Building Background

What is Guided

Reading?

Page 5: Guided Reading Running Records Project L.I.F.T. Objectives Participants will … Explain what guided reading is and its purpose. Explain why running records

Building BackgroundThe ultimate goal in guided

reading is to help children learn how to use independent reading strategies successfully.

The overall purpose is to enable children to read for meaning at all times.

What is the purpose of

guided reading?

This reminds me of the time when I went fishing.

I wonder what will happened

next.

Running Records• When a student reads aloud, a teacher can

observe reading behaviors and make note of what the student is thinking and doing.

• Oral reading miscues reveal a student’s reading strategies.

• Miscues can be analyzed to make instructional decisions that are “tailored” to the student’s needs.

On your mark, get set… Go!!!

My GoldfishSee my new pet? This is my goldfish.I will name my goldfish Goldie. My goldfish has gills.Gills help fish breathe in water. My goldfish has fins.Fins help fish swim. I have a tank for Goldie. The tank is her home.I put rocks at the bottom of the tank.I put a plant in the tank, too. Goldie swims in her new home.Sometimes Goldie hides behind the plant.I feed Goldie goldfish food.Goldie swims up to eat the food. Sometimes I have to put clean water in the tank.I use a net to take Goldie out of the tank.I try not to scare Goldie.

Practice makes perfect!

I've traveled the world twice over, Met the famous; saints and sinners, Poets and artists, kings and queens,

Old stars and hopeful beginners,

I've been where no-one's been before, Learned secrets from writers and cooks

All with one library ticket To the wonderful world of books.”
