Chapter Director Dave & Sheila Shaffer

This month’s Chapter Directors article will be a bit short as we’ve devoted several addi-tional pages in this newsletter to Keith & Kim Hall’s motorcycle trip out west. Kim has written a wonderful synopsis story of their trip and has included several pictures to share with us.

Also in this month’s newsletter you’ll find the “Member of the Month” page which high-lights Chapter W’s newest members, Jim and Connie Prairie. They live near Heltonville on hwy 58, east of hwy 446. They transferred their GWRRA membership to Chapter W af-ter meeting Kim and Keith and joining in on a few chapter rides. They liked the rides and had fun. Welcome Jim & Connie!

The annual Chapter W Weenie Roast is on Saturday October 14 at the Lewis’ home in Sey-mour. There will be a sign-up sheet at the gathering as to what you’re bringing to share. Hotdogs, brats and buns will be provided by the chapter. This is always a fun event and hope to see you there. Come at 5….eat at 6pm.

Chapter Card & Game Party dates are listed in this newsletter and begin next month start-ing Saturday November 4th at Steve Cox’s home. Some dates are already spoken for but if you’re interested in hosting a party please get with us and let us know.

On Wednesday September 6, 2017, 20 members and 1 guest were present at the gathering of Chapter W. The gathering was opened with Pledge to the Flag led by Paul Dettmer at the Sirloin Stockade in Colum-bus, Indiana. Paul and Gloria Dettmer reported on their Wing Ding trip to Grapevine, TX. Next year Wing Ding will be in Knoxville, TN. There is still a few openings for upcoming rides for ride leaders. Ride schedule: Saturday September 9, Wednesday September 13, Sunday September 17 and Wednesday September 27. Let Kim or Keith Hall or Dave Shaffer know if you want to lead or have an idea for one of these rides. Third Wednesday dinner outing will be September 20 in Seymour at the Poplar Street Restaurant. Fall District meeting is Saturday October 21 in Lafayette, Indiana. Dave Shaffer, Chapter Director, reported that there will be some changes to GWRRA starting January 1, 2018. These changes will start at the Chapter level to the National level. Winter Rendezvous for next year will be February 9 and 10, 2018. Dart Liebrandt, Chapter Ride Educator, reminded everyone that texting is illegal in Indiana and in some other states. Need to check helmet laws in each state you go into. Some you are required to wear one others not, look in Gold Book. Game played was led by Beck Van Antwerp. Quarterly drawing was held Dave Shaffer, Dart Liebrandt and Gloria Dettmer's name were drawn Fall season is approaching watch for farm tractor and fallen leaves on rides Secretary Gloria Dettmer..

Hello fellow Chapter W members. Well, it is getting close to that time of year when deer start moving and hunting season. Keep a look out for those 4 legged critters. When you spot one or more, you never know which way they are going to go. I have seen a deer run across the road and as you get nearer it suddenly decides to back across the road and almost hit it. Also the leaves will start falling soon, and wet leaves can be as slick as ice. I know it is a beautiful time of the year to go for a ride and see all the lovely fall colors, but you must re-main diligent. The co-rider can be a great help on keeping an eye out for things. Donna and I continue to see so many folks texting and driving, it is so scary. They need to have the self control to find a save to pull over if they need to text - otherwise wait until they get to where they are going. I do not think any of the text messages are so important as to endanger themselves and others. This is a great time to start taking stock of things you need for your bike/trike, helmet or oth-er riding stuff to put together a Christmas list . Take care, and ride safe. A Trip to Remember by Keith and Kim Hall

2017 was a special year to celebrate at the Hall household. On June 13, Keith and I cele-brated our 25th wedding anniversary and Sep-tember 27, I (Kim) celebrated my 50th birth-day. To celebrate, we decided to mark a cou-ple of things off our bucket list. So, on Satur-day Sept. 2, we headed west on the cycles planning to take 2 lane roads for most of the trip. We didn’t have a set schedule and we didn’t have any hotel rooms booked in advance. We just knew that the one thing we want-ed to do was to ride up Pikes Peak.

