    MANGLEV

    Magnetic levitation

    Maglev(derivedfrom magnetic levitation)is a system of

transportation thatuses magneticlevitation to suspend, guide and propel vehicles

with magnets rather thanusing mechanicalmethods, such as wheels, axles and bearings.

    HISTORY

    The world's first

    commercial automated

    maglev system was a low-

    speed maglev shuttle that

    ran from the airport

    terminal of Birmingham

    International Airport to

    the nearby Birmingham

    International railway

    station between 1984

    TECHNOLOGY

    For electromagnetic suspension (EMS),

electronically controlled electromagnetsin the train attract it to a magnetically

    conductive (usually steel) track.

    Electrodynamic suspension (EDS) uses

    superconducting electromagnets or strong

    permanent magnets which create a

magnetic field that induces currents in

nearby metallic conductors when there is

relative movement which pushes and pulls

the train towards the designed levitation

    position on the guide way.

    Another experimental technology, which

    was designed, proven mathematically,

peer reviewed, and patented, but is yet tobe built, is themagnetodynamic

    suspension (MDS), which uses the

attractive magnetic force of a permanent

magnet array near a steel track to lift the

train and hold it in place. Other

    technologies such as repulsive permanent

    magnets and superconducting magnets

    have seen some research.

    ADVANTAGES OVER CONVENTIONAL

TRAINS Efficiency: Due to the lack of physical contact between the

track and the vehicle, maglev trains experience no rollingresistance, leaving only air resistance and electromagneticdrag, potentially improving power efficiency

Maintenance Requirements Of Electronic VersusMechanical Systems: Maglev trains currently in operationhave demonstrated the need for nearly insignificantguideway maintenance. Their electronic vehiclemaintenance is minimal and more closely aligned withaircraft maintenance schedules based on hours of

operation Noise: Because the major source of noise of a maglev train

comes from displaced air, maglev trains produce less noisethan a conventional train at equivalent speeds
