We begin the 2010 exhibition season with our first majorexhibition entitled “The Gullane Masters 2010”. The title is asimple play on words, recognizing our location as aninternationally recognized haven of golf (we have no less than14 top quality golf courses within a 10 mile semi-circle of thegallery), the time of year when golf’s Augusta Masters is heldand televised all over the world, and of course the word“Masters” as it relates to the very best in a visual art context.

In this exhibition we bring together the work of 12 prominentand established artists – mostly Scottish, but on this occasionnot exclusively so. As is our policy, we bring back a number ofalready well-known names and add four new artists to theline up. All have been carefully selected to produce a goodand balanced blend – a high quality mixed exhibition withgreat variety in style, strength in technique and offeringsomething for everyone in terms of subject matter.

We believe it is important for us to keep progressing as agallery, seeking out new artists (new to the gallery, that is)

who add value by way of stature, reputation and quality ofwork. In this respect we are delighted to welcome for thefirst time Claire Harrigan, Joe McIntyre, and Sandy Murphy. We are also delighted to feature work by Aine Divine, who as you will read, has an accomplished track record inportrait painting, but who has branched out into othersubjects for this show.

This brochure illustrates the work of each artist, givesbiographical details and samples of paintings they will beexhibiting. The full exhibition can be viewed on our websitewhen it goes live at noon on Thursday 25th March.

We hope you enjoy the exhibition as much as we will enjoyhanging it.

Catriona Campbell was born in Dollar in 1940.She grew up in a family where art was part andparcel of everyday life given that her father IanCampbell was an artist and art teacher. Heencouraged his daughter and at an early age shedeveloped a keen awareness and skill inobservation.

She studied art at Glasgow School of Art from1957 – 61, was a student of David Donaldson andlearned the importance of space and spaces fromher studies of the work of Degas, Uccello, andVelasquez. In terms of her painting style, Picasso,Spencer and Joan Eardley were great influences.

She won the Somerville Shanks Prize forPortraiture while in her final year and graduatedin 1961.

Catriona taught art in various primary andsecondary schools and then in special educationbefore taking a break to start a family. She leftteaching in 1981 to become a full time artist.

She was elected a professional member of theScottish Society of Women Artists in 1986 andsubsequently a professional member of PaisleyArt Institute.

Catriona has won a number of awards includingthe Founders Prize and the Anne RedpathAward from the Scottish Society of WomenArtists, and the Morton Fraser Award from VisualArts Scotland.

Her work has been exhibited at the RSA, the RGI,the Paisley Art Institute and the Royal Society ofPortrait Painters in London.

Over the years Catriona has exhibited widely innumerous mixed shows in Edinburgh, Aberdeen,London and in South of England and her paintingsare held in both public and private collections inUK, Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Spainand Hong Kong.

Gallery commentBringing Catriona’s work to the gallery has been something of a long-term aim and we aredelighted that despite a busy schedule she agreed to join this exhibition. We have been asked frequentlyby clients to source her work and have waitedpatiently for Catriona’s schedule to be able toaccommodate our requests. We are confident of herappeal and look forward to introducing her work tothose who may not be familiar with it.

Stephen Carruthers studied art at GlasgowSchool of Art from 1979 to 1983 where hegraduated BA Hons. He has been a professionalartist for many years and today works from hisstudio in the West of Scotland and in Francewhere he enjoys the scope to work en-plein air, sketching his subjects in pastel before developingthe themes into oil paintings in the studio.

His work is distinctive for its many layers of oilthat create layers and texture together with arichness of colour that often results in a tapestryeffect. His subjects vary from landscapes, both inScotland and in France, to more recently thenovel painting of gardens and allotments.

Stephen has received many awards for his workincluding The JD Kelly Award from the GSA, TheScottish Art Club Award, and the Mabel KinlayAward for Painting. He is an elected member of The Glasgow Art Club, an elected Councilmember of The SAAC and is a past president ofVisual Arts Scotland.

His work features in a number of LondonGalleries where in recent years he has developeda keen following among collectors of the work ofScottish artists. His exhibitions include shows atThe Royal Scottish Academy, Chelsea Art Fair, TheContemporary Fine Art Gallery, Eton, TheOlympia Fine Art Fair, and Battersea Art Fair.

