Invest in your workforce Growing Workforces through Learning and Development (GWLAD) is an exciting and innovative project that offers up to 70% subsidised costs for self-employed, micro, small, medium and large third and private sector organisations across Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire and Swansea. The Wales Institute for Work-based Learning (WIWBL) leads on the project, which has been supported by the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government.

Innovation:

This innovative project enables learners to study modules in a variety of topics, which can contribute towards a qualification in Professional Practice such as:

• Human Resources• Leadership • Marketing • Mentoring and Coaching • Mindfulness• Project Management• Sustainability • Recognition and Accreditation of Learning and much more

All modules require the learner to undertake reflection to improve their professional practice and impact on the workplace, benefiting the business and consequently the Welsh economy. We are continuously seeking to develop new modules and can work with organisations to create bespoke programmes to meet their needs.

Flexible work-based learning:

A great degree of flexibility is offered by the GWLAD project for both the learner and organisation. Learners can study various pathways from just one module to Certificate in Higher Education at Level 4 or a Master’s at Level 7. Additional flexibility is offered with the unique bilingual provision providing learners with the opportunity to learn and submit work through the medium of Welsh or English. Our lecturers bring a wealth of industry experience and skills, and our mentor lecturers will support learners through their journey to ensure their learning is maximised.

Developing Leadership SkillsCredits: 30 Level: 4 / 7 Duration - 4 days, taught sessions

Introduction:

This module focuses on encouraging participants to examine a range of different leadership styles, behaviours and traits from theory and apply to practice.

The following areas will be covered during the module:

• Introduction to the functions of leadership within organisations, including exploring research findings and the resulting impact for the workplace

• A range of theories in the context of leadership forms and styles, and their implications for effective leadership within the workplace

• Various aspects of organisational culture in the context of leadership and examine how ethical considerations impact upon the role of the leader

For whom?

This course is particularly suited to those in a position of management or leadership within their organisation as well as those aspiring to becoming manager or leaders of the future.

Benefits:

This module has a strong focus on the development and practical application of leadership skills link with the overall aims and objectives of the organisation, and ensuring that employees understand how their personal objectives fit into the overarching business strategy. Learners will develop the following skills:

Human Resources for non HR Professionals

Credits: 30 Level: 4 Duration - 3 days, taught sessions

Introduction:

Increasing numbers of organisations are devolving Human Resource management responsibilities, such as recruitment, performance management, discipline and grievance to line managers.

The following areas will be covered during the module:

• The functions and activities of HR Fundamentals including employment, legislation and general good practice

• The role of line mangers in implementing HR processes• Personal strengths and areas for development related to the HR function• Recruitment and selection activities, including policies, processes, and job descriptions, as well as the variety

of approaches to recruitment interviews• Performance management, including the benefits of a system which is fit for purpose for your own

organisation• Discipline and grievance situations by understanding how following procedures step-by-step can help lead

to a fair and safe outcome

For whom?

All employees that want a fuller understanding of the function of HR, especially those that manage others.

Benefits:

• This module should result in improved performance for your organisation, and help to ensure compliance with legislation.

Introduction to Marketing Credits: 30 Level: 4 Duration – 3 days, taught sessions

Introduction:

This module is designed to give learners a basic understanding of the theory and concepts underpinning marketing and to give them an insight into marketing principles and practice.

This module focusses on the following areas:

• The consumer market and the major factors that influence consumer buyer behaviour;• The main environmental factors determining markets and marketing; • The steps in the marketing research process; • The development of an organisation’s marketing mix;• The basis of an organisation’s marketing strategy;• Tools and techniques used in conducting market research;

Individuals who want enhance and develop their marketing knowledge and skills

Benefits:

Managing Teams Credits: 30 Level: 4 / 5 Duration - 3 days, taught sessionsIntroduction:This Managing Teams module is designed to provide you with the information and tools you need to improve your skills within your workplace. By the end of this module, you will have a broad understanding of different theoretical and practical approaches to managing a team, and considered your own role and responsibilities, styles and approaches.

The focus within this module is:

• Establish what makes an effective team• Team working, team roles and responsibilities • Managing individual and team performance• Theories in the field of high performance teams, motivation and performance management• Handling conflict in organisations• Communication skills

For whom? This course is particularly suited to those in a position of management or leadership within their organisation as well as those aspiring to becoming manager or leaders of the future.

Mentoring and Coaching in the workplace

Credits: 30 Level: 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 Duration - 3 days, taught sessionsIntroduction:

Our Mentoring and Coaching in the Workplace module provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills to coach and mentor effectively, creating a more flexible approach to addressing the fast-moving requirements of today’s workplace. By the end of this module, learners will have demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the principles of effective work-based coaching and mentoring. They will also:

• Have an understanding of coaching theory and sound principles of coaching practice• Know how people learn and the key issues associated with coaching in the workplace• Understand coaching models, styles, tools and techniques • Learn the benefits of coaching and mentoring to the organisation and individuals• Reflect on own performance and produce a development plan

For whom?

This module is relevant to any experienced member of the organisation in particular those who are currently informally mentoring or coaching others and/or would like to implement this process into their organisation.

Benefits:

• Coaching and mentoring can boost business by developing existing staff and attracting new talent.• This can easily be woven into the organisational culture to improve communication, performance and

Mindfulness in the Workplace

Credits: 30 Level: 4 / 7 Duration – 4 days, taught sessions

Introduction:

This module takes the research surrounding the Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy courses, together with key mindfulness practices and asks the student to consider these in relation to their own place of work.

This module includes:

• Introduction to mindfulness, including exploring research findings and the resulting impact for the workplace, whilst carrying out short mindfulness practices.

