About the Whidbey Gardening Workshop !

The 31st Annual Whidbey Gardening Workshop provides gardening advice and education in gardening practices to gardeners from beginner to advanced in Island County and the greater Puget Sound region. The Workshop is produced and presented by the Island County Master Gardener Foundation which supports the Master Gardener Program to provide public education in gardening and environmental stewardship based on research at Washington State University and other university systems. The Master Gardener Program is a program of WSU Extension.

Registration Information!Registration opens on January 13, 2019 and closes on February 24. Register early to get your first choice classes. Tickets are $45 in advance and include 3 classes and Keynote. Also available is a Lunch for advance purchase, as well as special rates at four Oak Harbor hotels. Tickets at the door are $50. You are officially registered when your Registration form and fee are received. You will receive a confirmed registration email/phone call. Registration forms are also accepted in person at the WSU Extension office in Coupeville. Refund requests must be received by February 24. A1 25 Tips to Make You a Better Gardener You may be new to gardening in the Pacific Northwest or an experienced, long-time resident, but there might be tips and skills that can increase your success. Our gardens are always evolving and changing, as well as our interests, needs and abilities. Here are some ideas that will help you be a better, smarter gardener. Diana Wisen has lived in the Puget Sound area all of her life, became a WSU Master Gardener in 1991 and has been a MG trainer, Speakers Bureau chairman and educational outreach instructor much of that time.A2 Wresting with Weeds - ID and Management NEW What weeds do I have in my yard and how can I effectively get rid of them? In this class we will explore our most prevalent invaders and provides hands on experiences with tools and techniques for management of specific invasive species. Seth Luginbill is the Noxious Weed Program Coordinator for the Island County Noxious Weed Control Board and has a background in botany and natural resource management. A3 Creating Captivating Gardens– Learn how to create a sense of mystery and intrigue in your garden using light, movement, portals and much more. Using examples gleaned from her recent coast to coast travels, noted designer, teacher and author Karen Chapman will offer a plethora of ideas for injecting a little magic into your own personal landscape Karen Chapman is a landscape designer, national design consultant, experienced television and radio guest, author, and popular speaker at International Flower and Garden Shows, nurseries and garden clubs.A4 Landscape Design: Where Do I Begin? NEW Sometimes it can be so hard to know where to begin with the design of your landscape. This workshop will cover some basic principles of design that have proven successful, and guide you to apply these principles to everyday small and large landscape design projects. Frank Simpson is Executive Director and Garden Manager at Meerkerk Gardens. He holds a Master's degree in Landscape Architecture and has over 40 years of experience as a landscape professional and instructor. A5 Water Features in Landscape Design From waterfalls to birdbaths to fishponds, each choice brings technical demands that can frustrate and overwhelm the beginning aquatic gardener. Beginning with a survey of the aesthetics of water features in gardens: sight, sound and smell, we’ll explore fish and plant options and care as well as resources for questions and problems that arise. We’ll also begin to explore the technical specs necessary to achieve a satisfying harvest of all that water can bring to the garden. Sam Mitchell’s entree to water gardens began when he moved to a house with a pond. Soon enough the aquatic plant palette grew limited and he branched out to terrestrial horticulture. A6 Ornamental Grasses and Bamboo NEW Grasses and bamboos are often misunderstood garden components, but George Lasch will show you how beautiful and useful they can be in our region. Connecting people and plants drives George Lasch to find and critique plants and gardens with his humor and opinion. Teaching at Edmonds CC and helping clients achieve their best gardens keeps him busy.A7 Slow Flowers Centerpieces: Floral Designs From the Garden NEW This floral design demonstration is for the home floral designer! You’ll learn about the Slow Flowers movement and go away with lots of ideas, inspiration and a few floral design tricks! Learn all sorts of tips and info about what to cut from the garden and to condition it for use; basic principles of design; ideas for plants to incorporate into your garden for cutting. Tobey Nelson has a BS in Landscape Horticulture and over 20 years designing, installing and maintaining gardens. Tobey Nelson Events and Design offers garden design and coaching, floral design for special occasions, weddings and wedding planning. A8 How to Select, Grow and Prune Clematis - The Queen of the Vines NEW Whether you have one clematis or a dozen, you can always introduce one more into your garden! Learn about different types of clematis based on bloom time and vigor and how they can be used as companion plants; plus tips on planting growth, pruning and training. Marilyn Glenn is a WSU trained Master Gardener, and with her husband has a four-season ornamental garden which was featured by the Whatcom Horticultural Society in 2017.