He exhibits in Scotland only on a selective basisand hence the opportunity to view and buy hiswork north of the border is limited.

Gallery commentStephen’s work has gained both in stature andpopularity in recent years. He has a unique subtletyof tone in his painting and a variety of colour in hispalette which is used to great effect often tending toreflect the colours of the season in which he is painting. The tranquility of composition and his willingness tovary subject matter means that there is a constantfreshness in his work that gives it an on-going appeal. We never tire of his painting and always receivepositive comment when we have his work on the walls.

Matt Curtis was born in Towbridge, Wiltshire in1969 and having a father in the Royal Navy meantthat he was moved around the country in hisearly life. He eventually settled in Edinburghwhere he earned a place at Art College studyingillustration and media design.

He began his working life as a freelance illustratorworking mainly on illustrations for variousAgencies and companies such as the ForestryCommission. After a few years as an illustrator hebegan to experiment in fine art and in oils. Hisearly focus was on aviation art, portraits andlandscapes. His work was exhibited in manyspecialist galleries and included the Guild ofAviation Artists Aero Art among many others.

Recently Matt began to specialise in smallcontemporary still life subjects working exclusively in oils. He draws his inspiration from the 17th Century Dutch artists and alsofrom some current still life specialist painters such as David A Leffel. He tries to ensure anindividual touch by introducing a slight“quirkiness” to his subjects, sometimes withminiature robots or Russian dolls positionedalongside more conventional still life subjects suchas jugs and glassware.

As well as being an accomplished still life andportrait painter, Matt is also a member of theGuild of Aviation Artists. His work is highlyregarded and hangs in many private collections as far afield as Australia, Russia, the USA andScandinavia.

Matt was commissioned to produce the GalleryLogo – the Red Jug with Paintbrushes, and thenagain to produce the gallery Christmas card, bothof which as paintings could have been sold manytimes over such was the client feedback.

Matt’s paintings take so long to produce that it is rare to have more than one for sale at any one time.

Gallery commentMatt has taken many months to produce the workfor this exhibition and given his popularity we don’texpect to have the pieces in the gallery for long.Indeed we now have clients who are avid collectorsof his work and who request phone calls as soon ashis paintings arrive. Although Matt has beenpainting successfully for years we feel we have“discovered” his talent, and we simply cannot getenough of his painstaking and meticulous still lifepaintings, which are always beautifully crafted.

Aine Divine is an accomplished portrait artistwho has been painting professionally for 15 years.Born in 1970 in west Cork Ireland, Aine studiedArt and Design at the Crawford College of Art inCork where she gained an Honours Degree inFine Art (painting). She then attended theUniversity College Cork for two years to gain theHigher Diploma in the principles of teaching art.

Aine (pronounced “Onya”) completed a numberof important commissions while still resident inIreland, including a portrait of the pianist ‘CharlesLynch’, the high court judge ‘Harvey Kenny’ and apainting of the Irish Attorney General’s fatherpresented to him on his inauguration.

A selection of Aine’s portraits were shortlistedfor exhibition in the ‘Irish National PortraitAwards’ three years in a row, and her oil portraitof J.Russell was an award winner in the third year.

Aine moved to Scotland in 1996 and now livesand works in Roslin, Midlothian.

Since moving to Scotland she has exhibited widelyand has undertaken many prestigious portraitcommissions. In 2004, three of her portraits wereselected for exhibition by the Society of MiniaturePainters at the Mall Galleries in London.

Not long after, Aine was selected by Rolf Harris as one of the portrait artists to paint Dr. MoMowlam for his BBC TV show Star Portraits. In competition against two other establishedportrait painters Aine’s portrait was the onechosen by Mo Mowlam for installation in her home.

Working predominately in oil and watercolour, her portrait style, while realistic can be describedas painterly and loose.

Aine has since moved on to painting othersubject matter and it is this work that brings her to the gallery as part of the Gullane MastersExhibition 2010.

