PRESIDENT’S CORNER I sincerely hope that everyone had a great holiday and is looking forward to a rewarding new year. Our first pro- gram of the year is with Ms. Paula Haymond and the subject is working with colors. This meeting was originally scheduled to be held at the University of Houston. How- ever a last minute conflict necessitated a change so we are having this program at the Turning Center for one last time. Be sure and bring a chair. Our future programs include: February 2013........Derek Powers - Wood Identification March 2013............Jewelry - Demonstrator TBD Our Presidential Challenge for January is a Collaborative 'Turn & Burn', that is a piece that includes the efforts of two or more people and includes some wood burning. In the coming months we will have additional Presidential Challenges including: February 2013 – a box exchanges, this has been one of our most popular exchanges. March 2013 - A Platter Show April 2013 - a Turned Jewelry Show June 2013 - The dumbest or most worthless thing ever turned on a lathe. Linda Bohl will be shaking up the raffle with a new pricing scheme: the more tickets you buy the more tickets you get free (page 4). The raffle is an important factor in the club’s revenue. However, like all of our activities we work hard to make it entertaining as well as profitable. We fre- quently have vendors that donate items or gift certificated. Remember that you can donate also. Any member would be glad to win a turning completed by another member. Don Fluker is heading up the efforts for the 2013 Spring Retreat currently scheduled for May 17, 18 and 19, 2013 at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. Don will be rounding up volunteers. So when he asks the correct an- swer is “yes”. The spring retreat is indeed a lot of work, but everyone leaves with big smiles. We still need to come up with a slate for the GCWA offi- cers and board members. At present we will need candi- dates for the President , Vice-President , and Secretary . Tom Irven is heading up the nomination committee, ably assisted by Walter Mooney and Steve LeGrue. These are important positions in GCWA and do involve a little work. However there are more than a few people who are always willing to help if you just ask. The Board has decided to update the membership roster that can be accessed from the GCWA Forum (under Membership Map). We will drop “Map” from the label and we will add the members’ email address. Remember this information is accessed in the Forum and therefore only by members. If your e-mail address does not appear in this list it is because you instructed us not to publish this information in your membership application. In the past we have mailed copies of the newsletter to a few of the members. The board has made a decision not to do this in the future due to the cost and effort involved. PRESIDENT’S CORNER

I sincerely hope that everyone had a great holiday and is looking forward to a rewarding new year. Our first pro-gram of the year is with Ms. Paula Haymond and the subject is working with colors. This meeting was originally scheduled to be held at the University of Houston. How-ever a last minute conflict necessitated a change so we are having this program at the Turning Center for one last time. Be sure and bring a chair. Our future programs include:

February 2013........Derek Powers - Wood Identification

March 2013............Jewelry - Demonstrator TBD Our Presidential Challenge for January is a Collaborative 'Turn & Burn', that is a piece that includes the efforts of two or more people and includes some wood burning. In the coming months we will have additional Presidential Challenges including:

February 2013 – a box exchanges, this has been one of our most popular exchanges.

March 2013 - A Platter Show

April 2013 - a Turned Jewelry Show

June 2013 - The dumbest or most worthless thing ever turned on a lathe.

Linda Bohl will be shaking up the raffle with a new pricing scheme: the more tickets you buy the more tickets you get free (page 4). The raffle is an important factor in the club’s revenue. However, like all of our activities we work hard to make it entertaining as well as profitable. We fre-quently have vendors that donate items or gift certificated. Remember that you can donate also. Any member would be glad to win a turning completed by another member. Board Feet

By Lane Bradford

Well we have started a New Year for GCWA and have begun planning our activities for 2013. Rene Gonzales presented the Board with his recommended budget for 2013 and after some minor tweaks the Board was satis-fied. Just so you understand, the GCWA operates on roughly $30k a year and so far we have had a very small surplus each of at least the last 10 years. Where I am going with this is, it’s time to pay your 2013 dues! They haven’t changed in over 5 years but without them you would not be able to attend demonstrations by nationally known turners like Jimmy Clews or David Ellsworth or to enjoy our very own Spring Retreat every year. Due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control we will be changing the location of this month’s meeting. We are going back to the Westchase Turning Center one more time. The balance of the year will have us meeting in a new City of Houston Community Center that Don Fluker found for us and secured GCWA a monthly meeting place for all of 2013. We’ll miss the Turning Center but the Sosa Community Center promises to be a suitable substi-tute for us. The only issue that we have not fully resolved yet is a place to have our hands-on classes on Sundays