A9 Sowing Diversity: Gardening and Land Management for Native Pollinators NEW Pollinators are essential to both our food supply and to the perpetuation of natural ecosystems. Unfortunately, pollinators face significant threats. This talk will introduce native bee ecology and the habitat systems that can support them, and how to access additional resources to support pollinator conservation. Eric Lee-Mader co-directs the Pollinator Conservation program at the Xerces Society, collaborating with government agencies, international organizations, food companies and farmers to protect wildlife habitat on farms. His work has been featured in the major media and he is the author of several books on attracting native pollinators.A10 Healing and Tending “Wet Lands” NEW Land in the Pacific NW always must relate to water, whether rain or runoff or wetlands, tidelands or old creek and stream beds. If in the past such ‘water features’ were too often suppressed or deemed unsightly, today we recognize water as an incredibly valuable common resource. Scott Freeman is a lecturer at the University of Washington. His book, Saving Tarboo Creek, tells an inspiring story of community conservation and renewal. A11 Firewise Whidbey Style: Living with Wildfire in our Unique Bioregion NEW Whidbey’s unique wildfire regime has sculpted this landscape like all its other natural processes. The next time wildfire happens here, will you be prepared? Ideas on how you can adapt your landscape to living with wildfire Whidbey style, while meeting your other conservation and land use goals. Kelsi Mottet is a fifth generation Whidbey Island native who holds a deeply embedded passion of this place. She is the Marketing. Education and Outreach Coordinator for the Whidbey Island Conservation District. A12 The Lost Art of Seed Saving NEW This class will provide an introduction to seed saving on common vegetables and cover a wide range of botanic concepts and practical techniques, including pollination, space and equipment needs, plant physiology, patents and much more. Nathaniel Talbot and his wife Annie Jespersen run Deep Harvest Farm a certified organic vegetable, seed and flower operation in Freeland, WA. Deep Harvest Seeds sells over 100 varieties of organic open-pollinated vegetable and flower seeds through regional seed racks and online store.A13 Planning a Low Maintenance Kitchen Garden It’s all about growing good food. Finding a good site, preparing the soil, using raised beds, (cool season/warm season) timing on plantings, crop rotations and year-round gardens. Anza Muenchow has been enjoying growing food at her Maha Farm in Clinton, WA for the past 15 years. She is also passionate about improving fresh food access for her community and especially for low income families. A14 Beyond Jam: New and Creative Ways for Preserving Fruit NEW The Northwest produces wonderful fruit, and it’s not hard to preserve it, but how much jam can one person eat? Join food and garden writer Tara Austen Weaver to learn three new methods to preserve your garden berries and fruit for the winter months. Tara Austen Weaver’s books include Growing Berries and Fruit Trees in the Pacific Northwest and Orchard House: How a Neglected Garden Taught One Family to Grow. A15 It’s the Berries and More Learn about the production of small fruit crops in the home garden, including strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, kiwi and grapes. Topics covered will include cultivars, general production practices, and pest identification and management. Jim Kropf is the Natural Resources Program Director and the Director of County Administration for WSU Extension and has been an Extension agronomist in eastern WA and horticulturalist in western WA during his career with WSU. Jim grew up on a small berry farm in Puyallup. A16 Secrets of Vegetable Companion Planting NEW Did you know that some plants grow better together? Improve the health and productivity of your vegetable garden by choosing plants that work together as companions, rather than compete for resources. Carey Thornton teaches classes and workshops as part of Tilth Alliance's Community Education team on topics including organic gardening, composting, food preservation and permaculture.

