  • Snacks: Pretzels, either crescent rolled pretzels or pretzel chips.

Many years ago, Christians would cross their arms and touch each shoulder with their opposite hands when they prayed. A pretzel (when turned upside down) is designed to

look like arms crossed in prayer.

    Ingredients

1/4 cup spicy brown mustard1/4 cup apricot preserves1 can (8 oz) Pillsbury refrigerated Crescent Dough Sheet1 tablespoon butter or margarine, melted1/2 teaspoon kosher (coarse) salt

1 Heat oven to 375F. Spray large cookie sheet with cooking spray. In small bowl, mix mustard and apricot preserves; set aside. 2 Unroll dough on work surface; press into 12x8-inch rectangle. Cut crosswise into 16 (8-inch) strips; roll each into 11-inch rope. To shape pretzel, shape rope into a circle, overlapping dough about 2 inches from each end, leaving ends free. Take 1 end in each hand; twist once at point where dough overlaps. Lift ends over opposite side of circle. Brush each with melted butter. Sprinkle with salt. Place on cookie sheet. 3 Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from cookie sheet. Serve warm with mustard mixture.

  • GUESS WHAT YOU HEAR?Children guess which sounds are made by different items, and learn that Jesus knows exactly who we are when we pray.

    TOPICS:Listening, Prayer

MATERIALS:Whistle, Harmonica, Stapler, Bell, Baby rattleAny other familiar item that makes a nice sound

DURATION:Approximately 10 minutesPREPARATION:Before class, find five or six familiar items that make an identifiable sound, such as the examples above. Put all of these items into a large paper bag.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:You will go before the class, and have everyone close their eyes as you remove one item at a time from the bag, and make a noise with it. (You will also want to turn your back to the class, and hide the item you are using as best as possible so kids who are peeking will not see it.) After making the noise, place the item back into the bag, and then let the kids open their eyes. Then ask them if they know what the item was by the sound they heard. Let them know if they were right or wrong before going to the next item in the bag.

WHAT YOU WILL SAY:Sometimes we can tell what something is just by the sound it makes. At other times, just hearing the sound is not enough. We need to see it also. But when we pray, we don't need to worry about how we sound, or if God will hear us. He will know who it is, because Jesus takes our prayers to the Father. We can pray and be sure that God will hear and answer our prayers.

  • GOD CAN HEAR METalking with God is easy!

    TOPICS:Prayer

MATERIALS:2 Cans or paper cupsSmall nail and hammerLong piece of string

DURATION:Approximately 7 minutesPREPARATION:Before class use the small nail and hammer to punch a hole in the bottom of each can or paper cup. The hole should be in the center. Push the string through the hole in the first can and tie a knot at the end of the string so that it cannot pull through the hole in the can. Repeat this process for the second can.

WHAT YOU WILL SAY:Begin by asking the children to name ways in which we can communicate over long distances. (The list may include letter, e-mail, phone) Tell the children that long ago people used to send messages over something called a telegraph. A telegraph was a machine that would send a special code across wires. Telegraphs sent messages from one city to another.

Say, "I'll demonstrate this for you, but I need a volunteer to help me." Once you have selected your helper, ask the child to take one of the cans and walk away from you until the string is tight. Have the child hold the can up to their ear; let them know that you are going to pull the string taunt so they need to have a good grip on the can. Once the child has the can up to his or her ear, whisper, "God loves you very much." into your can. The child should be able to hear the message loud and clear, if not, try repeating the message a bit louder.

Over the years, things have certainly changed. We went from the telegraphs to telephones and from telephones to cell phones. We can now call someone we know just about any place in the world and the devices we use do not have to be connected by wires.

Boys and girls did you know that there is even a better way to communicate? It is called prayer. Prayer is the most powerful form of communication we have. When we pray, we talk directly to God. Prayer is the prefect way to communicate with God. Prayer will never change, it's the same today as it was hundred or thousands of years ago. We can talk to God anytime or any place by simply praying to Him.

  • God hears my prayersStuff you need: 4 buckets and 4 beanbags for every 8 10 children, masking or painters tape, volunteers to retrieve the beanbagsPreparation: Set up a beanbag toss; mark a throwing line with tape, and then set the four buckets one after the other, from closest to furthest away.Have the children line up and play the game one at a time. They can move up and keep trying until they get all the beanbags into the buckets. When everyone has had a turn, say, Its fun to toss beanbags, isnt it? Sometimes we get the beanbag in the bucket, and sometimes we dont! Thats not true of God and prayer. Its not that sometimes he hears us and sometimes he doesnt. He hears our prayers every single time we pray! Its as if youre getting the beanbag in the bucket every single time! Lets say together, God always hears my prayers!

  • Focus on prayerStuff you need: a few bottles of bubbles and a few volunteers to blow them; a pair of mittens or socks for each child (Check dollar or discount stores or send home a note a week or two in advance, asking children to bring an extra pair of mittens or socks for a game.)Have children put the mittens or socks on their hands. Have a few different volunteers stand in different areas of the room and blow bubbles. Have the children try to catch, and not pop, the bubbles. Regardless of the result, praise their efforts. After youve played awhile, ask the following questions: Did you catch a bubble? Was it easy or hard? It was hard, wasnt it? You really had to focus, didnt you? You really had to pay attention to what you were doing. Butit was also a lot of fun!Say, The same is true for prayer. When you pray, you really need to focus and pay attentionto what you are doing. A great way to do that is by closing your eyes. (Have children try it.) This keeps you from getting distracted by things around you. Another great way to focus on prayer is to fold your hands in your lap. (Have children try it.) That way you wont be tempted to fidget and play with something. Just as you had to focus and pay attention to catch a bubble, you need to focus and pay attention in order to talk to and listen to God. And prayer is also a lot of funits wonderful to be able to talk to God!
