June 2008CLUB NEWSCLUB NEWS

REMINDER TO ALL MEMBERSLockheed Martin's Workplace Security policy, CPS-565 is strictly enforced. One provision of the policy is a workplace free of weapons, which includes Firearms, Ammunition, Bows and Arrows. The club must emphasize this policy to our members. Additionally, a state issued CCW permit does not supersede nor over ride this LMA policy.Members wanting to store firearms or archery equipment during the day ONLY, must contact Gene Adamson (1-1531) or Dave Mulholland (7-3674) for access instructions.

PRESIDENT’S CORNERFirst and foremost let me take this opportunity to thank the Skyline membership for their continued support of our club. We continue the strong membership renewal results we’ve experienced over the years. That’s a positive sign for our club. I would also like to emphasize that our continued existence as a vibrant and successful club is contingent on our continued and unwavering focus on safety and adherence to the club Range Rules. We’ve reported in prior newsletters and members meetings that LM Corporation is planning a risk audit of club operations this August. We should expect increased attention and scrutiny by LMSSC oversight personnel to ensure we are adhering to the club Range Rules and all Company policies and procedures while using the range and operating the club. Please remember that every Skyline club member is responsible for knowing and following the rules, no exceptions, no excuses. If you haven’t re-read the Range Rules recently, now would be an excellent time to refresh your memory. What is the closest distance I can shoot at steel targets? What is the first thing I do when I arrive at the range? Where are the waiver liability (guests) forms deposited? When you think about it, there are many, many rules to know and follow. We expect all Skyline members (and the guests for whom you are responsible) to always be at your best. This is our club and it’s our responsibility to keep it safe, accessible, fun and educational. Be safe, be Skyline.

PLEASE FOLLOW RANGE RULESIt has been noted by members to the SHFC Board, that personnel were observed cross-firing from the pistol house to the gongs on the hill that belong to the 100-yard range. This is a violation of the Range Rules. Members observing any behavior that they believe violates the Range Rules are encouraged to point the violation out to the offenders, obtain names if possible, and provide that information to the Board for education and corrective action. Alternately, the

Board can obtain access card data and ask the company for surveillance video to determine the parties that need to be spoken to. Additionally, members shooting at the plinking range were found to not have cleaned up their target debris in accordance with the Range Rules specifically designed for the plinking area. Knowledge of and enforcement of Range Rules is every member’s responsibility. Signs will be posted in the pistol house that shooting at the gongs at the 100-yard range is a violation of the Range Rules. A sign will be posted that utilizing "non standard" targets in the plinking range area still requires the shooters to clean up their target area.

RANGE POWER OUTAGEThe range is scheduled to have a power outage from Friday June 13th through Sunday June 15th. The range will remain open but will be limited to daylight hours. All lights, the electrical powered trap and skeet machines will not be operational. We expect the range phones to be operational in case of emergencies. Probably a good idea to bring your cell phone as a backup if you get a signal. Since the electronic swipe gate will not be operational, we will set up a manual sign in sheet by the purchasing shed where the required waivers for guests are deposited. PLEASE REMEMBER TO SIGN IN before commencing to your range. No need to activate the range in use light for this weekend. A sign will be placed by the range in use lights to warn that the range maybe in use.

WISH WARD ANTHONY WELLWe’re saddened to report that our treasurer, Ward Anthony, has fallen seriously ill and is in the hospital. According to his wife BJ, Ward will likely not be able to fulfill his role as treasurer for the club. Gene Adamson will be acting treasure while the board searches for a replacement.

MEET OUR NEW FISHING CHAIRMike Pfeifer is our new Fishing Committee Chair. Here’s a little information about Mike in his own words. I have been with the company since 1980 working in the Quality Assurance area and with the exception of a 13 year assignment at White Sands Missile Range have spent most of that time here at Waterton. A native of Minnesota and an avid Walleye enthusiast; trout and fly fishing are just barely in my vernacular. Wife and I make frequent trips to northern Minnesota and Ontario Canada to pursue the wily Walleye and Northern Pike and have made a number of float plane trips to remote lakes in Ontario. Looking for input from the membership regarding fishing related topics that would be of interest. In the meantime will try to include topics and articles in the monthly newsletter that hopefully will be of interest. Might be fun to try a club fishing contest on one of the local lakes. You can contact Mike Pfeifer at 303-977-6609 or [email protected] .

