happens. The next steps involves the combing, which also brings the loose fibres back into one long flock, which is rolled into artistic circles, enraptured in bins for transportation to the next building within the facto-ry. Everywhere you can find water sprinklers in the air, which keep the air moist and the fine dusty particles from the hemp fibre from flying everywhere.
Now the fibre needs to undergo another process on vibration machines, which do the pre-work to combing the fibre and also helping to loosen it up for full drying. This again is done by hand mostly from women. The sharp metal arms, which vibrate to loosen the fibre can’t be underestimated in strength and thus it is a very demanding work to not get hurt in the process. Now the dried and precombed hemp fibre is packed up to be transported into the next hall of the factory, where the end process of combing and producing the yarn

The Story
“Through my camera lens, I see our changing climate. Along the way, I also meet unusual suspects who come up with equally unusual solutions, making me reconsider my view on the world, and rethink and help others get rid of all the misconceptions that I, too, once had about hemp.

Dölsach, East Tyrol, Austria
Hemp fields are slowly reintroduced into the agricultural environment of the Alps. Tyrol, as many of the Alpine rural regions is a rather con-servative location. Agricultural practice and animal farming are based on long traditions, which have been adapted to fit the alpine region. The belief that things need to be done the same way they were always done, is predominant. 80 years of hemp prohibition has erased the knowledge about this plant being part of the alpine lifestyle from the minds of people and it is only the very aged people that still remember how they had special houses for the women to break the hemp and flax stems and extract the fibre, as well as how winters were spend in the only heated room of the farm in community and mostly the women were operating the spinning wheels to make hep and flax yarn, while the men were operating the looms to weave cloth. Yet, reintegrating hemp into the alpine regions today bears a big potential for green agriculture, soil health, future building material and the start of circular economies.