Winter here can be dark, wet, gray and dreary, but because of our climate, we can also choose from a large number of plants that provide rich color and eye-catching foliage and bark. Marsha Goller is a Master Gardener and coordinates the Four Seasons Garden at the Skagit County Master Gardener Discovery Garden. B2 Rain Gardens for the Pacific Northwest NEW This class will discuss what rain gardens are, why would someone build one, how to assess the site and feasibility, design to create a facility, how to maintain it and how to spot and correct common mistakes. Zsofia Pasztor is founder and co -executive director of Farmer Frog. She teaches restoration horticulture, urban agriculture, aquaponics and low impact development and trains professionals about natural resource conservation.B3 Pruning Basics In this class you will learn how to improve your pruning results through matching plant growth characteristics and pruning objectives with the right tools, pruning cuts and timing. Christina Pfeiffer is a horticulture consultant and educator with over 35 years experience in landscape horticulture. She is an ISA Certified Arborist and co-author of Pacific Northwest Month-by-Month Gardening.B4 Drip Irrigation - Design, Installation and Maintenance NEW Take the work out of watering. Learn how to set up your own drip irrigation system, good for garden beds, deck plants, greenhouses, orchards and row crops. Bob Bryan followed two career paths, first in neurochemistry and then in biotechnology. He has been a Skagit County Master Gardener since 2009B5 Foliage and Focal Points: Ideas for Gardens and Budgets of All Sizes -The the importance of establishing focal points, a key component of good garden design, and analyze three areas where they will play an important role. Explore the use of containers, structures, water features and sculptural elements as focal points and discuss how to frame and enhance these with interesting foliage to create a memorable vignette. With ideas for budgets and gardens of all sizes, quickly gain the confidence and knowledge to transform your own landscape into a cohesive series of eye-catching scenes. Karen Chapman is a landscape designer, national design consultant, experienced television and radio guest, author, and popular speaker at International Flower and Garden Shows, nurseries and garden clubs.B6 The Fragrant Garden Gardens should appeal to all senses. A garden with seductive fragrance would be a place of love and romance. Nurseryman, plant collector, and landscape designer Everett Chu will offer a show and tell session on the use of many plants for all-season enjoyments. Everett Chu is a certified professional horticulturist and ecoPRO sustainable landscape professional. He is the owner and landscape designer/builder of Azusa Farm and Gardens in Mount Vernon, a WSU Skagit County Master Gardener and NW Flower and Garden Show garden creator. B7 Garden Renovation-What to Keep, What to Add NEW In this class we will discuss approaches to changes in the landscape, options on how to decode and accomplish them. Lists of plants for difficult situations will be provided. Pat Roome is a Master Gardener and landscape designer, specializing in consulting with homeowners and making suggestions for changes and how they can be accomplished.B8 Pots with Pizazz Take your container garden game to the next level! Get insights on the attributes to consider when selecting a container… and learn design principles, plant selections and pick up loads of tips - even about soil science - to give your container gardens the very best foundation for success! Tobey Nelson is an official plant-a-holic, with a BS in Landscape Horticulture. She is the owner of Tobey Nelson Events and Designs LLC. B9 Hydrangeas Demystified NEW Hydrangeas, the garden stalwarts, are continuing a renaissance across the globe. Join George Lasch for his opinions and humor as he discusses the main type and how to get the most out of them through pruning and maintenance. Connecting people and plants drive George Lasch to find and critique plants and gardens with his humor and opinion. Learn more about alpine plants, what makes them unique and how to feature and grow them in your garden for color and interest at varying times of the year. Jumanji Moritz has been a professional garden designer for over 10 years, is owner of Rainy Day Flora, a natives nursery in Langley WA., B11 Converting Your Lawn to a Prairie to Benefit Suburban Wildlife NEW Learn how to use native plants and convert part of your lawn or your small field to a more diverse habitat for pollinators and other wildlife! Dr. Pelant