2 Gulmarg Biosphere

Whether you are a bird-lover, naturalist orsimply looking for an adventure, a hikethrough the rich vegetation of the biosphereis a must. Aptly named, the place is home tosome of the more endangered andprotected species like the Leopard, MuskDeer, Black Bear, Red Fox, etc. As far as theflora of the place is concerned, the Conifersaccount for almost 90% of the forest cover.Deodars, Pines and Horse chestnuts areother principal tree species. Deciduousflowering shrubs like Himalayan Indigo andKashmir Fasle Spirea are also a commonsight here. The ground cover is made up of avariety of herbs and mosses. Carry a pair ofbinoculars, as you might just sight the BlueRock Pigeon, Snow Cock, Jungle Crow,Griffon vulture or or other rare bird species,flying through or taking a breather on thetowering conifers. The ideal time to see the

wild animals is considered betweenSeptember to March while the ideal time tosee birds is considered March to May. Marchto May is also the time when the biosphereis left fragrant by the blooming andflowering of many of the trees and shrubsresident here and is dotted with akaleidoscope of flowers. For those who areinterested, there are tourist lodges easilyavailable in Gulmarg. And those who arelooking for more adventure can opt forspending a night at the camping sites closeto the reserve. 3 Kongdori

More than a site to see, will give you a sightto remember. Board the Gondola at thecable station at that will take you up to at analtitude of 3099.6 meters- it’s practically avertical, upright, ride and lasts for about 10

minutes. During the ride itself, you will gothrough tall fir trees, which then open out tograssy slopes below dotted with wildflowersor snow, if it’s winter. Again, depending onthe season, you either step out on lush,green grass or knee-high snow. From , thesnow peaks seem close enough to touch. Atthe , if it isn’t hazy or cloudy, you will get themost astounding view of the Nanga Parbatlooming majestically in the distance. Youmay also be able to make out the peaks ofK2 on a clear day. Ask the natives here topoint the LOC (India-Pakistan border) whichis clearly visible from here.

4 Baba Reshi Shrine

Built in 1480, it is a highly revered religioussite. Dedicated to Baba Reshi, a Muslimscholar and Saint, who lived during the reignof the erstwhile king of Kashmir, Zain-ul-Abidin. Baba reshi was a revered member in

the court of the monarch. Here you will geta glimpse of the 15th century Persian andMughal architectural styles with someremarkable wood carvings inside themosque. One of the sacred shrines in thewhole state, Baba Reshi Shrine attracts a lotof devotees from all region, visiting thesacred monument to ofer their prayers.Sitting amidst lush green lawns, thesurroundings provide a peaceful andtranquil atmosphere. The garden aroundthe shrine is huge enough to accommodatethousands of people at a time. You can seethe tall spires of the mosque from adistance and access it by means of sledges,horses and field chutes.

5 Gulmarg Golf Course