• Explore how a mindfulness-based approach can help improve problematic issues within your workplace• Explore research related to how mindfulness practice affects the parts of our brain which are linked to

empathy, and consider how this can be beneficial in a work situation• Develop a level of personal practice that will be more effective for everyday life For whom?

Having this extended mindful approach focuses the mind on the task in hand which in turn:

• Increases productivity• Enhances self-awareness and self-regulation• Reduces stress

Project Management

Credits: 30 Level: 4 / 5 / 7 Duration – 4 days, taught sessions

Introduction:

Through this module, you will be able to recognise and describe the benefits of project management, explain the principles and identify appropriate tools and techniques to effectively manage projects.

This module focuses the following areas of Project Management theory and practice:

• The principles of project management• Tools and techniques for planning and managing projects• Risk: identification, analysis and management• Quality management in a project environment• Project monitoring, reporting and budget control• Level 7 will encourage learners to develop a project management methodology that suits their workplace

For whom?

This module is relevant to anyone that is managing or working on a project within their workplace.

Benefits:

• Some benefits of utilising a project management approach are; increasing efficiency and effectiveness of delivering services increase in quality of services and increased risk assessment.

• By implementing a project management approach to a project, it provides a ‘roadmap’ that can be easily followed by all parties involved.

Assessment:

• Levels 4 and 5: Assignment illustrating how project management could benefit your place of work.• Level 7: Assignment discussing project management processes with recommendations for a suitable

methodology in the workplace.

Recognition and Accreditation of Learning (RAL)

Credits: 15 plus credits awarded for evidenced prior learningLevel: 4 / 5 / 6 / 7

Duration – up to 12 months (postgraduate), up to 18 months (undergraduate)Introduction:

This module is designed to enable you to claim academic credits for prior experiential or certificated learning. By the end of this module, you will have identified learning that you have undertaken in your workplace and collated a portfolio of evidence that enables you to claim up to two-thirds of a qualification for that learning. The level and the amount of credits that you can claim will depend on your experience and your job role. This module may form part of an overall qualification in Professional Practice (Cert HE, Foundation Degree, BA or Masters)

All employees

Benefits:

• Recognition and accreditation for prior learning• Reflect on skills and experience to build on future development Consider how change can be implemented

in the workplace

Assessment:

Reflective essay

Portfolio of evidence consisting of:

• An annotated CV describing your work-based activities• An annotated job description• A portfolio of learning experience supported by evidence

Research Methods for Work-based Learning

Introduction:

The programme is designed to raise awareness of the key areas to consider when undertaking research in work-based settings. The background and language of research will be explored, together with the most appropriate methods to use for specific investigations.

For whom?

All employees involved in research now or in the future (and analysis).

Benefits:

The skills of investigation, analysis, evaluation and synthesis will be developed throughout this module.

• An understanding of the research process and a range of research methods• An appreciation of how research processes can benefit both the professional and the workplace. • The module also helps to develop skills in evaluation and writing

Assessment:

Assessment is based on a portfolio of 2 reports, which consist of the following:

• A short report to explain how research could be personally and professionally relevant.• A critical evaluation of potential approaches to methodology, research strategies and techniques of work-

based research.

Further information:

• It is important to note that during your period of study you will be supported by a designated tutor.• Once you have successfully completed the module you will gain 15 credits that you can put towards further

study if you wish. The module is available at levels 4, 5, 6 and 7 and will consist of 1 training day a month.

Sustainability for the Workplace

Credits: 30 Level: 4 / 5 / 7 Duration – 4 days, taught sessions

Introduction:

This module introduces participants to the vastly complex concept of sustainability, and prepares them to make their own workplace more economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable.

The following areas will be covered during the module:

• An examination of the definitions and understandings of sustainability in a historical and a modern context• An exploration of the national and international legislation governing sustainable practice• Analysis of the interaction between economic, social, and environmental factors, and a range of theories

on balancing the three to achieve a picture of sustainability that suits the learner’s unique workplace• Practicing the tools and techniques that can be used to make workplaces more sustainable, preparing the

learner to make lasting change

For whom?

This module is for all learners who want to increase their knowledge of sustainability and its impacts on workplaces.

Benefits:

This module places equal focus on broadening the learner’s understanding of sustainability as a concept and providing the learner with the tools and knowledge necessary to make concrete sustainable impacts in his/her workplace. Learners will:

• Develop a knowledge of the current legislative climate and how it affects sustainable practice• Build the skills necessary to assess their own workplace impact on sustainable practice, and make

recommendations for change• Learn how to use tools of change management to oversee sustainable change in their own workplace

Assessment:

All learners will complete written assignments based on their knowledge of sustainability as well as their assessment of and plans for their own workplace. Advanced learners will also complete a presentation of their work.

Work-based Learning Plan

Credits: 30 Level: 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 Duration – I day, taught session

Introduction:

The learning plan will identify what the learner has already learnt and support the recognition of learning needed in relation to their work. Where appropriate, the plan will also evidence whether a claim can be made for credit for experiential learning achieved.

Assessment:

• CV and Job description • Evidence of Training Needs Analysis• A reflective review• Personal Development plan that will identify your training and development needs

Work-based Learning Project

Credits: 30/45/60 Level: 7

Introduction:

This module is a compulsory module if you wish to complete a Masters qualification in Professional Practice. This will involve a written proposal drawn up by the learner in consultation with tutors and their workplace. Ethical issues must be considered in this proposal in terms of the project itself, its methodology and the proposed implementation of the project.

For who?

All employees undertaking the Masters in Professional Practice