The first day was spent riding Hwy 50 to St. Louis then headed to Bowling Green MO. We rode approx. 350 miles before calling it a night. It was roads that we had ridden before but ya gotta get there somehow. One thing that we noticed when we got into town was that all the cars were covered with thick dust and we could-n’t figure out why. When leaving the next morning, we noticed that ALL roads that were leading off the main Hwy were gravel, something you don’t see much of around here.

On day 2, we rode State Rd 36 to Phillipsburg, KS approx. 465 miles. As you all know, there isn ’t much to see in Kansas except lots of wind turbines and 100’s of acres of sunflowers. Now we know where all those sunflower seeds come from. We rode several miles without even seeing a car. We actually parked along the side of the road to take a break and eat a snack. The weather was beautiful but a little warm at 100*.

On day 3, we headed out to Colorado Springs on Hwy 24. As we were riding along, I thought Keith had tricked me, there was a road sign that said Paris à Mexico ß. We decided we better not chance it so we keep on riding toward Colorado Springs. After riding for approx., 360 miles, we spent the night a Manitou Springs, CO. We got there early in the evening so we decided to walk down the street to find something to eat. I saw a sign that said Maggie’s Farm. I told Keith that it must be a good place to eat because it was packed! As we got a little closer, to my surprise it was Maggie’s Farm Retail Marijuana Store, not something that you would see in Indiana. We decided to keep on walking and head down to Subway.

Day 4 was the day to mark off our bucket list item so we headed to Pikes Peak. It was AWESOME! There are no guardrails, the wind is fierce and the roads are continuous hairpin switchbacks but we made it!! There was no doubt that Keith could do it with no problem but the before named obstacles are not my favorite riding conditions. Several people commented that they couldn’t believe I was riding a Goldwing all by myself. We spent a little bit of time at the Summit walking around but with the altitude of 14115 ft. it’s not the easiest to breathe. We snapped a few pictures and headed down. Oh! the wind and switchbacks weren’t any better go-

ing down . We stopped at one of the picnic areas on the way down to have a PBJ sandwich and some chips to celebrate. We rode approx. 250 miles that day and spent the night at Loveland CO. just north of Denver CO.

On day 5, we headed out going through Big Thompson Canyon, Rocky Mtn. National Park, Grand Lake CO and Independence Pass spending the night at Glenwood CO. We stopped at several sites along the

Page 10: G.W.R.R.A. Anniversaries - indianaonwings.org · There will be a sign-up sheet at the gathering as to ... Third Wednesday dinner outing will be September 20 in Seymour at the

way and talked to some interesting people. While having a PBJ sandwich in Rocky Mtn. National park, an old-er couple from WI came up to us and asked what part of IN we were from. We told them Columbus and they knew exactly where it was. He was a doctor that went to IU and was going to join a pediatric practice in Co-lumbus, but his family talked him into moving back to WI. We also talked to a couple from Guatemala who had flown to Denver, rented a Harley and was touring the west. The lady was impressed that I could ride a Goldwing all the way from Indiana. It was a great day and after approx. 350 miles we were ready to call it a night.

