Tale – OF THE –

TunaEvery year the Hinda Institute provides Kosher for Passover food for

all Jewish inmates in the State of Illinois. Each inmate is given enough food to last the entire week.

Because of Illinois Department of Corrections’ regulations, macaroons must be transferred into bags from their cans, and the tuna fish has to be in pouches and not cans. The tuna fish, along with other Passover food, is provided by the Maot Chitim committee of Chicago.

This year, the order was made as usual, Rabbi Scheiman arranged for volunteers to transfer the macaroons, and plans were set to leave early Sunday morning to begin transporting the food to the inmates. Leibel Scheiman would be accompanying his father to deliver the food, seder plates and Matza.

But when Rabbi Scheiman went to pick up the food from Maot Chitim on Thursday, the tuna was not on the truck. It was billed, but seemed to never have been loaded.

He returned the following day, in the hopes that it had made the next delivery, but it was not on the truck on Friday either. Saturday night, there still was no tuna.

As a prime protein source for the week of Passover, this was no small issue!

At that point, the director of Maot Chitim, Joellyn Stoliar, told Rabbi

The fifth Yahrtzeit of Mrs. Hindy Scheiman

falls out this year on May 12th.

The Hinda Institute was named in her memory, as she devoted herself to the cause of Jewish inmates

and their families.

To make a donation in her memory, please indicate that on the donation card

on the back page.

Scheiman to buy tuna off the shelves. Even though he cleared off the shelves at the local stores, it still did not add up to the 1300 tuna packs that he needed.

But a series of small miracles saved Passover this year!

As part of the Passover food, 140 salamis were ordered and billed. Instead of the 140, they were some-how given 190 salamis. That would make up somewhat for the missing tuna. Still nobody knows how the ex-tra salamis ended up on the truck.

Rabbi Scheiman and Leibel left on Sunday as planned and hoped

everything would work out for the best.

And the story didn’t end there. There was a student returning to SIU–Carbondale after spring break. He asked Rabbi Mendel Scheiman if there was anything he could bring from Chicago.

So Rabbi Scheiman contacted Joellyn again to see if the tuna had turned up. It hadn’t, but she went to all the local stores, bought whatever was in stock and made arrangements to give it to the SIU student. Rabbi Mendel was able to distribute those tuna pouches before Passover to the

prisons in Southern Illinois. In all the years that the Hinda

Institute delivered Passover food to Illinois prisons, this is the first time that an order did not come in on time. But as every year, the inmates were not left to go hungry all week.

Much of the credit goes to Maot Chitim of Chicago, who have been helping provide food to Jewish in-mates for as long as the Hinda Institute and its forerunner JPAF have been around.

A very big thank you to Joellyn and Maot Chitim for going above and beyond their usual excellent work!

Tale of the Tuna, continued

From Our Mailbox

“Thank you so much for coming to our house. Our discussion was sad, but it was very spiritual. You made me feel much better by convincing me that my son knew we were there at the end. I am seeing a grief counselor and slowly working my way through the worst feelings.

My husband and I want to thank you for the concern and effort you showed our son through the years. There were never many people he actually respected, but he recognized that you are someone very special. You and your sons give of yourselves to those who most of society have forgotten and ignored. It takes a special person to find the good in people who struggle to find the good in themselves. You are a holy person. We would like to keep in touch with you and serve as emotional support to other families in the future.”

We recently received a very moving letter from the family of a client who unfortunately passed away at a young age.

A letter from an inmate:

“I would first like to thank you. Your visit was inspirational. I feel for lack of a better word, “recharged”. I’m sorry if I took up too much time with my inquiries; if that was an issue, I will be more considerate in the future.

But thank you for your answers, I have more questions, but I realize our time is precious.

I appeal to G-d for grace, mercy and to be of service to Him. I pray for you and I thank you.”

Rabbi Scheiman had a very busy winter.

He spent a Shabbat in South Bend, Indiana at the Midwest Torah Center as the scholar-in-residence. He spoke Friday night and twice on Shabbos day. There was a nice crowd present, and they were very interested in the work of the Hinda Institute.

The next stop was sunny Florida, where Rabbi Scheiman spoke at dif-ferent communities in South Florida. He gave talks at homes and syna-gogues in Hallandale, Hollywood, and

Inverrar y. He also used the op-portunity to meet with former clients who have successfully re-entered society.

If you would like Rabbi Scheiman to speak to your group about the fascinating work of the Hinda Institute, contact him at 847 334-1770.