and weekdays. If you know of a facility we can use for these classes please let someone on the Board know. As previously reported, the GCWA has purchased a trailer to haul our meeting paraphernalia each month. However, we ran into considerable difficulty in finding a suitable storage facility to keep the trailer in between meetings. Ed Peine has a friend that will allow us to keep the trailer at his business, behind a locked fence, for now. This is only a temporary solution, however. If you know of some place we can store our trailer that will keep it out of the weather and provide security for its contents, again let someone on the Board know. Elsewhere in this newsletter (page 4), you will notice that there are some changes on how the raffle is done at our monthly meetings. Let us know what you think of these changes either verbally or by buying more raffle tickets. Be sure and thank Delia for her years of hard work as our Raffle Queen. Are you looking for something to do? Tired of watching TV? Come and visit a Board Meeting. Their dates, times and locations are always listed on the clubs website. Don’t worry; there are usually 2 or 3 visitors at these meetings so you will not be alone. All meetings are open to visitors all the time and your opinions are always wel-come.

Welcome New Members By Ed Peine

This month we welcomed 1 new member to GCWA. William Stein and his wife, Claudia Grossman, live here in Houston. He has been turning for the last year and turns on his Jet 1642 lathe. William is retired and his hob-bies are traveling and coin collecting.

Club Orders By Douglas Grissom

The club order from Craft Supply was very successful. The order, at full retail, was over $3400. Everyone shared in some kind of discount and saved some money that can be used to buy more tools or wood to use with the tools just purchased. We will look into the possibility to doing another order, probably in June.

While we are thinking of wood, check out the website of North Woods Figured Woods, www.nwfiguredwoods.com. I have been asked by Les and Susan, the owners, to see about putting together a club order. We would need a retail order of about $1330.00 full retail to get a 25% dis-count. A full pallet of wood would cost about $200.00 and would be shared by all who ordered. I will try to have a couple of samples of their wood at the next meeting. If you have any questions, contact me at [email protected].

Tool Swap This Month By Bill Berry

If you have any turning tools or turning sundries that you want to SELL or TRADE, please bring them to this month’s meeting. Start digging out all those seldom or never used items that are collecting dust. It could be just the tool someone else "needs". There will be an area set up to display all of your items. Please have all tools marked with your NAME and a PRICE.

Time To Pay 2013 Club Dues

By Ed Peine This is the gentle reminder -- GCWA membership dues for 2013 are now due. For only $25 you can stay on the active rolls. For your convenience, your membership committee will have a table set up at this month’s meeting to collect dues. If you miss this meeting you can mail you check – payable to “GCWA” to 8915 Springview Lane, Houston, TX 77080-1752. If you have questions, call the member-ship chairman Walter Mooney 713-248-6431. Please let us know if your address, phone number or email has changed in the last year.

Jimmy Clews at the end of September 2013. And the 2013 President of SWAT is our own George Kabacinski. SWAT is currently scheduled for the end of August 2013 in Waco, TX. Be sure and ask George how you can help. I am sure he can find something that you can contribute even if you are not able to make it to Waco. Look forward to see all of you at the January meeting and until then happy turning.

Open Shop in Montgomery By Lane Bradford

The weather dampened the spirits of some but those brave enough to venture out in the rain and potential flash floods enjoyed themselves immensely. The Second Tuesday Open Shop in Montgomery now has some extra lathes so more people can practice, seek guidance, or do whatever they want to do while enjoying the friendly com-pany of their fellow turners. If you have not tried one of our Open Shop nights that we have every month, then you are missing out on a truly unique experience. Check the Calendar section of the GCWA website for locations and directions.

