Social Responsibility & ISO 26000
Emirates Authority For Standardization & Metrology (ESMA) is the national standardization body in the UAE. The independent board of directors is chaired by H. E. Dr. Rashid Ahmad Bin Fahad, the Minister of Environment and Water and comprises of representatives from the main stakeholders involved in standards. Based in Abu Dhabi, ESMA is responsible for developing and issuing national standards which in 2011 amounted to more than 6500 standards. ESMA is a member of GCC Standardization Organization (GSO) and other regional standardization organizations and at the international level, ESMA is a participating member of the International Standardization Organization (ISO) and a member of IEC and Codex Alimentarius. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is the world's largest developer and publisher of International Standards. It is a network of the national standards institutes of 162 countries, one member per country, with a Central Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, that coordinates the system. It is also a non-governmental organization that forms a bridge between the public and private sectors. On the one hand, many of its member institutes are part of the governmental structure of their countries, or are mandated by their government. On the other hand, other members have their roots uniquely in the private sector, having been set up by national partnerships of industry associations.
