GULF BREEZE VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT

• Gulf Breeze Volunteer Fire Department is looking to improve our response capabilities with the addition of a new generator and a chainsaw. These items, as simple as they may sound, will improve safety. Today’s fire service is an all-hazard response force. No longer is the “fire department” strictly focused toward fire extinguishment. The generator is small and portable, and it has a built in floodlight. The generator will be housed in our rescue truck. Currently, our rescue truck does not have a generator nor a portable floodlight. This two-in-one package will not only increase our response capabilities, it will improve safety. After a hurricane, it is actually the fire departments’ responsibility to ensure that all roads are accessible. In simple, this means cutting trees. As an example, after Hurricane Ivan, The fire department spent a week clearing roads. Without a doubt, without professional chainsaws, this would not happen.

TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN LAPTOP PROGRAM

• Take Stock in Children (TSIC) is a not-for-profit program providing scholarships, guidance and hope to deserving, low-income youth across Florida. Upon graduation from high school, each student who has honored the TSIC commitment receives a full tuition scholarship to a Florida public university. For 2015, TSIC will graduate 18 students in Santa Rosa County. Our project, The Take Stock in Children Laptop Program provides these students with a laptop upon graduation. The computer with software cost $750. There are 2 TSIC Scholarship recipients from Gulf Breeze High School in the 32561 and 32563 zip codes.

THE EAGLE SCOUT REEF

• My Eagle Scout project is to create an inshore artificial reef to provide new habitat for marine life, enhance recreational fishing, educate the community on the importance of artificial reefs, and provide a near shore snorkeling area for the community to see and experience an underwater marine ecosystem.

GULF BREEZE HIGH SCHOOL BEST BUDDIES

• This project is to continue the mission of the newly formed Best Buddies chapter at Gulf Breeze High School. It has several necessary components, including an end-of-year celebration for current and interested Best Buddies students/parents, sending next year’s leaders to the annual Best Buddies International Leadership Conference over the summer, t-shirts and car decals for members and supporters, and a chapter sign that can accompany buddy pairs to events such as baseball games and parades. By showing how proud they are of their participation in Best Buddies, students can help open more doors for students with special needs.

THE WEEKEND FOOD PROGRAM

• The Weekend Food Program was started in the spring of 2011 at the Gulf Breeze Presbyterian Church to address the problem of hunger and poor nutrition over the weekend for children from families who receive free lunches in South Santa Rosa County. The program has grown through the years in student participation as well as community involvement with volunteers from a consortium of Gulf Breeze civic organizations, churches, and individuals actively supporting the program. This year’s 400 program participants receive 7 or 8 items of food to take home each Friday at a cost of approximately $1.80 per student. Each participant receives food items like: 2 ramen noodle blocks, 2 oatmeal packets, breakfast bar, pudding cup, applesauce cup and an apple. Currently 144 participants are from schools in the 32561 and 32563 zip codes.

TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

• Take Stock in Children provides college scholarships for low-income students in our community. Students are selected between sixth and ninth grade and sign a contract, along with their parent/guardian, agreeing to remain drug/crime free, attend class regularly, maintain a “C” or better in their classes, and meet with a mentor once a week at school.