Gallery commentAine’s fame to date is as a portrait artist and in that subject she is extremely accomplished. Less well known is her other work, which shespeculatively brought into the gallery for us to view.We were immediately attracted to her painterlystyle and clever choice of subject matter and in our view there is little doubt that she will quicklyestablish herself as an all round highly competentartist with a collector base. In our view she isdefinitely “one to watch”.

Marion Drummond was born Glasgow in 1958,and has lived in Scotland all her life.

She is largely self taught as an artist and over the years has developed a strong and maturestyle that has made her work popular withenthusiasts and collectors alike. As is often thecase with natural talent it transcends thesometimes limiting strictures of formal teachingand Marion’s painting has a freedom ofinterpretation and application that is admiredgreatly by many, both from within and withoutthe contemporary art scene.

She likes to combine her love of walking withpainting al fresco, capturing life in all its momentsof urgency and immediacy. Marion is anaccomplished still life and floral artist as well asproducing sought after landscapes full of moodand atmosphere. Her versatility is a feature of herwork and she can comfortably switch subjectmatter to produce stunning figurative pieces.

She works mainly in oils and enjoys the mediumfor the intensity that can be gained throughworking with cloth rags and bare fingers.

Marion says she is influenced by a number ofartists but greatly admires the work of StephenCarruthers, Jenny Saville and Enid Foote Watts.

She has exhibited widely in recent years and ispopular in a growing number of commercialgalleries where collectors seek out her shows. She has held a number of very successful soloexhibitions in selected Galleries in various centresthroughout Scotland.

She has exhibited in the Royal Glasgow Institute(RGI) and the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh(RSA).

Gallery commentMarion is one of our favourite artists. Her free stylecoupled with a wonderful tone gives her work aunique subtle beauty and strength. As collectorsourselves we are genuinely torn in preferencebetween her still life/floral work and her figuratives –both of which we consider to be of the highestquality. Whenever we bring new work from Marioninto the gallery we receive strong positive commentfrom clients and we are not surprised that it seldomlasts long on the walls before red dots appear.

Claire Harrigan was born in Kilmarnock in 1964.As a child she grew up with both parents as artteachers and talented practising painters – hermother being a respected botanical artist and her father being James Harrigan the popularlandscape artist. Her childhood environment was therefore full of creative stimulation andhighly inspirational.

Claire studied art at Glasgow School of Art from1982 – 86 graduating BA Hons in Fine Art(Drawing and Painting). She very quickly came tothe attention of the Glasgow based art galleriesand set up studio to become a full time artist. Herearly exhibitions proved successful and demandfor her work grew steadily.

Her first solo show was staged at the MacualayGallery at Stenton and this was repeated everytwo years until 1997. Since then and over theyears, her solo shows have been a major featureof her work schedule alternating every two yearsbetween prestigious galleries in London andGlasgow with mixed shows also beingaccommodated in many of the major UKcommercial galleries.

Claire has been the recipient of many majorawards including The Mary Armour Award at theGlasgow School of Art, The Lily McDougall Awardby the Scottish Society Artists and ArtistCraftsmen, James Torrance Memorial Award bythe Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, TheLatimer Award by the Royal Scottish Academy, andthe Glasgow Arts Club Fellowship award, RSW.

In 1992, Claire became an Elected ProfessionalMember of the Royal Scottish WatercolourSociety – RSW. She was listed in “20th CenturyPainters and Sculptors” by Frances Spalding andthen again listed in “Who’s Who in Art” 26thedition published by Art Trade Press Ltd. In 2007she wrote and had published the book entitled“Abstract and Colour techniques in painting”.

Her painting style is vibrant and bold in use ofcolour with a high key palette a permanentfeature of her work. She paints distinctively withcolour and abstract elements working welltogether in clever and mature compositions. Sheuses predominantly mixed media with acrylic, watercolour or gouache as a base platform upon which to build imagery in collage, pastel or other media.

Gallery commentWe consider Claire Harrigan to be one of Scotland’smost outstanding talents and have been admirers ofher work for many years. Her father James Harriganis one of our favourite Scottish landscape artists. We are delighted that Claire agreed to join thisexhibition and believe her work will sit well, compliment and add to the quality of work fromother artists on show.