will share techniques, rationale and challenges in land preparation, obtaining seed or plants, choosing which plants to use, planting/seeding techniques and timing, as well as various challenges that Mother Nature may throw your way. Dr. Robert K. Pelant is the founding director of the Pacific Rim Institute. He spent 30 years in sustainable food production and habitat restoration in Asia, Latin America and Africa.B12 Practical Permaculture - Home Garden Applications NEW In this class we will look at putting permaculture concepts into practice, with real world examples that you can apply to your own garden. Learn how to use select plants and techniques to help your garden thrive. Eric Conn is a farmer, consultant and designer. He has been the co-owner of Full Cycle Farm in Clinton, WA for ten years, growing a wide range of vegetables, herbs and flowers.B13 Foraging for Edibles, Medicinals, Herbals and Teas NEW Learn about some common and easy to identify plants that you can harvest for food or medicine. Many plants thought of as weeds can be tastier and more nutritious than the cultivated plants growing in our gardens. Carey Thornton teaches classes and workshops as part of Tilth Alliance's Community Education team on topics including organic gardening, composting, food preservation and permaculture.B14 Choosing and Managing Soil in Raised Bed Gardens NEW In this class we will discuss the pros and cons of raised bed gardens, and selecting and managing raised bed soils to reduce problems with infiltration, drainage and fertility. Craig Cogger was an Extension Soil Scientist at WSU from 1984-2015 and has taught Master Gardener soils classes for over 30 years. His research focused on agricultural use of organic soil amendments.B15 Growing Tomatoes in the Pacific NW: Tips, Tricks, and Trials Learn the basics about how to grow great tomatoes in our challenging Pacific NW climate. Class will cover everything from seed to harvest and will include the latest varieties and trends. Marcia Dillon has been a Master Gardener since 2012. She manages the tomatoes at the Bellevue Demonstration Garden, where they trial the latest varieties in a quest to find the perfect tomato.B16 Basic Fruit Care and Maintenance NEW Whether planting a new tree or rehabbing one you have inherited on your property, this class will go over the basics - why and what variety to choose for where you live, tips on when and how to grow, prune and maintain for optimal production. Dave Thomas has over 60 years of gardening experience and has taught popular classes on successful vegetable growing, fruit tree care and more. He has been the “field boss’ of the Lord’s Garden for over 21 years, providing fresh vegetables and fruits for those in need in Oak Harbor and Coupeville. He is an Island County Master Gardener.

C1 Mulch and Mulching: Background, Benefits and Best Practices NEW Local landscape architect Ian Horton will describe the basics of mulch and mulching for the home gardener. This talk will review background, benefits and methods of mulch applications as well as comparison of locally available mulch types and their respective advantages. Ian Horton is a licensed landscape architect based in Skagit County. He studied at the University of Washington and the University of Virginia.C2 Gardening on a Bluff Site NEW This class will discuss challenges of steep slopes and bluffs in general and more specifically, in the Pacific NW. What practices can help prevent failures or stabilize unstable areas, how to notice some of the most common signs of failures and who are the professionals (field of expertise) able to help assess and/or design and implement solutions. Zsophia Pasztor is founder and a co-executive director of nonprofit, Farmer Frog. She teaches restoration horticulture, urban agriculture, aquaponics and low impact development and trains professionals about sustainable site management, integrated agriculture, community development and natural resource conservation.C3 Advanced Pruning Techniques In this class you will learn how to correct past pruning mistakes, renovation pruning, structural pruning for young trees and large shrubs, and pruning tips for flowering shrubs and vines. Ellon Jarvis has been a King County Master Gardener since 1993, schedules workshops for the Bellevue Demonstration Garden, and gardens at a home surrounded by large conifers and big leaf maples, with many types of shade.C5 Small Space Gardening — Where there’s a Will There’s a Way  Gardening space seems to be getting smaller and smaller, compared to yards of days gone by. Whether you have a porch, patio or small yard space.