NEED NEW MEMBERSHIP CHAIRSteve Choromanski, our membership chair for the past year will be taking on a new work assignment that will require significant travel and TDY. He will not be able to continue as the membership chair. The hard part is done for this year. Renewals are completed. We are looking for a replacement to take over for Steve as soon as possible. Please contact Dennis Dal Pra, 303-977-0992 if interested. We would like to thank Steve for his work as membership chair and wish him luck on his new work assignment.

ROCK FALL WARNINGSpring is usually rock fall season. The highest potential for rock fall is the section of road between the Archery Range and the electronic gate. Members have noticed and reported basketball sized rocks on this section of road and you’ve probably noticed recent rock removal activity. Please take caution going to and from the range. Please check the Website and Range Hotline (303-977-7432) for any updates.

PASTURE ROTATION AND RANGE ROAD GATESFrom time to time, the ridge riders will rotate their horses to different pastures on the LM property. Some of these rotations will require pasture gates along the range road be kept closed. Last month, the Ridge Riders rotated their horses into pasture #14. This required closing the gates pass the Archery pavilion and at the top of the incline before the electronic gate. The horses are now in pasture 15N and the pasture gates on the range road are open. Please pay attention to the sign on the pasture gates and close them when required. Here’s a schedule of planned pasture rotations:

-Move to pasture 15S June 28th

-Move to pasture 13N July 19th

Pasture Map.

3

The move to pasture 15 north and south should not impact range road gates. You will be notified of future rotations that affect the range road via email notification, this newsletter and the club website. Due to weather and other reasons, the planned pasture rotations may change. Please follow the range road pasture gate instructions. Thank you.

As a reminder here is excerpt from the Safety and Range Rules regarding pasture gates:"3. If the horses are in a pasture controlled by a gate in question, that gate should be closed and secured at all times unless there are other controls in place preventing horses from escaping. The horse club may post an occupancy sign to help.4. If there is a sign on a gate requesting that it be closed, the gate should be closed after passing through it regardless of the state in which the gate was found."

NEW CLUB POLICIES IN EFFECT

RELEASE OF LIABILITYOne new policy is the Release of Liability that must be signed and submitted by the member prior to obtaining their Range Access badge for the year. This release is intended to protect club assets, officers, and volunteers. Primary members, i.e., the LM/ULA employee or retiree in whose name the SHFC membership is in, will sign the release annually for himself and any minor children (under 18 years of age). All others, family members or not, will sign each time they visit the range. Put another way, guests must sign a release each and every time they visit the range. This is because the easiest way to ensure that we have a release signed for a guest is to have guests sign a release each visit. It obviates the need for tracking who has, or has not, signed a release, and if the release is current, etc.

Committee or group leaders, e.g., the Youth Shooting Sports committee chairman, will be required to obtain waivers signed adult guests and by the parents of any minor children participating in range activities.

Waivers will be available at each range, and signed waivers will need to be deposited in the mail box at the purchasing shed. There is a Guest Releases of Liability form at the end of this newsletter. The release can also be found by visiting the club website, http://gvtg.com/skyline/ , and clicking the Membership tab.

EMPTY CHAMBER INDICATORSMost members are aware by now that Empty Chamber Indicators (ECIs) are required for firearms at the range.  This requirement has been included in our recently revised Range Rules. ECIs were previously known as Open Bolt Indicators (OBIs). These ECI’s MUST be placed in your firearm BEFORE your firearm is removed from your vehicle. NO EXCEPTION*. ALL firearms shall be carried from a vehicle to a specific range/shooting station with an ECI in place. NOTE that if there are members at that range, NO HANDLING of FIREARMS at ANY TIME when persons are down range and your firearm should be placed in the rack or left in the case WITH the ECI in place. Members not following the Range Rules are subject to disciplinary action, including dismissal from the club!! *(black powder, shotgun -single/double/O/U excepted, the shotguns should be broken open, black powder should be unloaded with NO cap in place)

To encourage use of ECIs and attendance at club meetings and events, SHFC will provide free ECIs to members attending club meetings and events while supplies last.

