sir­barton­won­america’s­first­triplecrown­ one­ hundred­ years­ ago­ in­ 1919,many­decades­before­I­became­a­fan­of­thesport,­especially­of­this­elite­achievement.his­historic­run­through­our­classic­raceswere­not­known­as­the­triple­crown­untillater,­ taking­ on­ that­ moniker­ within­ adecade­of­his­wins.­by­ the­ time­I­camealong,­ten­horses­had­joined­him­in­com-pleting­that­feat,­sealing­their­iconic­statusamong­the­great­names­that­have­wowedfans­of­horse­racing­for­more­than­a­cen-tury.­Multiple­books­on­the­triple­crowngrace­my­bookshelves,­but­any­book­onthese­races­devotes­only­a­chapter­to­eachwinner,­encapsulating­their­stories­in­onlya­few­pages.­since­space­is­at­a­premium,I­as­a­reader­always­suspected­there­wasmore­to­each­story.this­was­especially­ the­case­with­sir

barton.­over­and­over,­I­read­the­same­fewdetails:­shipped­to­louisville­to­serve­asthe­ rabbit­ for­ his­ stablemate,­ broke­ hismaiden­in­the­Kentucky­Derby,­went­on­towin­ the­ Preakness­ and­ the­ belmont­ tocomplete­ the­ first­ triple­ crown,­ lost­ amatch­race­to­Man­o’­war,­and­then­died­inobscurity.­as­a­researcher,­trained­to­un-cover­all­of­the­details,­this­pat­narrative

begged­for­deeper­consideration.­as­a­rac-ing­fan­who­fell­in­love­with­the­sport­viathe­triple­crown,­I­found­the­call­to­workon­this­segment­of­the­history­of­horse­rac-ing,­and­to­contribute­to­its­body­of­knowl-edge,­irresistible.­as­ I­ researched­ sir­ barton’s­ life,­ I

found­out­that­the­story­of­this­champion,that­I­thought­I­knew,­is­a­powerful­lessonof­ how­ easily­ inaccuracies­ and­ impres-sions­can­be­introduced­into­the­historicalrecord­and­obscure­the­impact­of­a­signif-icant­contributor­to­a­sport.­

Reading between the Lines

I­ became­ a­ horse­ racing­ fan­ in­ fifthgrade,­after­a­teacher­read­us­the­first­bookin­the­Black Stallion series.­I­sought­re-sources­ for­ learning­ more,­ combingthrough­libraries­for­books­and,­in­this­pre-Internet­era,­writing­letters­to­racing­insti-

tutions.­I­learned­how­to­ask­questions­andhow­to­find­information,­skills­that­laterhelped­me­as­a­writer.­I­always­aspired­towork­in­the­industry­in­some­way,­but­thelimitations­of­geography­meant­that­roleeluded­me­until­2013.­with­the­100th­anniversary­of­the­triple

crown­approaching,­I­wanted­find­a­bookabout­sir­barton,­a­book­that­would­tellthe­story­behind­the­first­triple­crown,­butfound­that­only­a­memoir­called­Boots and

Saddles covered­that­time,­and­even­thatheld­ only­ a­ few­ pages­ about­ this­mile-stone.­with­an­eye­toward­the­deadline­of2019­and­the­100th­anniversary,­I­decidedthat­ my­ background­ in­ writing­ and­ re-search­gave­me­the­skills­necessary­to­un-dertake­a­book­about­sir­barton’s­career.­Iembarked­on­a­five-year­journey­throughlibraries,­both­digital­and­hard­copy,­and­amultitude­of­drafts­and­edits­to­create­thefirst­book­to­tell­sir­barton’s­story­in­full.the­goal­was­to­reexamine­what­historysays­about­sir­barton­and­to­share­the­truestory­behind­the­birth­of­the­triple­crown,a­series­of­races­that­dominates­horse­rac-ing­from­breeding­to­selling­to­scheduling–­ the­ dream­ of­many­ a­ breeder,­ owner,trainer,­and­jockey.­

Reconsidering Sir barton

the­best­books­about­racing’s­champi-ons­not­only­highlight­the­races,­but­alsobring­the­figures­involved­back­to­life.­Sir

Barton and the Making of the Triple

Crown builds­on­the­story­we­know­andadds­more­depth,­balancing­the­facts­withthose­details­that­draw­readers­in.­I­beganwith­sir­barton’s­milestones­and­then­ex-plored­all­of­the­races­in­between.­I­alsowove­in­the­people­behind­it­all:­John­e.Madden,­his­breeder­and­legendary­figurein­ the­ early­ 20th­ century;­ commanderJ.K.l.­ross,­his­owner­during­his­racingcareer,­a­sportsman­and­philanthropist­on­amission­to­dominate­racing;­h.G.­bedwell,his­trainer­whose­reputation­as­a­completehorseman­battled­with­rumors­about­hismethods;­and­jockeys­Johnny­loftus,­earlsande,­and­carroll­shilling­–­all­figureswho­touched­sir­barton­during­their­hallof­fame­careers.­these­people­impact­thehorse’s­ story­ throughout,­ and­ all­ con-tribute­to­his­ultimate­status­in­racing­inone­way­or­another.­I­shared­as­much­oftheir­story­as­possible,­given­the­limita-tions­of­space­inherent­in­any­book.I­also­worked­to­undo­those­inaccura-

cies­and­impressions­that­had­creeped­intosir­barton’s­story­and­to­correct­them.­no,he­was­not­the­rabbit­for­the­1919­Ken-tucky­Derby;­he­had­earned­his­spot­in­thatrace­on­his­own­merits.­yes,­he­lost­thatmatch­race­to­Man­o’­war,­but­the­dynamicwins­that­made­him­the­best­challenger­tothe­century’s­greatest­horse­deserve­just­asmuch­attention­as­ that­ single­ race.­thisbook­is­the­first­to­tell­the­whole­story­ofour­first­triple­crown­winner,­a­chance­tolearn­ more­ about­ why­ the­ KentuckyDerby,­the­Preakness­stakes,­and­the­bel-mont­stakes­have­become­so­integral­tothe­sports­calendar­each­year.­I­hope­thatyou­will­pick­it­up­and­enjoy­reading­it­asmuch­as­I­relished­writing­about­this­im-portant­and­pioneering­figure.

