MISSING CHAPTER DIRECTOR

Thanks to ACD Bob Williams and others who filled in for me at the September Gathering. Your CD was in York participating in the York Bike Night parade. Wow… so many bikes, trikes, etc. I was proud to display our past member Craig Famous’ flag setup (see picture) …. I am a member of the oldest women’s motorcycle group in America, the Motor Maids were leaders in the parade. I’ve done this for the past five years and the one thing that always impresses me is the huge number of motorcyclists in the area and the good will and positive image presented by all. This is evident in each year’s repetition of the event.

Recapping last month… I understand that the Grillo family rode to the Gathering in their new “super” ride. Everyone loved Ellen’s enthusiasm and huge smile… mirroring Pete’s thrill with having Ruth and Ellen able to share his love of motorcycling. That bike setup is an eye catcher for sure. The ride after the Gathering was to the Aviation Museum led by Nick Bykowski… thanks for a great ride and picnic lunch… Last month our chapter showed great respect for friend and rider, Bob Becker, with a huge turnout to celebrate his life and his contribution to each of us… the rides he led were always fun… his fun-loving personality and interesting color combinations created memories that will live on. Thanks, Bob, for the memories. MCC Sale days was well attended and members enjoyed sharing GWRRA and chapter Y info. Thanks Jeff and Pam for organizing this special event.

October is here… 9 riders enjoyed a day full of cool riding and a tour of the Antique Automobile Museum in Hershey. Thanks to Bob Cox and Katie Green for leading us. Other members in attendance were Mark Johnson, Nettie and Rich McFarland and tailing Peggy Kratz. Prospective Y members there included Maryann and Lester Bennett… they recently moved to this area from New York and attended a previous gathering… with them, was their daughter, Tracey Coyne… both ride trikes and we look forward to seeing them at more Y events.

This Saturday, 10/13, PA Chapter K is sponsoring a Dice Run… see the attached flyer for details… anyone interested in going call or email me. Registration is 9-11 am, which would require KSU by 7:30 am. This is an all day ride… so much fun. OR… volunteer to lead a ride… if you lead, we will follow…

Check out the flyer on Maryland/Delaware’s Winter Thing… January 3-5… make your reservations… its always a great time… ask to Bob Williams about it.

Mark your calendar and plan to join the fun at our Y holiday party… Dec. 8. Pam and her elves are hard at work creating a great time. Peggy and Ron Kratz … [email protected] and 610 287 8393

As riding opportunities slow down, other activities are ramping up. We have Saturday informal dinners and a Christmas party coming soon. Remember to shop for your $20 gift exchange item (each participant will need one gift for the gift exchange). The gift should be wrapped and marked male, female, or unisex on an outside tag. No gag gifts please. We’re also excepting gift donations for the raffle.

The Christmas party is scheduled for Saturday December 8th at PC Pub. I’ll send an e-mail out closer to that time reminding everyone.

Our Saturday informal dinners begin in November at Franconia Heritage. Here are the dates and times:

November 10th @ 5:00pm.

January 12th. @ 5:00pm

February 9th. @ 5:00pm.

March 9th. @ 5:00pm.

Keep checking your e-mail for further information on all events.

We’ve had a good year with our membership. We have gained about a dozen people. We have also lost some members who have not renewed because they’re not riding anymore. It’s very important to continue to promote GWRRA and Chapter Y throughout the year, whenever you can. We have new GWRRA pamphlets, so if you need some to have on your bike for that perfect opportunity, let me know and I’ll provide them to you.

Our 2019 District Rally is in York, PA in May and Wing Ding is in Nashville, TN in August. Plan ahead and check out the websites for both events. There are deadlines for registration, so don’t miss out on anything you’d like to attend.

As always, please let me know if any of your information changes so I can update e-mail, phone, and address lists.

Thank you to all those who come out for our rides, dinners, and other activities! And for those who couldn’t, we miss you and hope to see you soon!

