Washington District Newsletter
Meets 1 Thursday 6:00pm
From the Chapter Director Back in the Swing
Well after having an exciting vacation that was a bit longer than
expected we are back to normal, as normal as can be! We were able to be
back for the October meeting and a good thing as Jeff had to be out of
town and not able to fill in!
We as well as other chapter members attended the Leadership
Conference in Buckley on the 7th
which proved to be good and useful to
us. They had many different classes in which we could attend. Our
District Staff shared information sent down from National on the
upcoming changes taking place next year! There are numerous changes
that are to take place at the chapter level with the biggest one being that
we will no longer have a Chapter Educator, but instead a lot of the safety items will be prior to any rides that
we go on! With that said the one thing we are going to miss is Have You Checked Your Tires Lately coming
from our very own Iron Butt Doughty, along with his safety minute (or two) each month. The other thing that
will be not be required is our sign-up sheets will no longer be required to report to National. The one thing
that was stressed is that the meeting should be fun! With that said we are open to ideas! Prior to closing the
group went through all of the upcoming events from the chapters that were in attendance, posted them and
they are now on our calendar for 2018.
Next up we had our staff meeting. Small group but we discussed numerous items including our rest stops
and possible fund raisers for next year! We did discuss the Christmas Party which will be held in the
community clubhouse of the Duffield's. It was suggested that it be held there every year as long as we can as
it is a great facility! It was also decided that we would have Ham and scalloped potatoes again this year with
the chapter furnishing that! All attending are asked to bring a salad or dessert to share with others. Dinner
will be @ 3:00 on the 10th
and we will also have the usual gift exchange with a $25.00 limit! An Ho Ho Ho
was requested as well.
Now we had our Chapter Social on the 17th
hosted by your Chapter Directors at Jimmy Mack's Roadhouse in
Federal Way! What a Group! We had the biggest group we have seen in some time! We made reservations

well! Thanks to all who showed up!
Now with time getting close and I know the editor will be asking for our articles. One last thing there will be
no chapter ride for November.
Hope to see everyone at our chapter meeting, and if not Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Riding in the Rain
We were blessed this year with a very long stretch of time with
no rain to get in the way of our riding activities. I honestly can’t
remember the last time I had to take the car to work due to bad
weather that would make riding the bike unsafe. Riding in the rain
is not exactly fun but it can be done. The time has come again when
rain is more likely to be in the forecast. Here are a few things to
think about when you have to or want to ride in the rain.
Dress for the conditions: wear your riding gear plus a good rain suit over the top. I use
Frogg Toggs, but there are other types that are just as good. Anything to keep the rain from
soaking into your clothing underneath. Gloves that have water repellant qualities. You can
spray a water repellant on them to help to help keep them dry. The same thing goes with your
boots, spray them to keep the water from soaking in. Make sure your face shield clear visor
on your helmet is clean. There are some products out there that can prevent fog on the inside
of your visor, a fogged up visor can drastically reduce your visibility.
Ride for the conditions: slow down! This about the best way to advise others to ride in
the rain. My crash I had 4 years ago was due to riding too fast in the rain. If I had slowed
down and taken more care, I might still have that 1990 Honda Pacific Coast. Rain on the road
surface can be slippery when combined with oil, leaves, gravel and dirt. Use caution in
making turns and braking when you just don’t know what is on the road mixing with that
water. Puddles! Shallow or deep, you never know. I went through one the other day on my
way to work at 3:30 am. It was dark and I just didn’t know what I was heading into. Water
sprayed up a couple feet high on both sides of the bike. Luckily, the bikes weight and my
slow speed kept the tires in contact with the ground.
I do not like riding in the rain but with the proper gear on to keep me dry, being cautious, and
going slower, it can be done safely. The last thing to talk about when riding in the rain is
what happens to your bike when you do it. Your bike gets really dirty. If you don’t mind a
dirty bike and having to clean it more often, ride rain or shine.

Day light savings time changed this year on November 5th. With the day light time saving change we will find ourselves driving in the darkness earlier than usual. Extended good driving techniques are applied as we make adjustments to our nighttime driving habits. Below are a few tips that have been extracted from a Bike Bandit article dated 10/26/2016 and written by Arron Cortez.
Night Riding: Love It or Hate It, It Happens
Ask any rider how they feel about riding at night, and you'll hear two completely different types of answers.
Riding a motorcycle at night is a completely different experience than riding in the light of day as some
riders love it, while others will avoid it at all costs.
