Gum PortraitsStudents learned techniques to draw a human face in proportion while filling the composition of the page. The students learned blending techniques to match and render their unique skin tone. Lastly, we attached a bal-loon to act as a blown up bubble as an added 3-D ele-ment.
5th grade - Self Portraits
CamouflageStudents learned about contemporary artist Liu Bolin and the Camouflage Art from his series “Hiding in the City.”In this project, students design a pattern inside of a blank chameleon using a limited color palette, geometric or organic shapes.After their design was completed they created an envi-ronment for the chameleon could hide in.

Thiebaud SculpturesOne of the artist features in the Pop Art unit is Wayne Thiebaud. Studying Thiebaud’s work, students created intricate clay sculptures inspired by the style of his vibrant paintings.
9th grade - Pop Art food sculptures
Clouds are a common subject matter in student art work. With the knowledge gained from this lesson, students will be able to identify different types of clouds and how to use them to effect the mood of their artwork.Students learned facts about the four major types of clouds - cirrus, stratus, cumulus, cumulonimbus clouds and their precipitation. They explored many different media to find the material that would most accurately represent the texture of each type of cloud.
2nd grade - Science in the arts

Students learned about aerodynamics by building water bottle rockets that were designed in class. They tested different fin shapes to discover which one would make the water rocket fly the highest.For extra credit students came up will techniques to let the rocket come back down safely. They tried a foam tip on the nose of the rocket, curving the fins, and even designing different parachutes.
7th grade - Technology in the arts

During this lesson students studied the engineering that goes into bridge structures. Each style of bridge is designed for different situations. They created a technical drawing that would be used in an environment of their choice.Students also depicted their bridge using one-point perspective, placing the vanishing point anywhere on the horizon that they choose.

The art journal assignments are an opportunity for students to better connect the art lesson to their own lives. Student are encouraged to write responses that describe, analyze, and interpret their art based on evidence. Connection are make to art history, contemporary artist, and the art making experience.

This art project “stinks!” For this lesson the students took off one of their shoes to draw at an enlarged scale. Students had to use measure their shoe and then use math skills to get draw the shoe at 150% the original size. Creating a drawing at this scale allows the students to focus on some of the small details in the shoe.