Raffle News By Bill Berry

One of the very necessary functions of the GCWA meet-ings is the raffle. The raffle allows some of us to take home an item, usually woodturning related, as a token of appreciation for a donation to GCWA. Those donations help offset the expenses of our meetings, mainly coffee, donuts, soft drinks, ice and etc. So when you come to the meeting and enjoy those refreshments remember your donation helped to pay for them. For the past several years Delia Spicer has been the per-son charged with soliciting donations, buying raffle items, and selling raffle tickets at our meetings. Delia has done a great job, and has passed this task along to Linda Bohl. Starting at the January meeting there will be some minor changes in the way we do our raffle. First of all, the per-son’s number that is drawn FIRST will have the opportu-nity to choose from any raffle item on the table. That’s right you get your choice. I suggest when you buy your raffle tickets, you take a look at the raffle items to see what you will choose. After that first number is called, numbers and item will be called at random as in the past. You must buy raffle tickets to have your number drawn

the more you buy the better your chances. The cost of a raffle ticket is $1.00, but the people who win, win be-cause they buy MANY raffle tickets. In the past, you have had an incentive to by tickets. If you bought $5 worth of tickets you got 6 tickets. Starting at our January meeting there will be an extra incentive to buy more tickets. If you purchase $8 worth of tickets you will receive 10 tickets. It gets ever better, if you purchase $10 worth of tickets, you will receive 15 tickets. If you act now, and buy your raffle tickets at the January meeting you will receive. 10 extra tickets FREE with the purchase of $20 worth of raffle tick-ets. We can extend this offer to you, only if you act quickly at the January meeting. Those 10 extra tickets will increase you odds of winning by 28.3%. You just can’t miss this opportunity. You will have to buy tickets to win the raffle items. Please bring plenty of CASH to the meeting. There are many members who know the odds at this raffle, and load up with tickets, and they win consis-tently. Don’t let them outdo you. Linda has received her raffle order from Craft Supplies and they are all items that every woodturning can use. There are over thirty items in this month’s raffle. Georgene Huckeba will be helping Linda at the meeting to handle the increased ticket sales. Did I mention? You have to buy tickets to WIN.

David Ellsworth Comes to GCWA

By Ed Peine

Here is an update on the Ellsworth visit and registration. Classes were originally scheduled only for March 17th, 18th and the 19th. Registration for these classes opened up at the December meeting. These 3 classes filled up within 30 minutes. We thought this was a possibility, so Ellsworth had agreed to come 2 days early and teach on March 14th and 15th. We started signing up students for these 2 additional classes. These 2 additional classes filled up within 15 minutes. So the good news/bad news is that all 5 of the Ellsworth classes are full.

If you want to be put on the waiting list for any of these classes please sign up at the front desk at the general membership meeting Saturday, January 19th. Here is the class agenda:

Thursday, March 14 - Class.- Natural edged bowls for intermediate and advanced. Discussion and critique of student’s previously finished work.

Friday, March 15 - Class - Hollow form vessels for inter-mediate and advanced. Discussion and critique of stu-dent’s previously finished work.

Sunday, March, 17 - Class - Bowls and hollow forms for beginners. The beginner must have some turning experi-ence

Monday, March, 18 - Class - Natural edged bowls for in-termediate and advanced. Discussion and critique of stu-dent’s previously finished work.

Tuesday, March 19 - Class - Hollow form vessels for in-termediate and advanced. Discussion and critique of stu-dent’s previously finished work. If you signed up for any of these classes and did not pay your $125 tuition (and you know who you are) please pay at the January 19th meeting or mail you check payable to “GCWA” to Ed Peine, 138 Hickory Ridge, Houston, TX 77024. We are working up a list of suggested tools and supplies that each student should bring to the class, and we will be publishing that list well before the classes. Ellsworth will demo all day Saturday, March, 16. He will produce natural edge bowls in the morning and hollow forms in the afternoon. This demo is open to all GCWA members and there is no charge to GCWA members. So if you missed getting into one of the classes this is your chance to see David Ellsworth produce his favorite wood turnings. This demo will be held at the Sosa Community Center, 1414 Wirt Road. This center is a brand new facil-ity and should be a great venue. Although there will be no charge for this demo, it would be very helpful to know how many of you will be attending. If you plan to come to the Saturday March 16th demo, please RSVP. There will be a signup sheet at the January 19th membership meeting.

Face Shields for Woodturning By Andy Chen

In the December 2012 issue of American Woodturner, Ed Brannon from Pennsylvania wrote an excellent article on woodturning safety (p 19). However, I was most disturbed by the accompanying photograph. Pascal Oudet is wear-ing a face shield during a demonstration at the 2010 AAW national symposium. I see two serious problems with that picture. First, Oudet was turning in the direct “line of fire” and cannot be more than 6 inches from the spinning disk. Most people would probably recognize that danger in the picture right away. However, can you see the second infraction of the safety rules? It is in the face shield he was wearing. When I did my demo in Tai-wan last November, I did not take any of my equipment with me, including a face shield. I requested one from the host club and was displeased to find what they had was just like the one that Oudet was wear-ing in that picture.

