Maria is also a fun, dynamic speaker. About her presentation, “One Block, 12 Quilts,” she says, “I challenged myself over the past year to take just one block and each month use that block to create a different quilt. Same block, completely unique quilts, from just changing color schemes, block settings, size or borders. I have quilted them differently with different batting to show even more variation. The program encourages quilters to look differently at patterns and blocks they did not immediately fall in love with to see the potential in ANY pattern. The program will ignite your sewing fire and stir your creative juices ...” No workshops this month. October 6, 2016 Guild Meeting Speaker – Charlotte Angotti Lecture: “Why Aren’t You Making More Quilts? I know You Have the Fabric” Charlotte says she works from a bag of quilts. She never knows exactly what will come out of her mouth. (It depends on what comes out of the bag.) Charlotte’s lecture will be humorous, light and yet full of information and real quilts. There are no slides or power point, lights are up and ideas are flowing. Many people cannot attend classes, and lectures are a great way for them to get a view of what quilting is all about. Questions are always welcome during the lecture. Bring friends, cameras and be ready to laugh! Friday, October 7, 2016 Workshop: “Let Me Surprise You” Finally, a class that you know you have brought the right things for! In this fun-filled class, a kit of CUT fabrics is furnished. This is a wonderful workshop for those who just want to sew and not have any cutting or thinking to do. This class is the most popular class Charlotte offers. It fills quickly and is a SURPRISE in more ways than one. It is a mystery type class. No one gets any hints and yet those who take the class will want to take another. Each class is a different quilt. Each kit is the same for our group. Come for a relaxed day of laughter and sewing. The Guild has chosen a medium sized quilt. The kit fee, including precut fabrics, is $100, to be paid to the instructor at the time of the class. (please see Programs continued on page 7 for Saturday Workshop details)

From the President

Cindy Matthews Guild President

Happy September!    I am deeply honored to be your President, and I know I have big shoes to fill! Let me start by thanking Bonnie Ambrose and her team for their leadership over the last few years and moving our Guild forward in many areas. Job well done!    I know a good thing when I see it, so we will be striving to continue these same positive movements that we’ve seen. I’m excited that we have so many great speakers coming up in the next months. Our members show such enthusiasm in supporting our many volunteer efforts – like Covers for Kids and the learning opportunities that are offered during the Lesson of the Month at the Guild Meetings.    We will continue looking for ways to improve the Guild and to ensure a great experience at each monthly meeting. And I hope you will all continue to give constructive feedback and suggestions. Because hey, we’re all in this together.

Cindy

**Date Change: September Board meeting is scheduled for September 29

Lesson of the Month

Linda Bartley 7th VP-Education

6:30 p.m. at the Lesson of the Month Table:

Summertime, Summertime Sum - Sum - Summertime Summertime, O-O-Oh!

I am still in a Summer-time frame of mind. At the September meeting we will look forward to cooler weather and fall projects but NOT YET! We will have an exciting and fun Lesson of the Month so you will need to drop by the Lesson table after 6:30 p.m. on September 1 to find out what is in on the agenda. Believe me, it will be worth your time. We will have a little fun and a little lesson before we tell summer goodbye. Linda Bartley VP of summer……..

Membership Matters!

Judy Kriehn Membership List Wrangler

As of the close of the August Guild meeting, our renewals were up to 230 members!  YAY!    The September meeting will be your last opportunity to renew your membership and ensure that you’ll be listed in the Guild directory. You can still rejoin after that date, but Martha Smith will have to schlep your membership packet to the post office, and will likely be sending you a mental “stink eye” for making her do so.    Can’t say I’d blame her. I’m resistant to stopping to check my post office box to see if any more renewals have arrived. And I DRIVE RIGHT BY EVERY DAY. Sheesh. I miss the good old days when I’d check my box multiple times a day, hoping for MAIL!  But I digress.    You can renew online with Paypal, you can print a form off the website or out of this newsletter (see page 15) and mail it to me at the aforementioned post office box, OR bring your completed form and payment with you to the September meeting. I’ll be out front at the reception desk. Barring a horrible problem, credit cards will be accepted.  FYI – if you are renewing but none of your contact information has changed, you can simply write in your name and then write “same” across the other contact info. Saves both of us time.    Also, if you put off rejoining in order to keep your information out of the directory, here’s a tip: There is a box you can check if you want your contact information withheld. All that will appear in the directory is your name and your membership number. That way you always have a reference when you need your number (like for your show entry forms).    Double YAY!    And keep those renewals rolling in!

