INTRODUCTION

It started six hundred years ago.

Some farmers came together and decided to

improve life in their village.

They called themselves the Gung Ho Guild, after

the name of their oldest member, Grandmaster Gung

Ho.

They had just three rules to follow:

1. Never give up

2. Always be humble

3. Serve your community

The Gung Ho Guild kept growing, until it had

members all over the world.

Along the way, they added one more rule.

4. Protect your village from zombies

Troy and Xin are junior members of the Gung HoGuild.

Troy enjoys making cool gadgets out of everyday

junk.

Xin invents stuff too, but mostly she's busy

keeping Troy out of trouble.

They share their awesome project ideas on the

Gung Ho Guild's website.

Young members from all over the world log in

here to discuss their inventions.

They also share ideas on how to keep their

schools safe from zombies.You can recognise them by their enthusiastic cry,

"Gung Ho! Let's make it!"

1AT THE SCIENCE FAIR

It was a special day for Troy and Xin.

East Coast High School was having its annual

Science Fair.

When they turned up, the other kids were already

in the hall, setting up their experiments.

Troy and Xin rushed to their table.They couldn't wait to show off their project.

It was an awesome robot that could do a lot of

things!

Troy opened his bag. And then he howled in

dismay.

"Oh, no!" he said. "I left the batteries at home!"

Xin just shook her head. "Don't worry. I packed

some last night."

Troy grinned sheepishly. "Thanks Xin! You're a

lifesaver. As always!"

Troy and Xin finished assembling their robot.

They switched it on.Their robot wheeled around the hall, beeping and

repeating science facts, and also telling some pretty

awful jokes.

The other students rushed over to check it out.

Mrs. Wong, the assistant vice principal,

approached them.

"What's that?" she asked with a frown.

"We call it the Robotic Teacher's Assistant," Xin

said proudly. "It will help teachers conduct lessons and

entertain the kids."

But then something went wrong. Terribly wrong.

STRANGE VISITORS

The Robotic Teacher's Assistant, or RTA, started

to jerk around.

And smoke came out of its head!

The teachers and students looked startled. They

backed away from it.

Xin ran over to switch it off. "Troy! Did you

meddle with the circuits?"

"Actually, I replaced the whole motherboard,"

Troy said nervously. "I wanted to add some new

features. Maybe I messed up while installing it?"

As Troy fiddled with the robot, Xin noticed that a

man and his son were watching them.

"That's an interesting invention," the man said.

"Can it do anything special?"

Troy finished tinkering with the robot and closed

the control panel.

"Yes," Troy answered. "You can activate a special

DISCO mode which makes it dance."Xin almost choked. "What DISCO mode? It's

supposed to be a teacher's assistant. Troy! What did

you do?"

Troy took her aside. He pulled out a notebook

from his pocket.

"Look here," Troy said, once he found the right

page. "I downloaded these instructions from the Gung

Ho Guild website. Trust me, this robot will be the star

of the Science Fair. You want us to win, don't you?"

Meanwhile, the man and his son were inspecting

the robot closely."Did you hear them?" the man said in a low voice.

"It's a dancing robot that also teaches science."

His son clapped excitedly.

"Yezzzz, Father," the boy said. "I must have one

for my birthday. Must-zzzz."

And then he started to drool all over the robot.

SIGN OF DANGER!

Xin saw what happened. She was disgusted.

"Be careful!" she said to the man and his son.

"Troy, we better get this robot back to our table."

"I'm so sorry," the man said with a smile. "My son

goes crazy when he sees a robot."

Then he noticed Troy's notebook. His eyes grewwide.

"That must be the manual for this robot!" the

man exclaimed. "Can I have a look?"

He moved closer to take the notebook from Troy,

but Xin quickly dragged Troy away.

"Sorry, we haven't finished debugging the robot,"

Xin said curtly. "Troy, let's go."

The man and his son walked away.