STATUS OF CLUB FFLOur purchasing team has finalized the club’s purchasing process document and we are finalizing arrangements for the new FFL premises. We hope to announce the new arrangements very soon.

ELECTRONIC GATEPer the SHFC Range Rules, each club member is required to "wand" their electronic gate card at the electronic gate for accountability. This will also reset the arms timer so it doesn’t come down on your vehicle. Upon leaving the range, each person should push the gate open button so the arms timer is reset so it doesn’t come down on your vehicle on the way out.

ALTERNATIVE TO ELECTRONIC GATEAs a result of further instances where the electronic gate has been damaged, the club will use the manual gate that is located just past the electric one (in bound) as a backup. The combination lock on that gate will be the same as the former SHFC lock on the front gate (The number on your badge). The club member is still required to "wand" their electronic gate card at the electronic gate for accountability. Signs are being placed that will Caution personnel approaching the gate(s). The first one to the range opens the gate, the last one out locks the gate.

Colorado prairie dog hunting ban defeated. Thanks to calls and attendance at last months meeting of the  Colorado Wildlife Commission in Grand Junction, a proposed ban on prairie dog hunting was defeated by a 9 - 0 vote.

Wal-Mart to videotape gun buyers. In the future Firearm purchases at Wal-Mart will involve a video record of the sale, which the store will keep on file as a database of gun buyers. The NRA is urging hunters and shooters to contact Wal-Mart to show displeasure with this action. Wal-Mart can be reached at 800-925-6278, or www.walmartstores.com/contactus/feedback.aspx. Also, I would suggest taking the time to contact a manager at your local Wal-Mart, and voicing your displeasure. Please take the time to get involved, it only takes a few minutes of your time, and you will feel sooo... much better getting in someone's face. The theme of this last sentence will be a continuing comment in my articles, please take a few minutes a month, get involved, after all it's your 2nd Amendment rights we are talking about!

The  Obama corner. You will notice over the next few months, my great love, and respect for our anti-gun candidate obama. Last month in Oregon, he redrew the map of the United States: "Over the last 15 months, we've traveled to every corner of the United States. I've now been in 57 states? I think one left to go."

ARCHERY 2008Archery game management hunt on LMSSC property for 2008 has been approved. The mandatory safety / security briefings will be scheduled for July and August.

There will be a few changes from past years.

-Certain areas open in the past on the west side of the property & including the test stands on PJKS will be off limits due to a new program testing requirements. The boundaries and final approval letter have been coordinated with Chuck Kocher. Copies of the new boundaries will be distributed at the annual safety/security briefing in July & August and is available on the SHFC homepage. If you have any questions, please call Mitch Arnold for more detail.

-The definition of immediate family has been changed to include spouse, child, grandchild, parent, and sibling. No in laws, nephews, uncles, etc will be allowed. This was approved by the SHFC board and concurred with by HR.

-Only personnel who are SHFC members in good standing effective April 1 2008 will be allowed to archery hunt the LMSSC property during the 2008 season - this was approved by SHFC Board and concurred with by HR.

-Anyone wanting to archery hunt the 2008 season must complete 4 hrs of 2008 work bond (any committee type) (Guests are exempt from this requirement) prior to obtaining a 2008 permit - this was approved by SHFC Board.

All other requirements remain the same

8

-Must attend the safety/security briefing

-SHFC members or immediate family

-Be in possession of a valid DOW license

-etc

At a recent Board meeting, a proposal was made to the SHFC Board that all personnel wanting to participate in the archery game management hunts be required to have an archery hunter education safety card. The Board approved this proposal. The class (2 remaining this year in June & July) will be offered for no charge to SHFC members in 2008. It is not required for the 2008 seasons. However, it will be required for the 2009 seasons if Lockheed Martin management approves the game management hunts for 2009.