Oops – husband found the “Guest Room Stash” !!!

Quilt Show 2017 Martha Wolf 6th VP-Show

Progress is already underway for the 2017 show!

The judges are secured and we are in the final stages of the entries packet that goes out with the membership directory.

It is not too late to be a part of the planning team! There are still committee positions open, so if you would like to be involved, let us know!

• Block Contest – Develop the 2017 theme, manage fabric packet handout, collect blocks for display

• Guild Store – help select products for 2017 show, setup store and sell products at the show

• Show Photography – photograph category winners and other general show pictures

• Scooter Rentals – coordinate with scooter company to get rentals on site • Signs and Transportation Logistics – Work with moving company to meet at

storage unit and at Market Hall to unload guild equipment, hand out signs during setup, work with moving company to pick up our stuff after the show and drop it at the storage unit.

• Show Website Manager – help update the show website as information becomes available

• I’m happy to visit with you about these positions and what is involved with each job, or I can put you in touch with previous committee members who can answer your questions.   August is usually when we start having show committee meetings, but due to a conflict, we will not have an August meeting. Our first committee meeting will be the third Tuesday of September, the 20th, at the Temple. Please let me know if you are interested in one of the open committee positions by emailing me at [email protected] – I’d love to get the rest of the committee positions filled before the September meeting.

Happy sewing to all of you already working on your show entries!

Only six months until show entry

deadline! Donna Petrick Valerie Salter

Richard Larson Entries Co-Chairmen

Judy Kriehn is actually ghost-writing this article for us, as the three of us are in the end-run to get ready for the Plano Quilt Show. (We hope you came and had a good time!) We are also putting the final touches on our entry documents for the show, but figured we’d share our list of “things that make us scratch our heads and wonder …” Check out page 5 to see our list.  The entry materials will be posted to the Guild website, www.quiltersguildofdallas.org shortly.    Please note that we’ve deleted a category, combined two categories, and added new categories. So using old forms would be a bad idea. (Yep. Making us scratch our heads and wonder…)

Page 5: Guild Meeting speaker – Maria Hall Lecture...lecture. Bring friends, cameras and be ready to laugh!!! Friday, October 7, 2016 Workshop: “Let Me Surprise You”! Finally, a class

How to keep your ears from burningWhen we are doing the data entry to log entries into our entries database, we are amazed at some of the errors made by entrants.

Using an old entry form from a previous show:From time to time, category numbers change and category titles shift. We even drop some categories and add new ones. When you use an old form, it slows us down, because we have to determine where your entry should be.

As of 2016, entering a quilt in the show requires more than one piece of paper. We spun off some of the information to allow us to better track how many entries a given entrant has in the show and to simplify the information requested on the actual entry form.

Not reading the rules and category descriptions FIRST:First of all, rules get written for good reason. We’ve been doing our show over 35 years, and have just about seen it all...

Second of all, please keep in mind that we are all volunteers. The time spent fixing errors due to inattention is time we could have spent SEWING.

Not taking our definition of Master and Artisan seriously. We do not care that “your teaching days were long ago” or that “I was publishing patterns in the 1980’s. I should get to go back to Artisan.”

Newsflash: It. Doesn’t. Matter.

If you have EVER done something that our matrix places in the Master division, you are a Master for Life. The bottom line is that you considered your skills and/or your design talent worthy of payment. And work worthy of payment is masterful. Most of us have our own sob stories regarding our passage from Artisan to Master. Deal with it.

Oh - and FYI: We have had the Best of Show winner come from the Artisan Division in the past. The competition is just as stiff there...

Putting a Two-Person or Group Quilt into a one-person category:(see not reading rules above) The categories in the Masters Division and Artisan Division are predominantly one-person. “One Person” means that only one person did EVERYTHING. They cut the fabric, they sewed the top together, they quilted it and they put the binding on. If you pay someone to do any of those functions (pre-cut kits, long-arm quilting, binding...) it is no longer a one-person undertaking.

If you bought a pile of old quilt blocks at a garage sale and made a quilt out of them, somebody else made those blocks. Ergo, no longer a one-person enterprise.