G.W.R.R.A. Wing Ding 40 by Katie Green

Sunday, August 26th, was a beautiful day for a ride...and what a ride we had planned for the day!! We met Rich and Nettie, Dave and Jane, Peggy, and Pete at the WAWA at Route 100, just off 78 for kick stands up at 8:30. Rich had mapped out and was leading us (5 bikes, and 8 members) to our overnight destination in Staunton, VA. With the excitement and anticipation, the ride was going smoothly and quickly, so we rode a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Even I thought that the curves we encountered were fun, but as it turns out, Dave’s front brakes got heated up and quit! We pulled into a deserted church parking lot to check it out, and then, by using downshifting, the brakes got a chance to cool down and we headed for lunch . We found the greatest restaurant –a little Irish Pub called Nana’s in Middletown, VA. I had the best corned beef sandwich EVER, Nettie loved her meatloaf, and everybody else raved about their meals also! After that very satisfying lunch, we hopped back on 81 to arrive in Staunton about 3:30. After checking in, Rich and Pete headed out for some liquid refreshments, Bob took a nap, and we girls went to cool off in the outdoor pool before dinner. We just had to walk across the parking lot to have Chinese food, and then took a three block walk further into town and found a fabulous ice cream place! After breakfast the next morning, we finished the ride to Knoxville and got checked into the LaQuinta on Papermill Road, where we really enjoyed deluxe accommodations. Other members, Gary and Debbie met us there, having ridden in from WV earlier. Along the highway, I was fascinated by the dense foliage…it turns out that it was kudzu, commonly referred to as the “scourge of the South”. Seems that it was originally planted as groundcover in the south when the highways were first built, but then it multiplied rapidly and overgrew everything in it’s path as the parasitic plant took hold. You can see it climbing up trees, poles, signs, and creeping along wires, but I have to admit that I found it really beautiful – it made the roadsides very artistic and sometimes with a little imagination, you might see an elephant, or some other animal. I tried to take pictures, but it’s a little difficult from a moving bike! Anyway, the first night, we were going to the preregistration welcome dinner at the Museum of Appalachia. It turned out to be a disaster…extreme heat made even worse by standing in LLOONNGG lines to buy water, pick up our packets, and get our food. Under the big tents, it was even hotter, and after our ice cream sundaes, we headed back to hop in the pool and have some refreshments. The explanation was that things went awry because there were 1200 people signed up, but over 3000 actually showed up! It was quite the display of motorcycles though, as every square inch of parking space (macadam, gravel, and grass) was utilized! One of the biggest reasons I love these long, multi-day rides is the camaraderie and the opportunity to get to know your fellow riders even better. It’s so much fun to meet up for cocktails and snacks, or take-out, in the lobby, poolside, or someone’s [BIG] room (wink, wink) after a long, satisfying day of riding new roads! Rich had mapped out a few rides for us, and the first two days Pete and Bob led us on our own rides. There is some mighty fine riding in those mountainous parts! Those who had purchased tickets went to the J and M dinner/ hypnotic entertainment and the Star Wars Disco Party – Rich and Nettie in very innovative costumes! – in the evenings. Then we all decided to visit the vendors in the convention center , and I can be fairly certain that our own Pete gets the award for the most money spent at the WingDing 40!! He purchased a beautiful red and black Wing with a matching side car for his daughter, and we can’t wait to ride with him and his

7

family!! I only purchased a new armored riding jacket! As we returned from the vendors, we were greeted by our friend Gary, who was quite distressed. He was on his way to ride the tail of the dragon that morning when something broke in the rear end of his trike. After waiting hours for assistance, his trike was finally returned to the hotel, and he set about making arrangements to rent a U-Haul truck and trailer to get his trike and trailer back home. Since he had to get a ride to the rental place, and we only had a motorcycle, Gary hopped on the back with Bob and they rode the 25 miles to pick up the truck. Both agreed it was quite the experience, as Gary hadn’t ridden on the back of a bike in ages, and told me he ruined my armrests squeezing them so hard! Anyway, we got them all loaded up and they left for home early Friday morning. After a full day of activity Friday [including a great French Creperie lunch!], Peggy, Pete, and I wanted to go in to town for the light parade and bike judging at 7 p.m. I got my first trike ride as Peggy let me bum a ride with her! It sure was different than a two-wheeler, but I enjoyed it a lot! Pete found us a central (free) garage to park in, and we proceeded to walk the three blocks to the parade route. We found an excellent “old-timey” Cruze Farm ice cream parlor, and were in line waiting to get in as we watched the parade go by. After enjoying our treats, we walked another 7 or 8 blocks to see the bike lights, vote for our favorites, and enjoy the food trucks. It was an awesome venue with plenty of seating, parking, and amenities! Walking back to the parking garage, we passed a street performer in the Market Square and stopped to watch. We all agreed that Knoxville was a very beautiful, pleasant, and visitor-friendly town! Saturday, we headed back down to the convention center for last minute purchases and the closing ceremonies, and then headed back to the hotel for take-out dinner in the lobby. The lobby/breakfast room was a great place to meet other wingers, either at breakfast or just hanging out, and we made a few new friends while doing so. On Sunday, kickstands were up at 8:30 to start the ride home, and again we stayed in Staunton, but at the Best Western this time. It was a great place with an indoor pool that Peggy and I took advantage of, and a convenient gift shop and restaurant right across the parking lot. As usual, we chatted away the evening hours on the patio with our refreshments and got a good night’s sleep for the return home on Monday. I have to say that I really had a good time with everyone, Rich did a great job with the planning and leading, and I, for one, am looking forward to Nashville next year! Just have to convince Bob…