PRACTICAL PISTOL LITEPractical Pistol Lite has started and we will continue on every other Monday. In June, we’ll shoot on the 9th and the 23rd. The theme has changed to address more personal protection and actual defensive shooting and less timed shooting. If you want to see how fast you can shoot a course, this is not the activity for you. Make sure to bring your semi-auto pistol (9mm up to 45 cal), holster, 3 magazines, mag holster and at least 50 rounds. Plus we will include a stage for the tactical shotgun, and will explore having a tactical rifle stage occasionally. Starting time will be 5:00 pm at the Pistol House and continue on for about 2 hours. New safety rules will be addressed at the first and all activities. Call Dave Norris (303-932-4822)

PRACTICAL PISTOL - LADIES ONLYEvery other Monday, we hold a LADIES ONLY practical pistol shooting activity.  In June, we’ll shoot on the 2nd, 16th and the 30th and then every other Monday in July and August. Ladies, you can bring a pistol from a .22 cal to a .45 cal, revolver or semi-auto.  If your significant other attends, he cannot say a word to you, only watch with mouth closed.  If he says anything, he goes to the other range.  This is for the LADIES ONLY.  We have plenty of certified instructors for your assistance.  Last year was way too much fun, so this year should be even better.  You will need a holster, at least 2 speed loaders for a revolver, at least 2 mags (better with 3 mags) for a semi-auto.  Dress code: flat soled low heel shoes/boots, remove any dangling jewelry, excess rings, bracelets, etc., wear loose clothing, dress in layers due to weather changes.  Bring eye and ear protection. New safety rules will be addressed at all activities.  Call Tom Frickell (303-971-5493).

STEEL CHALLENGE - .22 Cal Pistols OnlyThe .22 caliber pistol match is scheduled for Sat. June 7th from 9 am to 2 pm at the pistol house and 100 yard plinking range.  Any .22 cal pistol will be allowed. Any type of sights will be allowed. There will be only two categories: Open and Ladies Only, so ladies you can compete with everyone or just against the other ladies, your choice. You will need a holster or a gun case to keep your pistol in during non-shooting time. Bring at least two mags, but 3 is optimal. Please bring at least 150 rounds of ammo. There will be eight stages with 5 steel targets at each stage. You get to pick the sequence of how to shoot each target once, with one designated stop plate as the last target in the sequence. Age requirements are 16 years or older, unless one has permission from one of the club’s NRA instructors AND has a Hunter Ed card or a Firearms Safety card with them or has taken the NRA Basic Pistol class and has the certificate with them. If you plan to attend, please call Tom Frickell (303-971-5493).

PRACTICAL PISTOLThe 2008 Wednesday Night Practical Pistol season is up and running with more fun and challenging stages and new steel we just received. Setup starts at 4:45 pm and shooting starts at 5:00 pm after the safety orientation. Our Wednesday night shoots are informal USPSA/IPSC/IDPA type stages. The game is accuracy and speed and we emphasize safety and fun. On the 3rd Wednesdays of the month, we have a tactical shotgun stage along with the pistol. Call Mike Sullivan (303-977-3478).

11

SUMMER 3-GUNGet ready, the first 2008 Summer 3-Gun is scheduled for June 21st. Summer 3-Gun will normally be held on the 3rd Saturday of each month and go through October. Start time will be at 3:30 pm with setup starting at 3:00 pm. For those new to 3-gun, it is similar to our Wednesday night practical pistol except we shoot the pistol, shotgun and semi-auto carbine/rifle for a combination of accuracy and speed. Since the Summer 3-Gun runs concurrent to practical pistol, we’ll have a heavier emphasis on the rifle and shotgun. Typical ammo requirement is roughly 25 rounds of pistol, 50 rounds of rifle, 25 rounds of shotgun (mostly birdshot and occasionally 5 rounds of slug and buckshot) if you don’t miss. Contact Walter Tang at 303-977-6474 or email [email protected] to get on the mailing list. I usually send out the stage description before the shoot so you’ll know how much ammo to bring.

