Goodbye Delores (censored by HR)

Delores first arrived at GW with her white hat and nurse’s uniform in 1981 it took her

only 6 years to advance to the next position of Nurse Administrator for the Department

of Medicine. Then a short 5 years later she got rid of the Department Administrator and

combined the two jobs.

How do I describe the relationship between Delores and me? Tense, Contentious, Com-

petitive, Argumentative, but I had the better comebacks. She would just curse at me

when things got really heated but being a student of the old SNL shows my best line with

a small variation went something like “Delores, you ” Of course I would

never say this today. What I would say would be “ ”

I always thought that people didn’t appreciate what Delores did. I may have been some-

what responsible for this since if things went well I would take credit and if they didn’t

my line would be ‘you better see Delores’.

How much work did she have to do anyway? We are only a Department with $162 mil-

lion in charges, with 180 faculty and 300 staff, with 4 floors of clinics at 2150 and an

additional 2 at M St. We have 105 Interns and Residents as well as 75 or so fellows.

She is responsible for the Finances, the Administration and the Clinical operation of this

large department. And just for good measure, this year we added UMC to her portfolio

to keep her from being bored.

She has fought with every Division Director (maybe except Malakoff), every Program

Director and Clerkship Director and most of the faculty, because she is the one who has

to say NO. If it was up to me I would let people do whatever they want but I’m the good

guy.

How do I end this? It isn’t easy after spending 20 years with someone and since she is

going to Mississippi there is no chance of me visiting.

Thank you. On behalf of the Department and the MFA, Thank you, Delores! Thank you

for making my life a living hell and at the same time making me and our Department a

success. Whether anyone else knows, I know what she has done and I am in awe most

every day.

It is hard to believe that I will be coming into work and she won’t be there as she has

been for the last 20 years. I think it will take a while to get accustomed to not seeing her

there.

I will miss her, in a very strange way. She will always have my respect and admiration.

And of course I wish her all the best as long

as she didn’t leave anything undone.
