Presidential Oaks was
named a Patriotic Employer
by the National Committee
for Employer Support of the
Guard and Reserve
(ESGR). Anne Purington,
Chief Executive Officer,
accepted the award “on
behalf of all the employees
who step up to the plate”.
It was 2002 when Sargent
Schofield joined Presiden-
tial Oaks as a Culinary Ser-
vices team member. In
2004, Kevin was activated
and off to Iran he went. But,
Presidential Oaks stayed in
touch, sending him “care
packages” that included zip
ties, sharpie markers, and,
of course, M&M’s.
Private First Class Keith
Hervieux , also a Culinary
Services team member,
joined us in 2002.
Staff Sargent Kevin
Schofield and Private First
Class Keith Hervieux were
deployed to New Orleans

Spending time with friends
and family is important to
our very being.
Presidential Oaks was the
first to recognize this when
they began their monthly
invitations to all the friends
and family of Retirement
Living residents last year !
Since then, Presidential
Oaks Retirement has
hosted over 350 guests at
these special celebrations.
Whether it’s a pre-holiday

Bowling is fun.
Bowling helps strengthen muscles in wrist and hands, which can reduce fractures. It burns calories, improves co-ordination, and increases range of motion in the shoul-
ders and wrists.
Bowling also improves bal-ance and can reduce the risk

of falls—the leading cause of
hospitalizations in seniors.
Bowling is also good for the soul. Bowling Leagues re-duce loneliness and isola-tion, and create camaraderie
and a sense of belonging.
The fact is anyone (really anyone) can bowl —
especially Wii Bowling.

Walking is, by far, the best
thing you can do for your
body. The human body was
made to walk. Walking can
stimulate circulation, reduce
blood pressure and blood
sugar, and build bones. Is it
the new “wonder drug”?
Quite possibly. But, many of
us cut our walking by more
than 50% during the winter
months or stop walking all
together. Snow and ice can
make it difficult (and danger-
ous), and, quite frankly,
many don’t like the cold
weather.

History of Pumpkin 11:00am
Presidential Oaks presents a lively discussion and samples. The word pumpkin originated from the Greek word Pepõn, which means “large melon”. The word gradually morphed by French, English and then Americans into "pumpkin." The Pumpkin has long been used as both an essential food and a decoration.

Many Guard members from

History of Ornaments 11:00am
Christmas ornaments started in the 16th Century in Germany. Martin Luther decorated the first Christmas tree with can-dles to entertain children. Ger-man parents used the “pickle ornament” to judge the most
intelligent child.
Ornaments entered England in 1840 through Queen Victoria and her German Prince Albert. Ornaments reached America in 1880, when F.W Woolworth first sold imported glass orna-
ments.
World War I necessitated the production of cheaper orna-ments. The introduction of in-jection plastic molding was
used to figure tiny miniatures.
In 1973 the American Hallmark Company first launched the Keepsake Christmas orna-
ments.