The morning of day 6 we filled up our tanks with gas and made our way to Utah, riding through Gun-nison National Forest on Hwy 141. It was a great but desolate ride. We saw nothing but mountains, sand and sage brush but not a person in site. We rode several miles before even seeing a house but most were aban-doned. We had ridden several miles and decided that it was time that we look for a gas station. The GPS showed that there was a town a few miles ahead but when we got there, the town was nonexistent so we kept on riding. Soon we came to a road sign that stated Bedrock was 56 miles ahead. Oh good! we were getting low on gas so we would stop there. WELL when we arrived at Bedrock, Fred and Barney were gone and the Tex-aco station was boarded up!! With no other options, we had to keep riding. We had gone hours without seeing a single car or civilization and I was getting a little worried. Keith advised me to only go 45mph and pull in my clutch when going down the mountains to conserve gas. Eventually the gas light came on and I was A LOT worried. FINALLY! after riding 310 miles on a tank of gas we made it to Moab UT and turned into the first gas station we could find. We put in 5.5 gallon of gas so Keith said we were good because we had approx. 1 gallon left so we could have kept on going. I told him that we were not going to chance it!! Hotel rooms in Moab are crazy expensive in the $200-$300 range. We finally found a Super 8 that was reasonable and checked in. We got there early so decided to go ahead and go to Arches National Park. We had been there be-fore but only had time to go through part of the park so we decided to start on the side that we hadn’t made it to previously. After that we would then circle around to the rest of the park. The weather was perfect but in the distance, we thought there was a dark cloud. After going through devil’s garden in the beautiful weather, we headed toward the windows and it started pouring down rain, good thing we had already seen it on a previous trip.

On day 7, we left Moab UT headed for Bryce Canyon going through Glen Canyon National Park, Capi-tal Reef National Park, Dixie National Forest spending the night at Panguitch UT. I’m a little upset that we decided not to attend the UT National Highschool Rodeo while we were there. I think it would have been very interesting but we had ridden approx. 400 miles so we were tired and needed to plan for the upcoming day.

Day 8 was not in our original plans. Since we were so close to my sister, we decided to ride on to Show Low AZ to visit her. Along the way, we went through Grand Staircase, Escalante National Monument, Page AZ Navajo Indian Reservation, Winslow/Holbrook/Snowflake AZ and Sitgreaves National Forest for a ap-prox. 500 miles. Being on a 3-hour time difference from IN, we were tired when we got there. We went out to eat supper and instead of sightseeing we decided to just go back to their house and visit. We are used to having deer in our backyard but they have huge elk in theirs. It was a great evening visiting with my sister and her husband while listening to the elk hollering in the background. It is an amazing sound.

We headed out early on day 9 to head through New Mexico. We went through Gallup New Mexico, which stated that they are the most patriot city in America. We went through UTE Mtn. Indian Reservation in which we stopped at a little local gas station. While there a local older blind gentleman came in with his care-giver, everyone there knew him. Apparently, he is the local tour guide for the scenic things in that area, which I found very interesting since he was blind. Leaving New Mexico, we went through San Juan National Forest and Uncompahgre National Forest headed for Montrose CO to spend the night after riding approx. 450 miles.

Page 11: G.W.R.R.A. Anniversaries - indianaonwings.org · There will be a sign-up sheet at the gathering as to ... Third Wednesday dinner outing will be September 20 in Seymour at the

Day 10 we started working our way toward home by riding Hwy 50. It had been a great trip but we’re always glad to be heading home. We continued toward home through Colorado. My mom’s ancestors are from Penrose CO so we decided to stop there to mail a postcard to her from their post office. It was a surprise for her because we had told her that we weren’t going to have time to go near there. We also rode through San Isabel National Forest, Royal Gorge and Pueblo CO ending up in La Junta CO to spend the night after riding approx. 350 miles.

On day 11 we continued to make our way toward home going through Dodge City KS which is an inter-esting city. We spent the night at McPherson KS, where I think we were the only ones at the hotel. We had a nice suite room with a sliding glass door to the indoor courtyard. We played a couple of games of pool before heading off to bed. By this time, we had ridden approx. 400 miles, we were close to home and ready to get there so we had a hard time falling asleep.

On Day 12 after a restless sleepless night, we started our day ear ly at 4am headed for home. We jumped on Interstate 70 to get us through Kansas City and St Louis and then took Interstate 64 out of St Louis to Hwy 50. We were on the home stretch so there was no stopping us now! We rode approx. 700 miles to get home. We had an AWESOME trip but were glad to be HOME.

We had ridden a total of approx. 4850 miles through 7 states in 12 days. What an accomplishment to be able to make some checks on our bucket list!

If you ever get the chance to travel the west, we highly recommend it!

Until we ride again,
