Nightingale House Hospice Newsletter 2009

Page 2

Once again I am delighted to welcome you to our newsletter. I would like to say a big thank you to all of our supporters, who have again helped us to maintain our vital services to all our patients and families. Whether you have walked, run, climbed, jumped, “gone yellow”, sang or cooked to support us we are very grateful for your support. So many of you fi nd such original and amazing ways to help and support us and without your kindness the Hospice would not exist.

Throughout this newsletter, you will fi nd information about the numerous events and activities that you can be involved in. There is also an insight into the work of our social workers and the child bereavement programme “ReLease”, which is just one of the specialist services we offer. As many of you will know we are reliant upon our army of volunteers to support our work both within the hospice in practical ways such as manning our reception desk, counting money and helping on the wards and in the kitchens as well as volunteering at the many fundraising events we have. However, as a charity we also have a Board of Trustees who ensue that the hospice is run properly and that we adhere to the relevant laws and guidelines. In this edition of the newsletter we will introduce you to the work of the trustees and to the fi ve newly appointed trustees to our existing board.

You will have seen recent articles in the local press regarding the distribution of the latest round of

Welsh Assembly Hospice Funding. From the £2.1 million funding set aside for hospices across Wales, Nightingale House received only £60,000. Whilst of course, we are very grateful for this amount, it is nowhere near as much as other hospices have received. Again I would question the transparency of the system being adopted and the lack of dialogue prior to any decisions being made which makes it impossible to have any input into the funding process. Yes, I do believe that Nightingale House is being penalised because we offer a more advanced and developed service package, and the allocation of funds is being used to bring the services other hospices offer up to our level. We will continue to make our case but with out a platform to do this it will continue to be an up hill struggle.

This year it will cost £2.55 million to run Nightingale House Hospice and only 18% of this will come from statutory government sources. We therefore rely on the generosity of you, our supporters, and local community to raise the remaining £2.2 million. Please accept my thanks on behalf of everyone here at the hospice for your continued support and generosity and I look forward to meeting you at one of our many forthcoming events.

Charity trustees are the people who serve on the governing body of a charity usually called the Board and are legally responsible for the administration of a charity and ensuring that it fulfi lls its aims and objectives. These objectives are in practice achieved through a mixture of trustee committees and delegating responsibilities to a management team.. A Board of Trustees needs to have members with varied skills and experience to ensure the charity is managed professionally and within the Charity Commission Guidelines. Over time the individual membership of the Board changes as some trustees retire or additional skills are required to support the work of the Board.

I would like to introduce you to our most recently appointed trustees who will use their experience and knowledge to help guide Nightingale House Hospice.

Andrew MorseIn an organisation such as Nightingale House Hospice volunteers take on many varied roles – one such role is that of Trustee.

Andrew is a Chartered Accountant and is currently the Managing Director of Priory Practice Limited based in Chester and Birkenhead he employs a staff of 35. His Company has a wide range of clients from individuals to large companies.

Andrew brings to Nightingale House a high level of professional fi nancial and business skills. Andrew lives in Llay and plays tennis, golf and is a keen skier.

Release: The Hospice’s Child Bereavement Programme

Page 4

David’s Story...David was 10 years old when his Dad died in a road traffi c accident. David found it very diffi cult to talk about what had happened. After several months he was referred to Release by his school, with total support from his Mum and siblings. David was unsure about how to start talking about his Dad. He had found that by pretending nothing had happened, he could cope. This strategy however was beginning to cause him more distress.

David wanted things at school to be normal, so he didn’t really say how he was feeling. In some lessons he found it very hard to concentrate.

David started his bereavement support, and after about four sessions, he began to understand how he had been feeling and that his feelings were normal and would last a long time. He began to share more of his thoughts with his Mum and siblings and David produced a wonderful memory book about his Dad. This helped him to remember the good times and to make sense of the accident and the days that followed.

David found it helpful to go to his Dad’s grave, he also wrote a letter to his Dad to tell him how he had been feeling.

David and his family attended the Camelot trip and one of our Memory days. He gained comfort from being with other children and families who have experienced bereavement. David began to feel stronger and knew how to manage his feelings on bad days.

He is now in his secondary school, and doing well. David and his family know that if they need any further support, we keep an open door policy. The name of this patient has been changed.

An insight into...

