Peer Review – Some Thoughts on Preparation

Peer Review, otherwise known as NACE CIP Level 3, is a face-to-face interview with three prettyknowledgeale people, !ost often fro! the "#A$ %here are proaly aro&nd 3' people who reg&larlyserve as Peers in the CIP progra!, all of who! have (&alified as NACE Certified )Level 3* Coatinginspectors, and !ost of who! have een thro&gh the f&ll progra! as st&dents$ %hey have also takenPeer Review, so they have e+perience of the sit&ation fro! oth sides$

Peer Review can e inti!idating$ Its si!ilar to a o interview, and i!portant to everyone that takes it$ Itis easy for !e to say .try not to e nervo&s, &t not !any people have !anaged that, incl&ding !e and!ost of the Peers/ If yo& recogni0e that yo& !ay e nervo&s, then yo&r task is to deal with that and geton with the o$ 1o& !&st e ale to f&nction on the day, when yo& are faced with e+plaining yo&rself to 3.strangers$ Preparation is the key$ 2e knowledgeale ao&t the s&ect areas, and ao&t the interviewsit&ation, and e prepared to de!onstrate that yo& know yo&r st&ff$

%here are g&idelines for taking Peer Review in iss&es of the inspector !aga0ine, Inspect%his, on theNACE we site$ %hese !ay give a little flavor of the event fro! the Peers point of view$ Its not !&chfoc&sed, however, on the act&al st&dy process$ I wo&ld reco!!end the following co&rse of action

 4$ 5ake a list of potential s&ect areas$ Re!e!er that all of the technical infor!ation in the two

!an&als )Level I and Level II* is a potential s&ect for asking technical (&estions )in the first halfof the e+a!*$ 5any of the (&estions yo& !ay e asked are ased on standard ind&strye(&ip!ent and !aterials, s&ch as spray application e(&ip!ent, or water-etting !ethods, orepo+y coatings$ If these are not all fa!iliar to yo& )eca&se yo& work in a specific environ!ent,s&ch as the R$N$ 6ockyard, or offshore* yo& sho&ld try to get at least eno&gh knowledge to tryand e+plain the s&ect$

eca&se they are !ore like the case st&dies in the co&rse$ 1o& already have so!e e+perience of talking thro&gh these sit&ations, and co!ing &p with a sensile answer, proaly in the for! of alist$ 6&ring NACE CIP, yo& proaly worked on this as part of a tea!$ Can each one of yo& dothat on yo&r own; Again, I wo&ld reco!!end that yo& have a little practice at that, first drea!ing&p so!e potential (&estions, then taking t&rns to prepare an answer$

 >$ 8hen preparing for the Peer Review e+a!, and !ost i!portantly while yo& are in the e+a!,

re!e!er two things$ <irstly, yo& are a coating inspector/ 8hatever yo&r nor!al o e+perience,

yo&ll have to i!agine yo&rself as the independent NACE inspector that we talked ao&t in theclassroo!$ 1o& !ay not have the sa!e a&thority as in yo&r daily work$ At the sa!e ti!e, yo&!ay e re(&ired to s&ggest sol&tions to prole!s as tho&gh yo& had all the a&thority in theworld$ #econdly, re!e!er that NACE inspectors !ay work in !any sit&ations, differentco&ntries, different str&ct&res, etc$ Its good to !ention and draw on yo&r own field e+perience,&t yo& sho&ld think ao&t the .other sit&ations that !ight apply$ <or e+a!ple, if yo&r work is!ainly on ships, think ao&t how it !ight e on an elevated water tower$ If yo& !ainly work ons!all co!ponents, think ao&t how it wo&ld e on h&ge str&ct&res )or vice-versa*$ If yo& work!ainly with sophisticated, pl&ral co!ponent coatings, think ao&t the &ses and application ofsingle pack !aintenance coatings and &nskilled lao&r, etc$ etc$

(&estion again, and secondly take a short while )4 or 7 !in&tes* to !ake a list of what yo& wantto say$ %he Peers often say .If we ask yo& what ti!e it is, dont tell &s how to &ild a watch$

 Answer the (&estion that they ask$
