to get update several months

after released or purely on an approval basis

Business Owner

Windows 10 is a free upgrade

Windows 10 is more secure than all previous versions of Windows

Online banking needs to be tested prior to upgrade

Some but very little training may be required by the users

Nostra advise companies to get professional assistance or have their internal IT

department plan a migration for September/October to ensure that all possible

challenges are addressed professionally

Further Changes

The Windows 8. “Double screen” – split personality is gone

Multiple desktops – Up to 8 can be managed at once. The taskbar at the bottom can

be configured to show only apps open on that screen or all apps

It may be that users will end up with a 30” screen rather than 2 x 20” as you can

clip 3 or 4 screens together on one Monitor

Microsoft Outlook – when you hit attach file it shows you the most recent

documents used on the PC

Nostra’s View

Windows 10 is a great update to Windows 8.1 and should be adopted by all organisations, but it is key to plan a migration and ensure that adequate support is in place to have a successful transition. Windows 10 will also require slightly better planning from IT departments to roll out updates, but it is an excellent leap forward and works with all existing applications