Xin looked worried. "Did you notice anything

weird about that boy?"

Troy shuddered as he wiped their robot dry with a

rag."Yes," Troy said, "he is far too old to be drooling.

Yucks!"

But Xin was referring to something else.

"Did you see that sleepy look in the boy's eyes?"

Xin said. "His skin is all greenish, plus he smells really

bad. Do you think he might be a "

Troy raised his eyebrows. "A zombie? Oh my

Gung Ho, I hope you're wrong!"

Troy flipped through his notebook until he found

the page with instructions for identifying zombies.

"Look at this checklist," Troy said, his handsshaking. "You were right. That wasn't the man's son, it

was his zombie!"

XIN'S CRAZY PLAN

They went back to their table. A bell rang. The

Science Fair was about to begin!

But Xin couldn't concentrate on their robot

anymore.

While the kids were showing off their projects,

Xin dragged Troy around the hall to search for the

strange man and his zombie.

Suddenly Troy remembered a report he came

across on the Gung Ho Guild website.

"Hey Xin," he said, "I read about this mad

scientist who wanted to join the Gung Ho Guild many

years ago. But they rejected him because he was selfish

and rude."

Xin stopped and turned to Troy. "And?"

Troy had to take a deep breath before he

continued.

"This guy is all grown up now. He calls himself Dr.

Z. And he recently built a bio-fabricator to print hisown zombies."

Xin bit her lip and thought hard. "Do you think

it's this same guy? But what's he doing here?"

At that moment someone screamed in terror.

It was their classmate Kala.

Xin pointed. "The zombie is destroying Kala's

volcano project! We have to stop it."

Troy suddenly realised something. "Maybe Dr. Z

doesn't care about the other projects. Maybe he's after

our robot instructions."

Xin's eyes grew wide. "I bet you're right!" sheexclaimed, quickly looking over her shoulder. "And

that's why he almost snatched your notebook! Quick,

follow me. I have a plan."

They ran to Xin's locker. She took the notebook

from Troy and tore off the cover. Then she wrapped

this around her Mathematics workbook.

She left the rest of Troy's notebook in her locker.

"We have to get the zombie away from there,"

Xin said as she ran back to the hall. "Maybe we can

lure it out into the garden."

Troy hurried after her. "But how?"

5

TROY FALLS

Xin and Troy stood at the front entrance of the

hall. Xin saw Zombie Boy trying to sit on one of the

projects, a big aeroplane made of cardboard.

"Hey, Zombie Boy!" Xin yelled. She held up her

Mathematics workbook, with Troy's notebook cover

wrapped around it. "Is this what you're after?"

The zombie turned towards them. It recognised

the notebook cover and yelped in delight.

"Let's go," Troy said urgently. "Before it catches

us!"

They ran to the stairs and went down two steps at

a time.

They could hear the zombie scrambling behind

them.

But Xin couldn't keep up the pace.

She was gasping for breath so hard that she had to

slow down.Troy tried to drag her along. "Come on, Xin!

Zombie Boy is catching up!"

In his excitement he tripped over a rock and fell.

"Arrgh!" Troy moaned. "I hurt my ankle!"

Xin could feel her heart pounding away.

The zombie was getting closer already. What

could she do?

"Quick," she instructed Troy, "hide behind those

trash bins. I'll distract Zombie Boy."

She was tired out from all the running, but she

knew she had to go on."Hey! Greenface!" Xin screamed as she continued

running towards the school garden. "Over here! I have

the Gung Ho Manual! Catch me!"

Troy hid behind the row of trash bins, rubbing his

ankle.

He could hear Zombie Boy hurry after Xin.

"Gnash, gnash!" Zombie Boy said. "I must catch

you. Must-zzzz."

He left a trail of drool behind him.

A DESPERATE INVENTION

Troy had an idea.

He quickly hobbled back to the hall.

No one else seemed aware that there was a

zombie in school. They carried on with their Science

Fair activities.