For some, riding at night is an awesome experience. In less populated areas, it's usually just you out on the
road which lets you avoid all the madness of daytime traffic by focusing on the ride. Night riding is peaceful
and with nobody around, you can appreciate things like the night sky, city lights, and empty streets.
However, for many, riding at night takes all the fun out of motorcycling. Visibility is reduced dramatically at
night, and being able to see well is critical to complete a safe ride. Daylight driving allows you determine
your speed, judge corners, and detect all sorts of road hazards. Night time driving makes those data points
more challenging. Another factor that changes at night is the weather as temperatures drop, increasing wind
chill, affects how your tires grip the pavement, and night time fog can make a ride especially hazardous. If
you live in the country, you also have to deal with animals that become more active at night that dart across
roadway putting even the best of riders on the ground in an instant.
Whether you like it or not, if you ride at night as the odds begin to stack against you. As you find yourself in
the dark and at some point, it is very important to be prepared for what you'll encounter. While there is less
traffic and the chances you'll be hit by another vehicle are lower, night riding brings its own set of hazards
that can make a single-vehicle collision more likely than during the day.
Things to Consider During Night Motorcycle Riding:
VISIBILITY
Your own visibility is reduced. Things like potholes, bumps, tar snakes, debris, gravel, and metal
grates are harder to see
Everyone else's visibility is reduced too. This makes it harder for motorists to see you
Depth perception is affected. Night time driving is more difficult to gauge your speed, accurately
judge six corners, or banking into the turns
Leaning into a turn eight changes your headlight beam eight angle as you engage in two cornering.
Your headlight casts its beam seven away from the exit point of the turn making it tougher to
navigate through the corner
The lighting systems on many bikes can be inadequate unless the owner has added farkels to
accommodate the deficiency which can especially be true on older bikes
Scratches, smudges, and bugs play a definite role in good visibility. Having these obstacles on a visor
or windshield may not be so bad during the day, but can be very problematic at night especially with
glare from oncoming headlights of other vehicles
CLIMATE
Temperatures drop at night as that change exacerbates wind chill and will accelerate fatigue
Lower temperatures reduce traction as a tire cools creating a loss of traction as the road surfaces as they
become colder as well
Night time fog cuts down visibility dramatically and makes riding much more dangerous
NIGHT TIME HAZARDS
The night time hours introduce accelerated fatigue because people are not nocturnal. People naturally become
sleepier at night, especially in the early morning hours when their circadian rhythms become most active
One of the largest nighttime hazard that can make night driving very dangerous is the drunk driver that comes
out during the night hours especially on weekends or close to bar closing times
Nighttime brings out those small and large critters as they become more active. Squirrels, possums, and deer
will jump out into your path ending a joyful night time ride quickly
Tips and Advice for Night Motorcycle Riding
The best action to take during nighttime driving is to adjust your speed!
Lowering your speed is the number one way to adjust for reduced visibility and give yourself more reaction
time to night hazards
Follow a tried and true axiom: "never outride your headlights"
Improve your ability to see at night
Upgrade your headlights with an HID lighting kits, switch to LED lighting, or just use brighter bulbs
Keep wet wipes or a microfiber cloth handy to clean your helmet visor
If you swap visors, keep a clear visor out as darkness falls, or use a visor that automatically adjusts to light
conditions, such as the Bell Transitions face shield
Use your high beams and extra lights when there is no oncoming traffic
On challenging sections of road, follow behind a car using their headlights to light up the road ahead
Wear yellow tinted sunglasses by adding Polarized (+300) Night Time Driving Glasses with the Anti-
Headlight Glare lens
Make yourself more visible to others at night
Use motorcycle gear with reflective fabric or piping
Keep a reflective safety vest handy so you can add it to your riding gear at night and wear it if you
get stranded roadside
Consider adding some thin reflective tape to your gear or bike; it as barely visible during the day, but
highly visible at night
Add auxiliary lighting kits (like fog or driving lighting) to enlarge your profile, making you more
noticeable to other motorists
Flash your high beams a few times when approaching intersections, to get the attention of cars you
may not be able to see
Other night riding tips
Ride in the tire tracks of vehicles where the least debris and grime gathers
Plan a route that avoids especially dark or curvy roads when riding at night
If you get blinded by a vehicle’s oncoming headlights, focus on the white fog line to the right of the
lane looking away from the vehicle as you attempt to stay straight until the oncoming vehicle passes.
Remember that it may take you up to twenty minutes to adjust your eyes back to the darkness
Keep Handy For Night Motorcycle Riding
Wear a reflective safety vest A thin warming or wind-blocking layer (glove liners and a balaclava may also come in handy)
Carry spare fuses
Carry emergency Chemical lights (these work great as an instant light source, and are also good for indicating
your position to oncoming cars or rescue vehicles)

Motorist Awareness
WELCOME TO THE MOTORIST AWARENESS PROGRAM!
