A MESSAGE FROM MONSIGNOR BROCKMAN

Growing in Faith, Building Together: Our Greatly Needed Parish Center – A pleasure to begin with you, our final

steps in making our long-needed Parish Center, a reality, having suspended our efforts with the onset on COVID, but now set to resume. I am very pleased to report that to date we have raised $5.2M towards our goal of $6.0M on a total construction cost of $8.2M – a great accomplishment, and tremendous testament to

the generosity of our parishioners and also our parish Pastoral Council, parish volunteers and Pastoral Staff, who coordinated the effort, all without any use of funding development consultants.

The need is abundantly clear. Not all parish ministry can be done virtually, and so for in-person meeting, we are simply do not have enough in number or appropriately-sized meeting spaces on our Sacred Heart Cam-pus and zero meeting places on our Cathedral campus; there is simply no place to go. You will see all this in

detail in the series of short videos, which have and will be posted over the course of days on our YouTube channel, linked on our Facebook pages, linked from our website, and in the E-Newsletter, beginning with my intro video.

Our challenge – That the $5.2M raised thus far, was given by only by 10% of our registered parishioners. With

over 4000 registered families in our parish, clearly that is a data point on which we can do much better – in

getting to our goal and bridging the delta of $800K towards that end or even better, if we raise over $800K, reducing the planned $2.2M 15-year mortgage to a lesser amount. Remember, no gift is too small, though for such projects, great sacrifice is needed to achieve great ends.

Prayerful Consideration and Making the Commitment – Turn to Our Lord regarding then what that sacrifice

may be for you and your family – not replacing your regular giving and returning thanks to Our Lord for His

goodness to you, but rather, a sacrifice, meaning what is above the regular of what you do to support the mis-sion of Christ in and through our great Cathedral parish. This weekend then, join me in beginning to place in focus, a personal family commitment for us all to each do our part to achieve this goal of $800K. I will be re-viewing at each Mass options – written and electronic – of how to make a sacrificial gift and then asking each

of you to prayerfully consider that offering over the coming weeks.

Review the Rooms of the Parish Center Onsite – Through the hospitality of our parish Living Faith Committee

and the expertise of our parish Building Committee, join us after Mass next weekend on the site of where our Parish Center will be constructed, to see the layout of all the rooms that the Center will contain, marked out on the ground. A reception with refreshments, served and questions on the project welcomed will be held

onsite. Plan to join us!

The Road Ahead – With our funding development goal achieved or even acceded (reducing our long-term

mortgage obligations), we are planning to break ground in the Fall of 2022 or early 2023, if not sooner, with then about a year to complete the Parish Center construction. My great gratitude to those who have already contributed, also our Pastoral Council, our Finance Council, our Building Committee and our parish Pastoral

Staff for their great dedication and creativity to assist us in this project and to ensure that we do all possible to provide the space needed for our continued parish growth, not just in number, but most especially in Our Lord.

Lectio Divina Video Series Return – As we did during the height of Covid, and now returning as part of our

adult formation opportunities, will be our weekly video series on prayer over the readings for the coming Sun-

day. It is an important part of weekly prayer to do so and these weekly installments will make it easy. They will be done by myself, Fr. Matthew, Fr. Juan Andres, Deacon Mike Alig and Deacon Juan Banda – will help us fo-cus our reflection on the Word as well in prep for preaching. We are putting the schedule together and it is my hope that we can begin posting these soon, certainly in the next month. More on this to come in my col-

umn, including more detail from our great Catholic spiritual store house on the ancient prayer practice of Lec-tio Divina.

Annual Celebration of the White Mass – With our annual celebration of the Red Mass last week at Sacred

Heart, honoring and praying for all those who labor in the legal profession and those who serve in govern-ment, we turn our attention to another vocation we honor and pray for as well, usually in the month of Octo-

ber and associated with the feast of Saint Luke: those who serve as medical professionals. Plan to join us on Sunday, October 31st at the 10:00 am Mass, as Bishop Luis Rafael will be with us as we honor and pray over these who serve our health care and to whom we owe such great gratitude for their heroic service during this last year and a half. More to come.

