A few words from our Principal...

Dear Parents and Carers

School Uniform

Thank you to all of our students who come everyday wearing full school uniform. The school regularly

receives positive comments from our community on how well presented our students are here at South.

The clothing pool now stocks girls hair bands and scrunches made in the fabric of our school uniform. One of

our clever mums Allison Eveleigh has provided us with these, and I’m sure will sell like hot cakes.

A reminder that it is school policy for all students to bring a red broad brimmed hat to school each day. If you

require assistance will school uniforms please make an appointment to see the Principal.

Back by popular demand

Mention head lice and most of us instantly develop an itch. While head lice and nits, (the eggs of head lice) are

certainly annoying and persistent, they're not dangerous. Here's everything you need to know to rid your kids of

head lice and nits.http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/environment/headlice/Pages/nitbusters.aspx

During school holiday periods are a perfect opportunity to tackle and rid your child's hair of nits. These

annoying little creatures go around schools every year and we have certainly had our share during Term 1.

Please take the time to check your child's hair and treat if necessary.

School zone safety

A reminder to parents about the operation of school speed zones around the Easter holidays.

School zones exist for the safety of children and families; they will operate on Thursday 28 March, then

resume on Tuesday 2 April.

Forty-kilometres-an-hour school speed zones operate across New South Wales at all school sites on gazetted

school days, which are all days the school is open, even pupil-free days.

Find out more: http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/roadsafety/children/schoolroadsafety/schoolzoneprogram.html

Voluntary School Contributions

Each year the school requests a small contribution to assist us in the resources needed to support our

extensive programs.

Lead and colour pencils

Paper

Glue

Tissues

Student exercise books

Photocopying

All stationary

And much much more.........

The voluntary contributions are $40 per student and $10 per additional child. The school will again be raffling a prize—a huge 42” LG TV, which will be drawn in term 3. This is a fabulous prize worth $799. All families

who pay the voluntary contributions by the end of Term 2 will automatically go into the draw.

Thank you for supporting our school.

Happy Easter

Only 3 more sleeps until someone may hop into your garden or bedroom and leave a little surprise!!

To all our students and families, on behalf of the staff, have a wonderful happy Easter. If you are going away

over the long weekend, travel safe and we look forward to seeing you back at school on Tuesday 2nd April.

Kindest regards, Emma Jeffery

Why reduce television time?

Studies have shown we use less energy watching TV than

sitting still.

TV influences the food choice of kids – Australia has a high rate of food advertising during children’s viewing hours.

TV replaces time a child can be active and enjoy physical

activity.

There is an association between TV watching and

being overweight.

40% of children 5 – 12 years report watching an average

of two hours or more of television or videos a day.

Girls’ League Tag

On the 19th March, twelve Gunnedah South School girls went to Narrabri to compete in the 2013 Girls League Tag Competition. Playing against teams from St. Xaviers, Narrabri and Wee Waa, our girls came away with two wins and played fantastically.

I was incredibly proud of the whole team. Not only did they show great improvement as the day went on, they also demonstrated great sportsmanship and exceptional behaviour.

Well done to Stephanie Towns, Leisel Torrens, Emily Garner, Stephanie Mitchell-Roberts, Madilyn Jessup-Little, Bella Barr, Emma McCulloch, Dakota Milne, Claire McGuirk, Charlotte Eather, Holly Hunt and Alyssa Batinic.

I would like to say a huge thankyou to the parents that came along on the day. They were a big support for the girls getting involved and cheering them on.

SRC South Social Students, parents and teachers of Gunnedah South demonstrated how they support friends in need. The SRC Social last Thursday, 21st March was a huge hit with loads of families turning out to help raise funds for Thomas and Hollie Eveleigh who lost their home in a fire over the Christmas holidays.

We raised $1800.00 minus expenses and will be presenting Thomas and Hollie with Target gift cards at our Thursday assembly.

A huge thank you to Ian Doyle’s Butchers who provided us with plenty of meat at such a small cost. Also thank you to Steve Trainer who was DJ on the night and helped create an exciting atmosphere for all to enjoy.

Well done to our SRC students and their parents who ran the night and did such an awesome job. It was a pleasure to work with such caring people and I can’t wait until our next SRC event to do it all over again.

Thank you to all the families that came and supported this event. I’m sure Thomas and Hollie will never forget your generosity and kindness.

Kind Regards,

Mrs Lynda Heath

SRC Coordinator

Year 6 and Kindergarten

Buddies

For another year, year 6 students have been assigned their own kindergarten buddy whom they have been asked to support as they settle into school. Every Tuesday, buddies join together for a short period of time to complete various tasks and lessons.

This week year 6 students helped their buddies with making Easter hats for the Easter Hat Parade. Some buddies went out on a gardening lesson together and other classes had practice sessions of literacy skills.

We will be continuing this program throughout Term 2 as well, offering opportunities for year 6 students to help their buddies with their reading, writing, counting and gross motor skills.

New Procedure at Western Gate

for Infants Students

Here at Gunnedah South, teaching staff are extremely dedicated towards ensuring

the safety of your children while at school.

One area of our school that we would like to improve is Western Gate in the afternoons,

especially now that we have an increased number of K-2 students

leaving the school via this exit.

Our NEW procedures for Western Gate are:

1. Students who walk, will sit on the blue seats under the shelter.

2. Students who are being picked up are to sit on the grass bank and

wait for an adult to collect them.

3. Adults will need to walk inside the gate to collect their children and

hold their hands as they leave.

Please note that these actions only need to be taken for infants students, students in

kindergarten through to year 2.

We would like to thank parents for their efforts in helping us with this matter.

Kind Regards,

Infants Teachers

Next term the kindergarten children will have allocated time in the SAKG program. We will be having an adult cooking session for parents, grandparents, aunties or uncles who would like to come and cook up some tasty recipes and see how the kitchen classes operate! The cooking session will be held on Monday 8th April at 9am in the kitchen. We would love

to see you there.

The kitchen is lots of fun for all the students. It is fun to learn how to cook the food and get

the ingredients from the garden but it’s not lots of fun washing up! Our favourite part is eating the food. It is good to try new

food.

Nathan Bush 5F

We had cooking today and we cooked swirl bread, potato

soup and chocolate pudding. I also think that the SAKGP is a great learning program so that we can help out at home and

other places.