The “Release” Programme for bereaved children developed by Nightingale House Hospice social workers has been used as a template for the bereavement service offered to children by other hospice care providers in North Wales. The programme has been operational since 1996. The Hospice works closely with other North Wales hospices to coordinate care to bereaved children and families.

The Programme is not exclusively for children who have lost a family member at the Hospice. “We provide this service to any child in our area who has suffered bereavement, not necessarily as a result of a parent or close relative or friend dying from cancer. We have worked very closely with our local schools and social services to ensure that this service is available to children and their families across a wide area in North East Wales and the borders. In 2000 we developed a Bereavement Policy with Wrexham schools to assist teaching staff to support children in their school.” said Anna Perkin, Senior Social Worker, Nightingale House Hospice.

When a child is referred to Release, the objective is to support the child and family as they grieve.

“We talk through what has happened with the child and all of the changes that have happened to them and their family as a consequence. Children are provided with the opportunity and time to make a memory book or memory stone about the person who has died.”

“Day trips and group activities to places such as Camelot are organised for children and their families to enjoy themselves, forget their worries, have fun and interact with other children who going through a similar situation.”

These services are invaluable however their continued provision relies heavily upon donations and fundraising activities of the local community who support the hospice. To run a child bereavement session it costs the Hospice on average £52.

See the Hospice Virtual Catolgue online for more information.

Message from the Director of Nursing

In this edition of the newsletter I want to share with you some of the amazing things I see around the hospice on a daily basis all made possible because of teamwork.

Our day care volunteers and staff continue to support patients to achieve the most amazing things, from wood carving and watercolour painting, to enjoying the social opportunities of a last minute excursion out for lunch, being able to act on impulse when so many of the activities and appointments they undertake have to be planned in advance.

Our in-patient staff, catering staff, chaplaincy team and fundraising team pulling out all the stops to source snacks and champagne at short notice to make an emotional afternoon special for a patient and family on the in-patient unit.

Throughout the hospice I see extraordinary things happen every day, because the team have a shared vision and commitment to making the services and care we provide the best we can for each individual and family.

You are part of this team, your support, your fundraising makes our daily work possible, and I can only repeat my thanks to all the team for making it possible.

Together EveryoneAchieves More.

VolunteersThe summer months have been especially busy for volunteers. 200 volunteers helped to facilitate this years Ladies Midnight Walk with a further 55 volunteers helping at the Summer Fair in June. These two events alone contributed 1200 volunteer hours.

We have also welcomed a local company JH Austin to the Hospice for the fi rst time. The group contributed a total of 72hrs decorating a room on the Inpatient Unit, cleaning windows and general

grounds maintenance. We are very grateful and are keen to encourage other local employers to volunteer in specifi cally designed projects.

Finally we would like to send our best wishes and thanks to all our younger volunteers who will be leaving in September to pursue university places and careers all over the country.

Hopefully you will take a piece of Nightingale House Hospice with you wherever you go.JH Auston lend a hand

Kate Strange travels from Worcester to volunteer on reception for the week

There are many ways you can support the Hospice as a volunteer. It doesn’t have to be a regular weekly commitment. We need volunteers to help us with street collections/supermarket bag packs/manning Santa’s Grotto at Bellis Garden Centre and at events such as the Summer Fair.

A recent bag pack at Sainsbury’s Supermarket raised £2000 in one day. We have a further bag pack booked for Saturday 19th December and will need around 200 volunteers for the day. We hope to raise in excess of £4000. If you can spare an hour or two

to help please contact Val Connolly: 01978 316811

Our lives and circumstances change, we get married, divorced, move home, have children or grandchildren. Any of these “life changing” situations can make us refl ect on what we want to happen to our estate and loved ones once we are no longer here. Writing a will is something that so

many people put off, however during “Make a Will Week” which runs from 26th to 30th October 2009 Nightingale House Hospice has arranged for a panel of local solicitors to write a standard will completely free in return for a donation to the hospice. The value of the donation is up to you, for guidance a basic single Will would cost around £70, or £120 for a married couple.

The conductor/choir master for the day is Mervyn Cousins, Musical Director for Cantorian Rhos and Executive Director for the International Llangollen Music Eisteddfod. The day starts at 1pm with a choral workshop until 4pm. The evening concert will start at 7.30pm in front of a paying audience. If Messiah isn’t your thing, you can still sing… For the month of October we are asking our supporters to organize their own “Voices for Hospice” event.