SEP 22ND - OCT 31ST We will pray the rosary together outside of the Ra-

leigh abortion clinic. Parishioner Susan Griffin re-marks: “Giving prayerful witness to the sanctity of life is what the 40 Days for Life Vigil is all about. It offers a

special opportunity for me to live out my Catholic faith in support of human life and dignity. And what can be more critical in our culture today than to de-fend the right to life for unborn children?”

Go to www.40daysforlife.com and click on 'Find a 40 days for life Vigil' on the homepage.

OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH

The Beginning and End of Life Min-istry will be hosting the Rite of

Blessing of the Child in the Womb

during all the masses the week-

end of October 23-24, Such a

blessing sustains the parents by imparting grace and comfort in a time of concern and need, unites the parish in prayer for the unborn

child, and fosters respect for hu-man life within society. The words of this blessing offer comfort to the

parents and prayers for the safe delivery of a healthy child who will be led faithfully in the ways of sal-

vation. So that we will have enough prayer cards

and gifts for expectant parents, please let us know if you plan to attend the mass in person that week-end, by emailing [email protected].

JUSTICE BULLETIN BOARD

May you see your children’s children. --Psalm 128: 6

Anyone who is a grandparent knows of the great blessing that this passage from Psalms conveys.

However, in the journey of the spiritual life, one comes to realize that all the children of the world are your offspring. Indeed, we are related to all life

as part of the mystery of God. In this Respect Life Month of the Church, we should ask ourselves: What life do I respect? Do I only re-spect the life of my immediate family and/or

friends? Does my respect only extend to my own self-interests? Do I only respect the life of the un-born? What about the mother of the unborn? What

about all the children born into a world of poverty? In North Carolina alone, we have higher rates of childhood poverty than two decades ago. As Gene Nichol put it so well in a recent editorial,

“Having one of the developed world’s highest child poverty rates is apparently, for us, un-worrisome. . .we behave as if having deplorable child poverty

levels is as natural as the morning sun. Who cares if we treat our kids worse than almost everyone else?. . .We can’t be bothered with the likes of poor and hungry babies” (“Seems NC can’t be bothered by

poor and hungry babies” News & Observer 8/16/21). What major anti-poverty initiatives do you actively support in the Church and/or in the larger

community? And what about our respect for the life of the natu-ral world? Pope Francis states clearly this respect in an address he made 12/4/14: “It bears repeating

that Creation is not a possession that we can dis-pose of as we please, much less a possession of only a few. Creation is a magnificent gift that God

has given us to care for and use to the benefit of all, with respect. I encourage you, therefore, to car-ry on in your commitment in order so that Creation may continue to be the patrimony of everyone, to

hand down in all its beauty to future generations.” Pope Francis has reminded us over and over in his encyclical Laudato Si, “that everything is connect-

ed.” Since everything is connected, then every-thing must be respected. May you see your children’s children, all children of the future, be born into a world filled with respect

for life. Visit:” The Web of Poverty” video at https://www.usccb.org/committees/catholic-campaign-

human-development Visit: “A World of One” video at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCQXKP5rhns

Barbara Molinari Quinby, MPS, Director Office of Human Life, Dignity, and Justice Ministries

In 2015, Pope Francis pub-lished his Encyclical Let-

ter Laudato Si’. The Letter is

named from the song of praise for creation by Saint Francis of Assisi. In this song, St. Francis proclaims God’s

goodness through all of crea-tion. In this encyclical Pope Francis lays out a biblical way

of viewing creation. At the core, Pope Francis is saying, “This is what it means to be

human.” He proclaims that we are not lord of all that

we see, but, rather, we are Stewards of God’s Crea-tion.

HNOJ is forming a Laudato Si Circle which is a group

that meets regularly to pray and reflect on how to

live out being stewards of God's creation. We will meet on-line at this moment once a month for one hour - the day and time will be determined by what suits best those joining. Respond to register, or for

questions email: [email protected]

KIDS’ CORNER

Sharing the Gospel

Parents need time to talk alone. Each child needs time to talk to his or her parents. Children need time to talk with each other. When you listen to each oth-

er, you listen to God. If you have a fight with some-one in your family, stop fighting and walk away. Take a deep breath. Pray for yourself and the per-son with whom you were fighting. When you go

back, God will help you make peace.

Prayer

Lord, help my mommy, daddy, brothers and sisters

get along with each other.

Activity

Draw a man and woman getting married.

©LPi