As art collectors ourselves, over the years we havedeveloped something of a discerning eye, but arealways drawn by vibrant colour and more recently bythe nearly abstract in style – both of which arereadily apparent in Claire Harrigan’s work.

Brenda Lenaghan was born in Galashiels in 1941.She studied Commercial and Graphic Design at Glasgow School of Art gaining her Diploma in 1963.

After leaving Art School she was employed byBernat Klien the borders company in Galashiels who specialised in the manufacture of tweed andsupplied many of the great names in design includingChanel, Yves Saint Laurent and many others.

Brenda left to become an art teacher and taughtin various Glasgow schools before settling in StColumba’s School Kilmacolm. She moved to EastLothian in 1970 and started to paint on a full timeprofessional basis at that time.

Since then Brenda has exhibited widely throughoutthe UK and lists among her galleries a number ofprestigious galleries in London. She holds at leastone solo exhibition on an annual basis and inrecent years has become highly selective in thechoice of galleries exhibiting her work.

Brenda was awarded the coveted Anne RedpathAward on two occasions, in 1975 and 1983, andwon the SSWA Special Award in 1980.

She has exhibited regularly with the SSWA(Scottish Society of Women Artists), the RSA, RGI and the RSW. In 1984 Brenda was elected to the RSW.

In recent times Brenda’s painting has focused on subjects inspired by her travels to India, Tibet,China, Europe, Russia and Japan. In particular herwork has been greatly influenced by Art in Japanwhere her son currently lives and works as alandscape architect.

Gallery commentAlthough Brenda has exhibited with us once beforeit was in a relatively small way, and this is the firsttime she has participated in a major exhibitionwhere we can show her work to full advantage.Brenda’s style is quite unique and highly stylised intreatment. The figures in her paintings have a graceand charm that mirrors Brenda’s personality, withthe subjects drawing you in and capturing yourinterest. We believe Brenda’s work brings somethingnew to the gallery and we are delighted sheaccepted our invitation to submit work for thisparticular exhibition.

He has made “trademark” his pieces featuringfigurative city life and at a level that his work isinstantly recogniseable to his many admirers and collectors.

Gallery commentJoe’s participation in this exhibition is anothernoteable first for the gallery and we warmlywelcome him to the exhibition. Jack Morrocco was born in Edinburgh in 1953. Heschooled at Madras College, St Andrews and thenstudied art at Duncan of Jordanstone College ofArt in Dundee between 1970 and 1974. He wasawarded a “highly commended” post diploma inhis postgraduate year in 1975. During thesummer of 1973 he was selected to study at therenowned Hospitalfield House in Arbroath wherehe worked under the tutelage of the exceptionalpop artist Peter Blake.

In 1975 Jack won the Farquhar Reid TravellingScholarship and spent his time in Paris andFlorence. He was taught by his gifted uncle AlbertoMorrocco who was principal teacher of painting atDuncan Jordanstone at that time and who wasresponsible for nurturing many of the youngtalented students who studied there in the 70’s.

Following his period at Art College andsubsequent study Jack opted not to enterteaching which was the usual route for artgraduates at that time, and established anadvertising, marketing and design consultancybusiness in Dundee. He divided his time betweenrunning that business and painting for exhibitionsthroughout Scotland.

In 1997, he became a full time professional artistand today works from his studio here in Scotland

and also from his second studio on the Coted’Azur in the South of France. Clearly inspired byhis Uncle Alberto and while remaining true to aproud lineage, Jack has developed a powerful andeffective distillation and unique style that isdistinctively his own. His maturity as an artist isevident from his versatility that sees him move withease and confidence from still life, both traditionaland modern, to landscape and then to figurative.

He has developed a strong following of collectorsfrom far and wide exhibiting mainly in Londonand in boutique galleries in the South of France.

Jack has become ever more selective in hisgalleries in recent years and is booked forexhibitions for some years ahead.

Gallery commentSince Jack’s work first came into the gallery last yearhe has been ever present as an artist in our majormixed exhibitions. A glance at his page on ourwebsite shows why – the quality and variety of hiswork is quite exceptional and clearly has wideappeal, especially to the discerning art collector. Wenow have clients who wish to be advised every timewe bring new pieces into the gallery.