HIGH POWERApril/May High Power Results & NewsThe 2008 Colorado High Power schedule is posted on the SHFC website, and there are many opportunities to compete in High Power (Service Rifle and Match Rifle) as well as Garand matches, “Any/Any” matches, full-bore, etc.

High Power matches are conducted every off-Friday, finishing by noon or 1 PM. We welcome all types of high power service or match rifles; some choose to shoot the Garand or M1A but the AR15 is the choice of most. The club has two AR15s, a Garand, two shooting mats, and a spotting scope with stand which are available to use during matches.

Vintage Service Rifle MatchTen competitors showed up for the 16 May 2008 “Vintage” match. The weather started out overcast and cold but with no rain and progressed to pleasant and WINDY. Richard Hughes used Skyline’s (loaner) Garand borrowing enough .30-06 to shoot the match. Richard took 2nd place with that rifle indicating it can hold its own in our competitions. The next Vintage match is tentatively planned for July 25th. Contact Corey Kroll to reserve the club Garand.

FISHINGZEBRA MUSSEL ISSUEColorado State Parks board members approved a statewide mandatory boat inspection program to protect Colorado waters from aquatic invasive species (AIS), including the zebra mussels,

14

which was discovered at Lake Pueblo. Zebra mussels are a non-native invasive mollusk that is harmful to the environment, and park officials are taking steps necessary to try to contain their spread. While they pose no health risk, Zebra Mussels can cause severe damage to water systems, boating equipment and the ecosystem. Zebra Mussel infestations in Midwest waters have caused billions of dollars in damage.

All boats including motors, trailers and related equipment will be subjected to inspections for any non-native or exotic plant material and aquatic wildlife identified as AIS prior to launch or departure from state park waters. Boats may be denied access or placed under quarantine if inspection is refused or if AIS are found on or within a boat or boating equipment.

The inspections have begun at Lake Pueblo and are expanding this spring to four other parks that have been identified as high risk for transport of AIS: Navajo, Cherry Creek, Chatfield and John Martin State Parks.

The inspections are necessary since AIS are primarily transported over land to other bodies of water by hitchhiking on recreational vehicles, including boats, kayaks, sailboats, jet skis, boat trailers and waders. AIS or aquatic nuisance species are non-native, invasive plants and animals that have been introduced to new habitats outside of their native range. Unchecked these organisms will quickly spread and out compete native species.

Aquatic nuisance species have no effective predators and have detrimental impacts on the environment, recreation, water quality and water transport. Several other aquatic nuisance species have reached Colorado, including the New Zealand mud snail and water weeds.

All boaters are encouraged to follow these practices to help prevent the spread of AIS:

Before leaving any body of water, boaters should:• DRAIN the water from the boat, live well and the lower unit of the engine• CLEAN the hull of the boat.• DRY the boat, fishing gear, and equipment.• INSPECT all exposed surfaces• REMOVE all plant and animal material.

Colorado State Parks is finalizing a Rapid Response Plan for the zebra mussels at Lake Pueblo and have been part of a statewide AIS partnership since 2004 working with municipalities throughout the state to prevent further spread. As part of this statewide effort, Aurora Parks and Open Space staff have implemented the following measures at Aurora and Quincy Reservoirs:

• Owners and operators of ALL watercraft, including belly boats, kayaks and sailboats will be interviewed by an Aurora Park Ranger before they will be allowed to launch their watercraft.

• Fishermen who plan to use waders will also be interviewed. • All watercraft must be launched from the designated boat launch area, and only after

speaking with a Ranger. • Parks staff will want to know if the watercraft has been on other reservoirs or lakes.• If necessary, the Ranger will complete a thorough inspection of the watercraft or fishing

equipment to determine if any Zebra Mussels are present.• Depending on the results of the interview or the inspection, Park Rangers can deny access

to the water if they believe the watercraft is considered high risk.
