HELP SAVE 49 ACRES TO PROTECT PLEASANT BAY.Your donation will be MATCHED dollar-for-dollar!
Protect the largest, remainingundeveloped property in the21,000-acre Pleasant BayWatershed that encompasses thetowns of Harwich, Chatham,Orleans and Brewster.
Protect Pleasant Bay water qualitybecause groundwater from the 49acres flows toward the estuary, which is already impaired owing tosurrounding development withseptic systems and consequentnitrogen-loading.
Protect drinking water becausethe 49 acres are located withinthe recharge area for public watersupply wells sites that provideapproximately 31% of the town’sdrinking water to 9,889 house-holds.
Protect wildlife habitats that areused by resident and migratoryspecies for feeding, nesting, and sheltering. The land hosts potential vernal pools that canharbor sensitive species which are otherwise unable to survive without such habitats.Eastern box turtle, a Species of Special Concern in Massachusetts, has been observedin the vicinity.
HCT now has an opportunity to raise $3.6 million and preserve 49 acres. We only have $890,000 left to raise. Help us to:
To donate or for more information about this exciting land-saving opportunity, callMichael Lach, HCT Executive Director, at 508-432-3997 or email him at [email protected].

For their vision and generous support, HCT thanks the Pleasant Bay challenge donorsincluding The John T. Ryan, Jr. Memorial Foundation, Wequassett Resort,
The Friends of Pleasant Bay, and three anonymous families.
Again, every donation to HCT will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $1.8 million!

northern flicker, great-crested flycatcher, oriole, catbird and other birds can beheard in the neighborhood.
These land donations also advanceHCT’s broader Save Land–Save WaterInitiative, which is a long-range planto protect sensitive saltwater andfreshwater resources by strategicallypreserving watershed lands. Thebuildable upland and wetland on someof these parcels eventually drain viagroundwater to Allen Harbor andSaquatucket Harbor on NantucketSound.
One parcel is in the Saquatucket Harborwatershed while the other three are inthe Allen Harbor watershed accordingto the Town’s Draft Wastewater Plan. Bypreserving specific watershed lands, wecan help protect harbor water qualitywhich reduces the cost to taxpayers forfuture wastewater infrastructure. Aninteresting fact is that a 13.7-acre parcelis for sale nearby.
Outright donation, also called feesimple donation, of land to a non-profit land trust is one of the simplestways to protect land. The donor canpotentially receive a federal incometax deduction for the value of the giftagainst 30% of adjusted gross incomefor up to six years. The donor needsan appraisal when the claimed valueof the deduction is more than $5,000.The donor also no longer has to worryabout local property tax or liability.

Donated to HCTTo protect land, water and wildlife, three long-time Cape residents havedonated four forested properties alongSouth Street and Forest Street to thenonprofit Harwich Conservation Trust.Sharon Eberhardt and an anonymousindividual donated two parcels alongSouth Street as well as one on ForestStreet while Pete Peterson donated aparcel off South Street. By preservingthe land, they could benefit from impor-tant tax benefits.
The parcels provide woodland habitatas well as wetland features for a diver-sity of wildlife. The parcels happen tobe located within and/or near rarespecies habitat as mapped by theMassachusetts Natural Heritage andEndangered Species Program. Becauseof the habitat mix, a variety of birdspecies inhabit the area. The calls of
pieces of foam, glass and plastic underan inch long, dog waste, and otherdebris. The waterfront areas includedRed River Beach, Neel Road Beach,Wychmere Harbor, Bank St. Beach,Earle Rd. Beach, Grey Neck Beach,Pleasant Bay Beach at Bay Rd.,Pleasant St. Beach, and Long PondBeach. This effort was part of thestatewide Coastsweep campaign(www.coastsweep.umb.edu), the Com-monwealth’s annual coastal cleanupprogram, organized by the Massa-chusetts Office of Coastal ZoneManagement and the Urban HarborsInstitute at the University ofMassachusetts Boston.