Not filling in the dimensions of the quilt:Yes, we know. You may not know how big or small it will end up after you finish quilting. However, we have to know how wide the quilt is for display planning, and we have to know overall dimensions to ensure it is in the correct category. Please give us your best guess - preferably on the larger side than the smaller side. By the way - please round up to the nearest inch. (i.e. no fractions)

Not filling in the name of the quilter:So, maybe you haven’t booked a quilter at the time you are completing the form. However, we need the information for the quilt signage (which must be printed in advance) and we need to ensure that you didn’t enter a two-person entry in a one-person category (see above).

Writing a four-page essay for your comments:Thirty words is not very many, but our signs are not very big. When we try to fit long descriptions onto a small sign, the words get very small. And people complain.

Saying nothing about your quilt:The flip side of the “too many words” equation is “too few.” People like to know about their favorite quilts. Was it a pattern they could buy? Was it made for a special reason? Did it take you a long time? Why did you enter it in the show? Just one little glimpse into your quiltmaking heart makes your quilt all the more memorable.

Not taking the photo requirement seriously:We use the photos submitted to plan the order that the quilts will be hung in the display area. We say bad words when the photos we get are:

• Too dark (taken inside in a dark room without flash)

• Too light (taken against a window, so light is showing through the quilt, taken with a flash so bright that the colors are blown out, taken outside on a VERY sunny day with the sun in the background)

• Out of focus/blurry• Printed on a printer that has run out

of one or more ink colors (so the quilt looks like it is a different color than it actually is)

• Not photos at all - copies of pattern covers or drawings of planned design.

We do NOT expect anyone to submit professional-quality photos, but we do want to know what your quilt really looks like.

And if your top isn’t complete enough to take a photo of in early JANUARY, odds are you’re not going to get it done before MARCH. Save that entry for another year.

Shipping your quilt packed in a million styrofoam peanuts:Is your quilt breakable? What do you say in your head when you open a box that is crammed full of a gazillion of those things, and the static electricity scatters them everywhere in the room?

Yeah, we thought so... We don’t say nice things either.

Miniature Quilt Auction

Donna King Mini Quilt Auction Committee

Gardening and outdoor activities have to wait for cooler temperatures!!! This is the perfect time to stay inside and quilt. This is also a great time to start that mini (or two or more) for the Mini Quilt Auction of 2017. (You can stay cool because you won’t have lots of fabric on your lap as you sew on the binding.)   We are planning to have mini workshops in October and January. The dates will be announced at the next Guild meeting and in the October newsletter. This is a great opportunity to receive some mini ideas, patterns and advice. The committee is reviewing the applications for the beneficiary for the 2017 Mini Quilt Auction and will soon have a recommendation for the Board. We should have the announcement of the beneficiary at the October general meeting. Again, thank you for your continued support of the Miniature Quilt Auction and your willingness to provide wonderful mini quilts. They are always spectacular!! Stay Cool, The Mini Quilt Auction Committee

2nd VP-Ways and Means

Congratulations to Ann West, who welcomed a granddaughter on July 29! Christiana weighed 9 lb. 2 oz.    Found at August General Meeting:  lightweight, white Eddie Bauer jacket – contact Lut to retrieve.

President Bonnie Ambrose received her President’s Quilt at the August Meeting. Presenting the quilt was the designer of the quilt and 1st VP Mary Howard (She is very shy -- the top of her head is just visible).   The quilt was pieced by Glynnis Wood, the back coordinated by Mary and it was quilted by Richard Larson.      Ed. Note: Thanks and congratulations from the Guild to Bonnie and all outgoing Board members - it was a great year!

Programs (continued from page 1)

