  • Blossom: A Gardening Column by Ann Chandonnet Trees may seem able to take care of themselves. That's true if they are part of a forest, but when isolated on a property, things are different. Here are five basic rules of tree care. 1) Keep mulch away from trunk; mulch should go out 2 to 3 feet in a circle around trunk and be arranged in a volcano/tube cake shape. Mulch touching trunk will attract insects and precip-itate rot. When it touches the trunk, the branches above may perish. 2) When temp is over 40, water your trees. I did this all last winter, with excellent results. Don't soak them; maybe a quart each, less in the back yard --or wherever your water table is close to the surface. 3) In May, apply tree fertilizer sticks. (Available at Lowe's.) These can be hammered in again at end of August but not later in the year. 4) Best to prune in February when temp is below zero; then the tree does not lose sap. 5) Before buying a tree or shrub determine its ultimate height and width, and how far it should be spaced from other trees. In our subdivision, I can see one poor bush that grows to 12 feet both ways, trimmed to a 1.5-foot ball next to a front walk. Trees are a subject to take seriously. Each mature tree is said to add $5,000 value to your prop-

"On Saturday, Nov. 9, thousands of Scouts will deliver more than 1 million Scouting For Food bags throughout the St. Louis metro area, including Saint Charles. They will return one week later on Nov. 16 to collect the bags full of donated canned goods. By giving to Scouting For Food, residents are helping those in need right in their own community. The donated food is delivered to the Food bank for further distribution to over 500 hunger-relief programs and local agencies. When it comes to donations, canned fruits, vegetables, soups, tuna, chicken, and pasta sauce, and meals in a box, such as hamburger helper, are most needed. Last year, Scouting For Food gathered almost 2 million items of food which provided more than 1 million meals for the needy."

  • By: Gary Turner, Resident of HHR and Alderman, Ward I 1. The Board of Aldermen set the property tax rate for this December as follows: General Fund: New rate $0.4986 per $100 residential assessed value. (2018 was $0.5421) General Obligation Fund (Debt): $0.47 same as 2018. 2. Approved an agreement with County Road Board for design of new roadway Old Hwy N, Phase 2. 3. There will be a public open house on October 28, 4:30 - 6:30 pm at City Hall to review the proposed round about plan at the south intersection of LSL Blvd and I-70. 4. BOA awarded a design contract to Cole & Associates for Lake Saint Louis Blvd, Phase 3. Project is repaving from Blue Cove to the Bridge just north of the dam. 5. Design is nearly complete for Phase 2 which runs from Pleasant Meadows Drive to Blue Cove and the construction contract should be bid yet this year. Project is repaving and some curb work where a sight line problem exists. 6. Phase 1, as most of you know, is underway with curb and sidewalk work nearing comple-tion at the time of this writing. Repaving should be underway in October and completion, weather permitting, by December. 7. In October-November a by-pass road on Freymuth Lane, around the bridge to be replaced should be constructed for bridge work to be done this winter, with pavement widening next spring. This project is from Hawk Ridge circle to where Freymuth reaches the bottom of the hill where it starts to parallel I-64. 8. BOA approved an ordinance for use of St. Charles County transportation sales tax funds with city transportation sales tax for Reconstruction of LSL Blvd, Phase 3. 9. BOA approved agreement for County trans sales tax with city trans sales tax for construc-

tion of new roadway, Old Hwy N Phase 1. 10. The Board approved an escrow agreement with Ryan McCann for completion of grading,

installation and maintenance of erosion control measures and installation of site improve-ments related to construction of a 5,275 square foot animal hospital to be known as Hawk Ridge Animal Hospital in the Shoppes of Hawk Ridge. This will be on a currently vacant lot next to Murphy Oil and a car wash across from Wal-Mart on the east side.

    11. Please follow LSL Police request to pock-it and lock-it your car and house. There has been County wide an increase in stolen vehicles of which at least 75% were from cars un-locked with items in the car such as purses, purchased items, etc.

    12. Construction continues on a building next to First Bank of St. Charles on Technology Drive which will house in part an IMO's restaurant.

    13. Keep your fingers crossed, because the owners of The Meadows and the owners of Shoppes of Hawk Ridge are involved in some serious negotiations, if successful, will result in additional restaurants in the two shopping areas.

  • ADVISORY BOARD REPORT October 15, 2019 The September financials were not ready yet so they will be reviewed and posted on the web-site as soon as read and approved by the Advisors. John will check with McBride Homes to see if he can get the placement of the fence between the 2 properties scheduled. Some dead tree removal was done on 10/16 and 10/17. There are more that need to come down so they will be scheduled in the spring. The sprinkler intake repair in the lake is still in the works. The Rules & Regulations committee is meeting weekly and working diligently to get this ac-complished in a timely manner. The next Town Hall meeting was scheduled for December 9th at 6:30. The election process for a new advisor will start October 21st. Jim Biglin’s term expires Dec. 31st. The results will be announced at the Town Hall meeting. Again a reminder that the trees removed on common ground will not be replaced. If a home-owner wants to plant another tree they may do so after signing a common ground agreement. The last scheduled mow will take place on October 28th. No mowing will be done on 10/21. We will evaluate if additional mows are needed in Nov. Residents have expressed concern about the lighting in the parking lot on the Pigeon Dr side. We are going to ask Cuivre River Electric if they will assist HHR in getting additional lighting installed. The pool maintenance bids were reviewed and it was decided to stay with Westport pools. Westport pools will be doing the pool resurfacing, new tile and caulking which will be com-pleted before the pool opens next May. We are aiming to have the acoustic panels for the ballroom installed before the Christmas tea. Golf course projects were discussed for next year and some will be put in the budget. The morning to decorate the clubhouse for Christmas will be Dec. 3rd. The most time was spent considering items to be put in the budget for next year. The next meeting will be November 19th at 10:00am.

HHR Holiday Traditions HHR has several long standing and some new traditions to recognize the upcoming holidays. We hope you will participate. Feel free to make suggestions for new traditions too! Holiday Decorating—12/03 9:30 am— Please come help us decorate the clubhouse. Each new HHR family is invited to hang an ornament on our tree (anytime during the holiday season). We recommend a non-breakable orna-ment with your family name and the year you moved to HHR written on the ornament. This year, we are in special need of some strong folks to help us with our huge tree. Holiday Luminaries On Christmas Eve at 4:30 pm, residents put out Luminaries to light up the neighborhood. The luminaries are made from milk jugs. More details will follow in the December Putterings, but you can start saving your gallon milk jugs now. We recommend special candles that can be purchased at the clubhouse for $1 each, beginning December 2.

  • What’s New Around the Neighborhood

Library Update We are very pleased to have such an extensive library for the Heritage of Hawk Ridge community. Thanks to all of you for your generous book donations. We are adding a new feature to our HHR library: a Recommend and Review Section. As you read the books from the library, please take a few minutes to write a recommendation or a brief review of a book you especially enjoyed. Paper and pens are in a labeled drawer near the corner closet. Display your recommendation/review on the new library bulletin board between the windows, and place your book on top of the white bookcase for others to enjoy.