We are delighted to have secured Jack’s only Scottishsolo show of 2010, which is being staged in October.

Sandy Murphy was born in 1956 and raised inAyrshire in West of Scotland. He studied art atGlasgow School of Art between 1976 and 1980graduating with an Honours degree. He studiedunder David Donaldson who had a formidablereputation based on his passion for sounddraughtsmanship and who imparted this via histeaching staff at that time who included JamesRobertson, Duncan Shanks and Barbara Rae.

Sandy left the GSA and then completed Teachertraining and taught art in Ayrshire until 1985. Heleft teaching to become a full time professionalartist in that year.

Since then Sandy has had numerous soloexhibitions in various prestigious galleries bothhere in Scotland and in London and his reputationas one of today’s most important painters goesfrom strength to strength.

His landscapes are rich and very painterly and canbe heavily textured. The Joan Eardley influence issometimes readily apparent, yet Sandy has hisown recogniseable style, especially in the

decidedly abstract type of composition that hebrings to bear. His still life paintings are wellbalanced and cleverly constructed in terms of useof space and colour.

Sandy was elected to the RSW (Royal ScottishSociety of Painters in Watercolours) in 1996 andto the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts(RGI) in 2000.

Gallery commentThis is the first time we have had Sandy’s work in the gallery and we are delighted he agreed to join this particular exhibition. There is little doubtSandy is one of our leading Scottish contemporaryartists and over the years he has built a solidfoundation of admirers and collectors of his work. Wehave waited for the right moment to invite Sandy intothe gallery and we believe he adds significant weightto the quality of work we seek to show.

We are of the view that his work represents soundcollector value and that over time his alreadygrowing reputation will mean he becomes even moresought after.

Joan Renton was born in 1935, schooled inDumfries at Dumfries Academy and studied art atthe Edinburgh College of Art from 1953 – 57.

While still in her school years Joan moved withher family to Hawick where she came under thewatchful eye of her art teacher Bill Finlayson whointroduced her to the work of Ann Redpath. When she enrolled at the Edinburgh School ofArt she came under the tutelage of Gillies,Maxwell and Robin Philipson, all of who served toinfluence Joan’s style and artistic identity.

Having originated in the West of Scotland, Joanwas familiar with the work of the Glasgow Boysand also of Cadell and Peploe, and so it was notsurprising that she quickly learned how to movewith ease from a strict representational treatmentto the more abstract in her painting style.

Joan followed her graduation with a Post Diplomaand then a travelling scholarship to Spain in 1959.She married the following year and had 3 children.

She taught art in schools up to 1981 when sheturned to painting on a full time basis. ThereafterJoan exhibited extensively throughout the UK inmany of our most prestigious galleries. She hasheld over 24 solo shows and exhibited

internationally in France, Holland, Spain Germany,Hong Kong and in the USA.

Joan has won many awards including the RSWBetty Davis Award in 1992 and the Anne RedpathAward at the SAAC.

Her work is held in many important collectionsincluding four in HRH the Duke of Edinburgh’s,The City of Edinburgh Art Centre and a specialcommission to mark the Marquis and Marchionessof Lothian’s 50th wedding anniversary.

Joan is past president of the Scottish Society ofWomen Artists which under her leadershiptransformed to become the Scottish Artists andArtist Craftsmen (SAAC), and is an electedmember of the RSW and past council member.

Gallery commentThis is Joan’s second exhibition with us and we aredelighted she agreed to accept our invitation. Herwork virtually sold out last time round and we werenot surprised. Be it still life or landscape herdistinctive style and sense of composition oozesconfidence and class. With her painting Joan bringsmuch gravitas to the gallery and to this exhibition, with her work readily demonstrating why she isconsidered one of our most respected artists.

Gallery commentHelen Turner is one of our most established andhighly rated artists and her work has proved highlypopular among clients when she has been in thegallery. Her landscapes of Scotland are stunning in their facility to capture the light and mood of the moment and they have great depth andperspective. Her floral and still life pieces arealways sought after and simply fly off the walls inthe gallery. Helen’s last show with us sold out andmany paintings would have sold a few times oversuch was the demand.