Troy spotted the Robotic Teacher's Assistant

sitting silently under the table.

He pulled out his screwdriver and started taking

it apart.

His hands were shaking.

"Gung Ho!" Troy mumbled to himself. "Let's make

it!"

He grabbed an LED, a battery, some wires, a strip

of velcro and some cardboard.

Then he hobbled off to the school garden.

When he got there, he saw that Xin had climbed

up a tree.Zombie Boy was trying to follow her up.

Xin rolled up her notebook and tried to whack

Zombie Boy with it.

But she lost her grip and the notebook fell to the

ground!

Dr Z rushed out from behind a pillar and grabbed

it.

"Heeeeheeeee!" Dr Z laughed like a hyena.

"Finally, I have the secrets of the Gung Ho Guild.

Heeee, heeee, heeeee!"

Troy quickly assembled the robot parts that hehad with him.

When he was done, he crossed his fingers and

hoped that it would work.

Then he ran towards Xin.

"Xin!" Troy shouted. "Close your eyes!"

Xin was horrified. "Yeugh! Zombie Boy drooled

on my foot!"

Troy strapped his invention on his left wrist, like a

watch.

"Trust me, Xin!" Troy said.

Xin closed her eyes.

Zombie Boy turned around and stared angrily atTroy.

Big mistake.

Troy turned on his Zombie Signaliser and

activated the ZDFC (Zombie Disintegration Flashing

Code).

"Take that, you unhygienic drooler!" he yelled.

GOODBYE, GREENFACE

The LED on Troy's wrist device started to blink.

Flash, flash, flash. Flash. Flash, flash.

Flash, flash. Flash. Flash, flash, flash, flash.

"Oh my Gung Ho!" Troy muttered as Zombie Boy

got closer. So close that Troy could smell his stinky

breath. "I hope I got the code right!"

Sure enough, the flashing pattern started to

interfere with the programming in Zombie Boy's brain.

"Yaaargh!" Zombie Boy said. He wanted to snarl

menacingly, but somehow when he opened his mouth a

yawn came out instead. "Must switch off your Zapper-

zzzzzzz! Must-zzzz. Master, I am disappeari-zzzzzz!"

Before Zombie Boy could finish his sentence, his

flesh started to melt.

Soon he was reduced to a pile of greenish goopy

biopolymers.

Troy laughed. "Yay! Gung Ho! We did it!"Xin opened her eyes and saw the green goop on

the ground.

"Where's Greenface?" she asked, confused. "And

what's that awful mess?"

Troy helped her get down from the tree. He

pointed to the ground.

"Don't worry," he said. "My Zombie Signaliser

cancelled Zombie Boy's PFP, or Physical Form

Programming, and turned him into this

environmentally friendly base material. So it won't

poison the grass."Dr. Z suddenly yelled at them.

"Urgggh!" he said. "What is this crazy stuff??

He held up the notebook and showed them one of

the pages:

" W=____ ?

"I came here to steal your Gung Ho notes," he

said, "not do sums! I hate sums!"

He threw the notebook on the ground and

stamped his feet."Curse the two of you! I'll be back soon. You

haven't seen the last of me!"

He walked off in anger.

BACK TO THE FAIR

Xin and Troy went back to the hall.

"Good thing you swapped the covers," Troy said,

"or Dr. Z would have succeeded in stealing our Gung

Ho notes."

Xin nodded. "The real copy is safe in my locker.

You know, you really built an awesome Zombie

Signaliser. We should share the instructions on the

Gung Ho website. So other kids can make it too."

Troy took the device off his wrist. "You're right. I

almost forgot about this. Now I have to take it apart

and fit the pieces back into our robot."

Xin gave him a friendly slap on the shoulder.

"Gung Ho! Let's make it! Just make sure it doesn't turn

anyone else into a pile of green goop, okay?"

They remembered the look on Dr. Z's face, and

burst out laughing all over again.