Willow Grove Air Museum By Katie Green

I just wanted to write a little about our ride after the September 22nd meeting in order to publicly thank Nick for the well-organized day he put together for us! After a relatively small meeting attendance, we had six bikes to go on the ride: Nick, Mark, Rich, Bob & Katie, Dave & Jane, and Pete & Ellen on Ellen’s new bike/sidecar. After a relatively short ride we got to the museum, and Nick’s wife joined us. I have been there before, but never have I enjoyed a museum as much as this one with Nick as guide. His knowledge and delivery, coupled with his personal experiences, made the whole thing far more interesting for me. His organizational skills were evident as he had our lunch order [of FABULOUS hoagies] called in and picked up before we arrived at his home to enjoy lunch on the deck. Although he kept apologizing for the “traffic lights, etc.” associated with his residential area, and realizing that it’s not a motorcyclist’s dream ride, I enjoyed seeing Hatboro, Warminster, Washington’s Crossing, and other urban areas that I normally wouldn’t get to see. (Washington’s Crossing cemetery brought a quick prayer for Craig Famous and his family as it reminded me of our last ride there.) Then came the stop at Tanner’s for ice cream!! I swear it’s the first time I was unable to finish my HUGE double dip cone!! We then got back on the bikes for our ride up 32 through New Hope and along the beautiful Delaware River. That has always been a go-to ride for Bob and I over the years and I never cease to enjoy the beauty and tranquility! I didn’t want the day to end when we stopped at the WaWa to head out in our different directions, but fortunately I can look forward to many more well-planned out rides in the future. Gotta say, our chapter does that VERY well!

I suppose I would be remiss if I neglected to mention the highlight of the day…when our cooler bounced off our rack, and blocked a very precarious road we were trying to traverse! It was an “exciting” [very small] portion of the ride – uphill with many potholes, and a steep drop off to the right – but our experienced riders made it look easy… it just added to the day!

Until next time…

FALL is on the way Doug Little

Now is a good time to perform a thorough T-CLOCK inspection before the weather changes. Cooler temperatures and beautiful color changes of the leaves makes for very easy and comfortable riding. With the fall season also comes its own set of riding situations that we should keep in mind.

Additional layers of clothing are needed for the temperatures that are encountered from early morning to mid-afternoon to late evening and nighttime riding. After riding through the summer months with lightweight protective clothing, the extra layers of clothing may seem a bit cumbersome at first. Take the time to get used to riding with the extra layers. Heavy gloves and jackets will give a bulky feel to the handle grips, controls and maneuvering of the cycle. The clutch and brake handles will feel different at first and all the fancy buttons and switches we have on the cycles may be a little hard to operate.

The fall season of road situations can seem to have a mind all their own. From wet and dry leaves on the roadway, to shade areas of roadway that never gets a chance to dry properly. The dry leaves can be bothersome if blown around by the wind. The wet leaves will reduce the friction patch of the tires thereby allowing the cycle to slide and possibly loose control. The wet leaves may also allow the vehicles coming at us from another direction to reduce their handling ability or loose control. This can be critical at intersections and on curves.

The shade areas of roadways that do not dry properly allowing a slight film to buildup on the roadway that acts very similar to black ice. As we all know there is very little to no control on black ice and the same happens when riding in the areas of wet or damp roadways. Adjusting your speed to match the situation, along with your riding ability and comfort level, can greatly reduce the hazards in these areas.

Remembering these key points can make for enjoyable fall foliage runs as we here in Pennsylvania have some of the best tree lined roads, hills and mountains. Make sure to get out and enjoy the scenery with its beautiful colors whether it is for short or long rides as the general riding season is coming to a close. Also remember that October starts the famous season for Deer to act a little crazy as they chase each other around the woods and fields.