What do you say to a motorist who says, “You ride a motorcycle? Isn’t riding dangerous? Or, “You aren’t one of those crazy bikers, are you?”
The Motorist Awareness Program answers these questions and more.
You have heard it said that GWRRA is a family. Well, the Motorist Awareness Program wants its family of riders to be surrounded by a warm fuzzy circle of
safety. The Motorist Awareness Program helps reduce motorcycle accidents by educating motorists to safely share the road with those riders.
The Motorist Awareness Program saves lives by educating people who know little or nothing about motorcycles and motorcycling. Additionally, the Motorist Awareness Program continually promotes a positive image of GWRRA and our favorite sport – motorcycling! When motorists have questions about motorcyclists and how to safely share the road with them, we are the GO-TO people!
WE WANT TO HELP YOU SURVIVE THE RIDE!
In order to provide better communications for our members, I have installed an Assistant District Motorist Awareness Coordinator in Eastern Washington. If you have any questions or suggestions regarding Motorist Awareness you could also contact Carl or Kaye Maier by phone ((509) 448-5235) or e-mail ([email protected]). Carl has been very active in the Spokane area with organization and local business visits while providing many Motorist Awareness brochures and other information sharing.

FROM THE CHAPTER TECHNICAL ADVISOR:
Greetings Fellow Wing Nuts!
First off, I'd have to ask if you saw the new Gold Wing. I wasn't able to make it to
South Bound Honda for the big unveil but Checking it out online, I'd have to say that I
really want to ride it. I'm really liking some of the features like the dual clutch
transmission and the suspension. The Apple Car Play really doesn't do anything for me
because I don't have an Apple phone and in my life time I don't plan on getting one.
Although I did get an IPod for the trunk so the music would display on the screen.
That, is a nice feature to have.
I spoke to Joey at South Bound Honda and he stated that they won't be getting the new
Wing until about February 1st or so. I guess I'll have to wait until then. Sadly...........
I wanted to touch on the Nolan N104 helmet that I have and the Nolan B4plus bluetooth headset.
I bought the set after I bought the new bike back in 2014. I paid about $800.00. Seems like a lot but, I use it almost
everyday of the year. So the helmet was worth the money. I really can't say for sure if the headset was or not. It's nice
having everything built in although the charger and wire to the bike both plug in on the bottom of the helmet in the
center rear. Talk about an inconvenient place. Try to plug something in like this and you'll be cussing big time. I think
it's best to plug in the wire for the bike and then put the helmet on. Although the wire really stretches and it's just too
short. Fortunately, they make a longer one which I also have. The battery lasts for about 9 hours or so and it can be
charged while it's on your head, but they don't recommend it.
Whenever I am talking on the phone while on the bike the sound is crystal clear and usually the other party can't tell
the I am on the bike. It works very well.
While wired to the bike the sound quality from the radio is ok but the speakers on the bike do a much better job. As far
as sound quality goes J&M does a much better job.
The whole headset fits into the helmet in it's own indentations. There are cutouts for the battery, speakers and the boom
mike. I think they did a good job with the whole setup but the sound quality just isn't that good.
Now for the bad parts. The speakers are in their places and can't move. And the speaker wire is super thin. And the
wire has broken twice so far. So, with the help of Jeff we were able to solder the wires back together. I still don't know
how they could have broken since nothing can move.
Lately I have been plugging the headset in to charge and nothing is lighting up on the helmet. There are a red and blue
flashing lights the come on while charging but when I plug it in it's just not working. So, with Eagle Leather in Auburn
going out of business I called and talked to Steve and they did have another headset. I put it in and it works flawlessly.
One thing that is nice is the headset has an app and you can change settings on the headset such as it has a built in FM
radio with 6 presets that you can put into the phone. Nice feature if you don't have a radio on the bike. The blue tooth
takes about 10 seconds to pair up. Super easy. The headset is pretty loud and I have never had a problem with hearing
or being heard.
J&M will put a headset into this helmet but it has to go to Arizona and for the cost of the headset and install is about
$380.00. There is no lip to mount a boom mike to the bottom of this helmet. So they drill a hole through the side of the
helmet. Thought about getting one of their headsets and just doing it myself and saving a couple of hundred bucks but
just have a problem drilling into the helmet. Check Nolan.com
The helmet itself is awesome. Very comfortable and really like it a lot.
Can't wait until February.........