Saturday, October 8, 2016 Workshop: “Surprise Yourself” (with your own design)  This workshop will use the techniques for simple design, cutting and sewing techniques from Charlotte’s new book Let Me Surprise You, which was written with her good friend, Debbie Caffrey. Using easy units and an artistic eye you will be creating your own designs as well as not needing the crazy directions often found in patterns and books. With this freedom you can easily see how many quilts are broken down and put back together again!    Certain patterns are easier than others and using basic units you will begin to create instead of just copy. This class is full of information, real quilts and real solutions to everyday problems in quilt making. The book is not required for the class, but it is a great source. (See the website for link to supply list.)    November 3, 2016  Cover’s For Kids Evening at the Guild.  Join us for the November Guild meeting to work on Covers for Kids! We will be doing "string piecing" and learning a few different ways to sew them, lay the blocks out and finish the tops. We will need a lot of help at this meeting. You can bring your sewing machine and tool kit, an iron and tabletop ironing board, a small 18"x24" cutting mat with rotary cutter and either a long ruler or a square one. Even if you do not bring any tools with you, we will still have something for you to do to help! Please plan to come and since it's not a meeting where there is a speaker fee, bring a friend! What a great way to introduce them to our Guild and show them just how much we love to help the children in our area. We will begin our workshop after a short business meeting. Questions or to RSVP that you are bringing a sewing machine, please contact Rhonda Anderson at [email protected] so that we know how many spots to have ready for sewing!    December 1, 2016  Guild Meeting Speaker – Cynthia England  Lecture: “Creating a Pictorial Quilt”  Cynthia is an international fiber artist, pattern designer and author. She is known for the technique she developed called "Picture Piecing." One of her quilts, "Piece and Quiet," was distinguished as one of "The Twentieth Century's Best Quilts." She has received many awards for her work; including two Best of Show awards at the prestigious International Quilt Festival.    Cynthia will be teaching two workshops for the Dallas Guild. Learn more at the Programs and Workshops table at the Guild meeting.  Workshops: TBD    January 5, 2017  Guild Meeting Speaker – Michelle Watts Lecture: TBD www.jmichellewatts.com  February 2, 2017  Guild Meeting Speaker – Sue Nickels Lecture: TBD www.sue-nickles.com

Community Service - CFK

Mary Howard Outgoing

1st VP-Community Service

Covers for Kids In August, we gave 17 quilts each to Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center and Vogel Alcove plus 7 quilts to the Ronald McDonald House. This brings our total to 570 quilts for the guild year!!! YEAH! In comparison, the previous year we gave 456 quilts. On behalf of the children and youth we serve, a big hug and thank you to everyone who helped make these quilts! If you made a top, quilted, bound or sewed a back, you have helped a child in need! A special thank you goes to Rhonda Anderson for all she does in organizing, meeting with friendship groups, holding workshops, etc. to boost our giving. If you have an idea on how we can make more quilts to give, let Rhonda or our new VP for Community Service, Bonnie Ambrose, know. Our workshop winner for August is Ruth Whelan. Ruth is receiving a voucher for a free guild workshop of her choice. Ruth helps CFK by binding and giving quilts she has made. Thank you Ruth for all you do for CFK! CFK WORKSHOPS CFK Workshops have a new home: the Hobby Lobby on Highway 78/Lavon Dr. in Garland. It is two doors down from the old Hancock Fabrics we were using. To find the classroom, turn right immediately after entering the second set of doors to the store. Please, if you shop at this Hobby Lobby, make a point to express your appreciation for the use of their classroom for CFK workshops. If you are interested in trying out a Covers of Kids workshop, let Rhonda Anderson ([email protected]) know so you can be put on her email list.

We add borders, turning too small quilt tops into just the right size. We also make backs. Not hard work at all, but very much needed. You bring your sewing machine and basic sewing/quilting supplies (scissors, seam ripper, rotary cutter, etc.) We supply the quilt tops, fabric, thread, cutting mats, irons and ironing boards (and sometimes someone to do all the pressing). We promise lots of fun, laughs and you may even learn a new quilt trick. You will leave knowing you have helped a child or teen have a brighter tomorrow.

2016 CFK Workshop Schedule:

Another busy month for the Guild Library! We had a great clearance sale of books, magazines, patterns, etc. items at the August meeting, and want to give a big thanks to Ann West for making sure all of the items found new homes. Thank you, Ann! We’ll have more new books at September meeting, so be sure to come by. Some of the titles include

• Quilts and Human Rights by McDowell • Quilt Batik by Cheryl Brown • Create Your Own Free-Form Quilts by Rayna Gillman • Simple Christmas Tidings by Kim Diehl • The Ultimate Guide to Art Quilting by Linda Seward • Quilt Local by Heather Jones. • Jelly Babies by That Patchwork Place • Making Quilts with Kathy Doughty

Reminder: If you can’t return your book at the next meeting, you can email me or Mary Jane Burton and we’ll renew it for you. [email protected] or [email protected].  On another note, I’m giving up my position with the Library in October and would love to have one of you volunteer to take over for me. Mary Jane Burton will continue to work with the Library and will be a great help in the transition. If interested, please contact me at 214 784-6661 or come by the Library table at the next meeting so I can answer any questions.  It’s hot! So stay inside and stay cool with a book!