Be safe and ride safe. Doug Little

Montgomeryville Cycle Center Fall Sale Days Recap

Let me start by thanking all those who came out, helped at the Chapter table and supported MCC’s Fall Sale Days. It was great to see so many members participating in the event. We had over 20 folks help out, we talked to a lot of people and we may have even gleaned a few new members! Not that our stunning display table and never-ending candy dish wasn’t a huge hit, but we were surrounded by brand new Gold Wings! That’s right, we had 9 2018 Gold Wings on display, 3 demos and 6 for sale. If that didn’t draw you in, I don’t know what would. And did I mention test drives? Yup, if you wanted to ride a 2018, that was the time to do it! Even Dennis couldn’t resist!

But even if you weren’t looking for a new Gold Wing, the merchandise was moving and so was the inventory, especially Saturday. Mother Nature may have rained on our parade occasionally, but the majority of the event was dry enough to enjoy. We even saw Nettie snag a new ride!

We greatly appreciate everyone’s support of MCC, especially Barb (Silverman) who supplied MCC staff with doughnuts for breakfast and sloppy joes for lunch. That was awesome! Again, great event everyone and thank you!

From the Web Side… Dan Reisinger, Webmaster

Hello Chapter Y!

First off – a BIG THANK YOU to our newsletter contributors this month! Katie Green, Doug Little, and Pam & Jeff Kratz. I think we are going to nominate Katie as our roving reporter. I enjoyed her highlights of the Chapter’s Wing Ding trip and the Wing Ding 40th stories followed by her Willow Grove Air Museum “report”. WAY TO GO GIRL!

Thank you Doug Little for your contribution! Doug is still providing those safety tips and guidance in riding safely with Knowledge – while G.W.R.R.A. did some Chapter restructuring this year, Doug has kept Chapter Y up-to-date on safe riding topics. His background just goes naturally to safety on the job, on the streets, behind the wheel of a car, and hanging on to motorcycle handlebars. We look forward to follow up help articles, Doug.

Thanks to Pam for keeping us up to date on the Informal Dinners, Christmas Party, and both Jeff and Pam on covering the Chapter’s table at our sponsor; Montgomeryville Cycle Center! I got to thinking this month (yea, I know “WHAT IS HE DOING NOW?” – from his mystery rides into danger [and somehow we make it out ok without carrying] to making sure he can claim at least one “U” turn) about the slogan we hold with G.W.R.R.A

Friends, Fun, Safety, Knowledge

The last two are quite self-explanatory, we want to ride safely and we can only do so with

knowledge (and PRACTICE). But the first two actually require (I took a while thinking about that but require is the closest I could get) us to invest something into any relationship that includes friends or / and fun. You have to get to know someone for them to be a friend otherwise they are a stranger or acquaintance and to have fun you determine what provides happiness.

So what is this all leading too? How about each month a member of Chapter Y submits a SHORT article about themselves (or you can all do it once and we will just run a couple a month)? We don’t need to have your life story but just a few lines about your interests outside of motorcycling, maybe a hobby you have or a passion for a charity for example. Why you got into motorcycling – was it a family tradition or are you starting that tradition? Have you always lived in your community or have you lived in many different communities? If you had the ability would you go back to one of them or would you pick another place? I remember an old saying “you can’t go home again” which I found was true when I left Ft. Lauderdale in 1990 and returned 3 years later. The place I knew had changed DRAMATICALLY! Of course, there was a lot of help by a small storm called Andrew.

I think a lot has to do with the passing of Bob Becker as to this thought process. At his Celebration of Life, I learned so much about his past and his accomplishments. Now I happen to know Bob since 2004 when I first became associated with GWRRA and Chapter Y. I waited 12 years before I actually heard Bob say “I have never been on this road.” because all of us who rode with Bob took for granted he helped pave the roads of Pennsylvania. He knew every road we took without referencing a map and even before GPS. His trips to Lucky’s Deli, Hessler’s, and the one I

The PA District Rally horse race (above), Roll For Dough picture with District Directors (right and below).

Enjoying a Chapter Y weekday ride to Maryland. Pete Grillo led the ride, stopped off at a Marina (where he has his sailboat), showed how the watercraft “live”, and even made sure there was an Ice Cream STOP!

15

remember vividly – Molly McGuire tour always had scenic byways, enough curves to excite our Chapter Director, and history of the area.

While I am a “youngster” in the area – I only moved here in 1990 – I know there are members of our chapter that have stories about the area that would really amaze me and I bet a lot of the members of Chapter Y. From your service to our country, the service to our communities (who is a volunteer fireman / firewoman or policeman or policewoman or . . . ?) or engaged in some new adventure!

