4. RECUPERATOR AND BUFFER. - -

General Precautions.

(i) Before firing.

Cam should be taken to see that the recuperator andbuffer are correctly charged,timat- timcre is no leakage attime stuffing-boxes, timat tine isolating valve is open, thattime cylinder blockis firmly nutted imp to time lug of time gun,and tine piston rod and ram to time front cap, amrd that timecut-off gearis in adjustmneent.

It is necessaryto strainthe oil beforecimarging time recu-pcrator or buffer.

During severeweather, recuperatoraand buffers simouldbe protectedas mucin as possiblefrom tine cold.

Any operationsfor time replacementof worn or defectiveparts wimicim necessitateemnptying time recoil system shouldbecarried out only under qualifiedsupervision.

5. THE RECUPE~ATOR.

(i) To charge the recuperator with liquid.Lasim time gun to time cradle, level the cradlelongitudinally

andtransverselywitin a chinometer, renroveplugs N and L,and attach time pump connection and adapter. Open timeby-passvalve 1\1 and pump in oil until it overflows at N.Replaceplug N and pump in oil until the tail rod is flumshwitim time rearendof time slot in time cradlecap. 6?f pints of buffer oil.

(ii) To charge the recuperator with air.

Before charging the air reservoirwith air it is importantto seetimat tine securingcollar is on the recumperatorram, inorderto preventtine mama from beingforcedout to tine rearwhenunderpressure, andthmat the correctquantity of liquidis in the recuperator. Then proceedas fellows: Attach tineair pump to the bracket on tine trail, remove-plug H andattachm the adapterand pressuregauge; conmnectthe pumnp

If correct, cloievalve K, remmmove time mudapterandgauge andreplaceplumg H.If tine pressureis not correct, pn-oceedasin (iv).

(iv) To replenishair pressure lost by leakage.

Proceedas for charging time recuporator wit-in air, bmmtbefore openingvalve K to adnrit air to time reservoirpumppressurein pipe to 580 lbs. per sq. in. (Mark 111*, 600 lbs.per sq. in.), andseethat the correctamountof liquid is intine rccuperator.

(v) Toreplenishliquid lostby leakagewithout releasingthe air pressure.

Leakagefrom the recuperator,if not excessive, can bemadeup by meansof tine liquid pump. It is not necessarytoreleasetimeair pressumrefor tinispurpose.Proceedasfollows:Time pump should be filled, turned nozzle upwards, and afew tumrns given to time screw ium orderto remove any air.Removeplug L andscrew time pump into placeinn tine fillinghole. Thecapacityof the pump is aboutone-fifth of a pint.

N0TI.—Air cannotescapeunlessthereis afault in valveK.Taking air pressuretoo often is to be deprecated,as somepressureis invariably lost on eacim occasion. The correctposition of time tail rod siuotmld be ta-ken to mean that therecuperatoris in serviceableworking order, and if the tailrodis not in the correctposition it is probably due to liquidleakagefrom the recuperatorcylinder. -

(vi) To eject oil which has leaked into the air chamber. -

With a worn cylinder or adefectivepackingof time floatingpiston it is possiblefor liquid to passinto theair reservoir. When timi~is suspected, pmmt time gun at maximummr elevation, removeplug H and openvalve K slowly. Time hiqimid willbe forced out, and when air only be-gins to issue, closevalve K. Tine pressureshould be checked.

After liquid has been forced into time recuperatorby timescrew punmp severaltimes, the above operation should becarried out. Disregard of this may lend to dangerouspressuresin time air reservoir and consequentdamagetothe equipnuent. - -
