The two times you ______________________ call the police:

THE WRONG WAY

FOUR PROBLEMSTwo on one is “ganging up.”1

If we aren’t “fighting fair” reciprocity says that he doesn’t have to fight fair either!

THE RESEARCH“[A]n increase in the number of officers [was a] consistent predictor of… suspect force.

[T]he presence of additional officers might increase the likelihood of conflict.”The Phoenix Project: Predictors of Suspect Use of Force

They probably have different strategies.2People can tell when staff are not on the same page… & some will use it against you.

Three people in conflict is worse than two.3LouderMore chaoticMore conflict (which lowers empathy and problem-solving skills)

The wrong person will seize control.4If she is good at de-escalation and he is a hot-head, who will seize control?

The hot-head! EVERY TIME!

The two times you ______________________ call the police:

THE RIGHT WAYThe right way is to have two different and

distinct roles for the staff members:

LEAD BACKUP

1) Deal with the problematic individual.

1) Provide emotional support tocoworker through presence.

2) Call the police if lead staffmember asks you to.

3) Keep other people from interfering.

The key, though, is where the backup staff member stands. The backup should be 8-10 feet away.

Why?

WHERE TO STAND• 8-10 feet away.• Where both people can see you, if possible.• Do not hide.

ADVANCED TECHNIQUESWhen should you provide backup to a coworker?1

2 Who should be lead and who should be backup?

You can “tag out”3

Backup (done right) is the single greatest training tool you have at your disposal.

• Less experienced staff can practice (with someone there to help if necessary).

• Less experienced staff get front row seats to watch more experienced staff. - OR -

RULE Less experienced staff should handle every situation they are capable of handling.

Backup is like tag-team style wrestling: You can tag out, but only one person in the ring at a time.

Be careful of your body language when you are backup4Remember: Our bodies talk on our behalf

> If you aren’t the right person, “tag out.”> If your coworker is escalating the situation, you can “tag in.”

• If the situation is not too bad, the less experienced staff should be lead.• If the situation could get really bad (or dangerous), the more experienced staff

should be lead.RULE

You know what to do! EXERCISE 2

Should I provide backup? Why?

Where should I stand?

Should I talk to him?

Should I tag in?

Should I call the police?

Should I do anything about the kid?

You are ready! The force is strong with you.