Look forward to next month – more articles (the Antique Auto Museum with pictures), Jeff and Pam at Octoberfest in Daytona (or is that one of those what happens in Daytona STAYS in Daytona hmmmm), and just maybe we will have an article about and from one of our member

Friends - what do you think? Would you like to know a little bit more about you riding friend? To

make a friend, you usually need to be a friend – it will be fun, and isn’t that what the motto says

Friends, Fun, Safety, Knowledge

Until the next Ride. . . . .

Pennsylvania District Directors… Harold and Diane Jackson

Fall is officially here and so is the chilly weather. We rode with PA-N (our home chapter) to Erie for lunch and ice cream at Sara’s on the peninsula. When we left home it was 53 degrees, it reached a high of 60; it was a beautiful ride.

With the weather changing, we need to remember to plan for the ride and that your ride will be different then it was this summer. Don’t forget there are additional road hazards this time of year such as leaves, school buses and wildlife is moving around more. Stay safe and have FUN!

The PA District raffle tickets have been distriubited to your chapter. Hopefully, your Chapter has dispersed the tickets to you to sell. They make good chirstmas presents, stocking stuffers or tips for wait staff. They make a great “thank you” to a whole list of people who help and serve you such as your mail carrier, garbage collector, lawn mower or the person that removes snow. Remember for evey ticket you sell you are helping your Chapter.

We are looking for two (2) chapters to step up and host All Chapters East and All Chapters West. If you need any information or if your chapter is volunteering, please give us a call. It is a great fund raiser for the chapter and the event is FUN to host.

The registration form is online for the PA District Rally “Ride of the Roses”, May 16-18, 209

at the Wyndham Garden in York, PA. Make sure you take time to review the registration and get it in early if you plan on attending any of the special events, many of them have limited space. We already have registrations! Don’t forget to book your room at the hotel.

I hope you did not miss Wing Ding 40! It was a great time in Knoxville, TN with 8,090 in attendance. PA had some awards distributed to individuals in the District; pleas take some time to look at that page and see who won.

Wing Ding 41 will be held in Nashville, TN at the Gaylord, August 27-31, 2019. The Gaylord is accepting reservations and can be reached at 615-889-1000; the room rate is $149/night and $10/day for parking. These are great rates and you need to make your reservation soon before the block of rooms is sold out.

The big event on the calendar this month is Halloween. Watch for trick or treaters (they may be hard to see in their costume) as they run between cars to get to the next house for their treat. Remember to always ride safe!

FROM YOUR PA DISTRICT EDUCATOR… Chuch & Evelyn Stone

Hi Folks:

The fall colors are some of the most beautiful scenery you will see during the remainder of the riding season. With the cold weather soon moving in I think that most of us will start thinking of what we have to do to prepare the wings for winter storage. Something you should consider doing before putting the wing away for the season is a T-CLOCK inspection. TIRES: Your tires may need to be replaced. Now would be the time to start this project rather than waiting for the spring riding season to start. CLUTCH: Check the clutch and brake reservoirs. Are they low in fluid or has the fluid turned a very dark color? If they have you should change both the clutch and brake fluid now. LUBRICANTS: How long has it been since you changed your anti-freeze. Remember your anti-freeze has been working hard to keep your engine cool and to lubricate your water pump. MAKE SURE you use the proper anti-freeze when changing, as not all types of anti-freeze will work in your Wing.

OIL: You may wait until spring to change your oil but I personally do not think it is a good idea to leave the old oil in the engine over the winter because it contains acids as well as old oil has a tendency to turn to sludge as it sets and the dirt sinks to the bottom of the engine case. CABLES & CONTROLS: You should check your throttle and choke cables for smooth operation. Make sure the throttle returns with a snap and to an idle when released. The choke, if equipped, also needs to work smoothly and to return to the open position. KICKSTAND: Does your kickstand have free movement and a good spring to pull it up? Look at the switches and check the operation with the switch on. Check the center stand’s return spring for smooth operation. In addition to the T-Clock inspection, you should check the battery terminals and make sure they are clean and the water level in the battery is at the proper level. If you are not going to run your motorcycle at least once a month during storage, you should put the battery tender on to keep the level of charge up to the maximum level. Last but not least you should clean up the wing, wax it and cover it for the winter storage season to protect it from dust.

If you take the above precautions, you should be ready to go in the spring and have an enjoyable riding season having done your preparation during the winter season while the bike is being stored. Ride Safe and Ride Proud.