Notes from a Curator

Marian Ann Montgomery, PhD

Curator of Clothing and Textiles,

Museum of Texas Tech University

Quilt history books are great fun to look at and also to read since they often put into perspective the art form we all love. They provide images of quilts that can serve as an inspiration for your next project. Having published Legacy of a Thousand Stitches; Quilts of the Museum of Texas Tech University, this year has made me even more eager to share with you other treasures. The catalog accompanied our exhibit and includes 101 images of the museum’s quilts in full color plus stories of many of the quilt makers. There are only a few copies of this publication left. Copies are available through the museum store (806) 742-2436 between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Tuesday - Friday and 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Saturday or at the Lone Star Quilt Study Group meeting in Tyler on August 20th.

For several years I’ve anticipated the arrival of Comfort and Glory: Two Centuries of American Quilts from the Briscoe Center by their curator, Kate Adams. The University of Texas Press has just released the book. It is a beautiful hardbound book, also available on Amazon. If you are attending the Lone Star Quilt Study Group meeting in Tyler on August 20th I think Kate will be there to autograph your book, though I don’t think she will have any with her for sale.

A Stitch in Time: The Needlework of Aging Women in Antebellum America by Aimee E. Newell came out in 2014, but I recently discovered it. I am having a great time reading about women in Antebellum America who made quilts and samplers after the age of 40. One point of particular interest that Newell found was that often as women aged they picked out the stitches in their samplers that defined their age. Hmmm I no longer put the year on the labels on my quilts, for exactly the same reason. Don’t let “needlework” in the title put you off—this book is full of beautiful pictures of quilts, including one started by Martha Washington and one made by the wife of Francis Scott Key, who wrote the national anthem. I confess that I don’t always read the whole way through my quilt books because the pictures are enough to make me feel the purchase was worth it, but I’m over half way through this

book! It is very interesting and readable.    And last, but not least, for those armchair travelers, is Jane Lury’s Meanderings of a Quilt Collector. Jane and her partner David have collected quilts and been quilt dealers since we first met many years ago. They attend the American Quilt Study Group Seminars every year with their goods as well as the Houston International Quilt Festival—so many of you may know them.

Notes  (Continued from page 12)

The book is published through the French firm Quilt Mania which also published the beautiful Kay and Lori Triplett Poos Collection books and produces that terrific magazine.    Meanderings is about Jane Lury’s “meanderings in all the continents to bring back exceptional quilts.” It is full of beautiful photographs and “traces a story with historical comments about her textile researches.” I noticed on the Quilt Mania website that the book pictures a quilt very similar to one of the red, white and blue quilts, “The Star of the East,” that I discussed in last month’s newsletter. I cannot wait to see Jane at AQSG in Tempe to discuss them.     Happy reading!

Donna Petrick (TAQG Rep) thanked all members for their support for Rally Day. She also still has some thank you notes for those who donated mini quilts. If you donated a mini quilt for Rally Day and haven’t received a thank you note, please see Donna. Mary Howard (1st VP-Community Service) acknowledged those who turned in items tonight by asking them to stand. Then she asked those who turned in anything throughout the 2015-2016 guild year to please stand. The guild gave away over 500 quilts to our benefitting organizations and Ebby House. In July, 11 quilts were given to Vogel Alcove, 11 to Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center and 13 to the Ronald McDonald House. These quilts really do make a difference! We have a location for our Covers for Kids workshops! We will be meeting at the Hobby Lobby by Firewheel that is two doors down from the Hancock’s Fabrics where we used to meet. The next workshop will be Saturday, August 27. The Covers for Kids Challenge quilts will be voted on at the September meeting. If at all possible, please get them to Rhonda before the September meeting. The workshop voucher was presented to Ruth Whela, outstanding CFK volunteer for August. Mary then presented Bonnie Ambrose with her President’s quilt. The quilt was designed by Mary, pieced by Glynnis Wood and quilted by Richard Larson. Bring and Brag: 12 people shared 22 lovely quilts. Break Program: Debbie Maddy recently returned from a trip to Japan. She shared with us a new lecture about what she learned about indigo dyeing and shibori.  There was one new member, three visitors and guests, and a total attendance of 127.