Evidently, many woodturners do not realize there are many different kinds of face shields designed for various purposes. We probably all know better than wearing a welder's face shield while turning wood, but do you know what kind of face shield Oudet was wearing? It is a splash shield that is designed for chemical (liquid) splashes. It has a thin plastic shield that is not strong enough to protect you from even medium-sized flying wood objects. It also has an aluminum rim for supporting the thin plastic. This makes it a greater hazard because if the plastic is shattered by the flying object, the aluminum can be forced into your face which is exactly what hap-pened to a couple of members of our club a number of years ago. (The old timers might remember George Keenan and Woody Woodard.) The aluminum ended up

in their cheeks causing severe lacerations and a trip to the emergency room.

The correct type of face shields woodturners should be wearing is the thick polycarbonate (PC) shield without the metal rim. Our very own Jim Keller just reported at the December meeting that a large chunk of bark inclu-sion came off one of his large mesquite turnings and shattered the face shield he was wearing but he did not sustain any injuries. He was wearing one of these thick polycarbon-ate face shields. Granted, the face shield was a loss but it did its job of protecting Jim. These thick PC face shields are widely available (Sears for instance) for under $15.00. When purchasing a face shield make sure they are rated Z87+ as opposed to just Z87. Sometime you will find Z87.1-2003 instead of Z87+. These are ANSI (American National Standards Institute) ratings. Without going into details, suffice it to say Z87+ has higher impact resis-tance. Instead of a simple face shield some turners prefer a Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR), such as the 3M Airstream or Trend Airshield. In addition to protection from flying debris these PAPRs provide the protection to your lungs by filtering out harmful wood dust. This is my personal favorite because the filtered airstream also pre-vent condensation on your glasses/face shield, especially in our part of the world with the constant high humidity.

One should not be complacent even if you wear a face shield while turning. A catastrophic explosion of a large turning could still overwhelm your face shield. You should still stay out of the line of fire as much as possible. In ad-dition, when you restart a turning that has been previously chucked on the lathe, recheck to make sure the chucking is still tight and start at a lower speed if you have a vari-able speed lathe.

Chain Saw Will Not Start By Bill Berry

I have been having issues getting my chainsaw to start. After my heart rate got to 140 today, I had to put my chainsaw aside without starting. I know what the problem is: gasoline with ethanol in it. I never had this issue be-fore ethanol started being added to gasoline. Fresh gas right from the pump, with ethanol, no problem, but if it sits for a week or more, dump the fuel and start over with fresh fuel. I Googled gas stations that sold ethanol-free gasoline. There are none within an hour or two from MY house. I did find this article from Consumer Reports. I have posted a part of it here.

"Last fall, we mentioned a specially formulated ethanol-free fuel, Stihl's Motomix, that's sold by the quart at cer-tain Stihl dealerships. Though $8 a quart - that's more than $30 a gallon - the two-cycle gas/oil mix still seems a bargain compared to taking a string trimmer or leaf blower into the shop a few times a year. As it turns out, Motomix is just one of many such options, and the others cost less.

Consumer Reports hasn't tested any of these, but here's a rundown of what's available:

• TruFuel, in three varieties, is sold at Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart and other retailers. The ethanol-free four-cycle gas costs $5.48 per quart at Lowe's. (Of other retailers that sell it, Home Depot and Walmart don't ap-pear to sell it online.) The two-cycle 50:1 gas/oil mix costs $5.48 a quart at Home Depot and Lowe's, which also sells the 40:1 mixture online.

• At Sears, ethanol-free fuels in four-and two-cycle varie-ties are sold online and in stores. (Kmart also carries these products, all of which are made by TruSouth, maker of TruFuel.) The "pure" Craftsman gas costs $6.99 a quart, though you can lower that price to $5.81 a quart by buying a six-pack (the brand is Arnold, a division of out-door-gear manufacturer MTD), sold by Wholesale Tools from the same website. Both the 50:1 two-cycle gas/oil mixture and the 40:1 two-cycle mixture cost $5.49 a quart."

I hate paying $8.00 a quart, but it may be cheaper than a heart attack.