for­the­145th­Kentucky­Derby,­May­4,2019,­the­weather­conditions­were­amongthe­worst,­with­rain­falling­all­saturday­af-ternoon,­ and­ producing­ an­ extremelysloppy,­muddy­track.­but­last­year­(2018)was­ the­ wettest­ Derby­ Day,­ when­ 3.15inches­of­rain­fell.­attendance­this­year­of150,729­was­4%­less­than­last­year,­as­thethreat­of­all-day­rain­kept­many­fans­away.this­year’s­Derby­purse­was­elevated­$1million­to­a­guaranteed­$3­million,­mak-ing­it­the­richest­in­history­for­america’sfirst­leg­of­horse­racing’s­triple­crown.­In­ the­ prelude­ to­ race­ day,­arkansas

Derby­winner­and­Kentucky­Derby­4-1­fa-vorite­omaha­beach­was­withdrawn­fromthe­Derby­due­to­an­entrapped­epiglottis,­anon-serious­condition­that­is­correctablethrough­surgery,­but­with­a­three-week­re-covery­time.­according­ to­ the­ Merck­ veterinary

in Tennesseeon­May­16,­2019,­the­tennessee­De-

partment­of­agriculture­(tDa)­reportedthat­a­horse­stabled­at­a­ farm­in­shelbycounty­ had­ recently­ tested­ positive­ forequine­ Infectious­anemia­ (eIa).­ “thehorse­has­been­euthanized,­and­state­offi-cials­are­now­testing­additional­horses­thatstabled­ with­ or­ lived­ near­ the­ infectedhorse,”­the­report­stated.­one­state­officialtold­ the­ Mid-South Horse Review thatnearly­50­horses­associated­with­the­posi-tive­horse­had­been­tested­so­far.eIa­is­not­contagious­to­humans.­It­is­a

blood-borne­ illness­ that­can­be­fatal­ forhorses.­ symptoms­ may­ include­ fever,weakness,­ swelling,­ loss­ of­ appetite,­ orcolic.­however,­an­infected­horse­may­notshow­any­clinical­signs.­there­is­no­treat-ment­or­vaccine.­once­infected,­a­horsemust­be­permanently­quarantined­or­euth-anized.In­January,­four­horses­stabled­at­a­farm

in­ rutherford­ county­ were­ euthanizedafter­they­tested­positive­for­eIa.­six­otherhorses­at­the­same­farm­tested­negative.according­to­a­state­official,­tDa­is­not

allowed­to­give­the­actual­location­of­thepositive­horse,­but­that­all­horses­within­a200­yard­radius­(and­further­at­times)­ofthe­ affected­ horse­ are­ quarantined­ andtested.­

tDa­cannot­reveal­the­location­for­sev-eral­reasons.­blame­is­always­placed­onthe­premise­or­horse­owner­when­a­horseis­tested­positive.­­however,­owners­do­notintentionally­make­their­horse­have­eIa,and­in­most­situations,­cannot­help­the­factthat­their­horses­contract­the­disease.It­also­puts­horse­folks­on­the­alert­of

the­ importance­ to­ test­ all­ horses­ and­ tocheck­coggins­ test­ results­at­all­events.and­ tDa­ advises­ that­ people­ not­ taketheir­ horses­ to­ events­ that­ don’t­ checkcoggins­ tests.­ and,­ each­ event­ shouldcompare­the­coggins­papers­to­the­horseto­insure­that­the­papers­match­the­horse.coggins­tests­that­don’t­match­the­horsedo­occur­fairly­often.last,­if­a­horse­comes­across­the­ten-

the­national­steeplechase­association(nsa),­governing­body­of­jump­racing­innorth­america,­has­developed­an­officialpolicy­regarding­steeplechase­horse­healthand­ safety.­ the­ policy­ states­ that­ nsa“places­the­highest­priority­on­the­healthand­ well-being­ of­ our­ horses­ and­ ourhuman­athletes.”­their­policy­notes­that“race­meets­are­not­conducted­for­profit”and­that­“proceeds­are­donated­to­charity.”the­nsa­employs­a­safety­director­whoregularly­inspects­courses­for­suitability,and­safety­inspections­of­all­race­coursesare­conducted­several­weeks­before­eachmeet.­ recommendations­ are­ made­ forshort-term­and­long-term­improvements,if­needed.“veterinarians­conduct­examinations­of

all­horses­before­they­race­and­have­theauthority­to­scratch­a­horse­that­they­donot­consider­to­be­ready­to­run.­all­racemeets­are­required­to­have­equine­ambu-lances­with­attending­veterinarians,­as­wellas­medical­ambulances­with­trained­emer-gency­personnel,­on­course­at­all­time­dur-ing­the­races,”­states­the­nsa.“steeplechase­ medication­ rules­ are

when­collierville,­tenn.­horse­trainerashley­fant­gave­birth­to­her­daughter­justafter­ the­ Germantown­ charity­ horseshow­in­2016,­friends­suspected­it­would-n’t­be­long­until­she­started­searching­fora­pony­for­her­daughter,­Georgia.and­ it­didn’t­ take­ long­for­ashley­ to

find­the­perfect­pony­for­Georgia­–­rosie,a­mostly­welsh,­14-year-old­pony­(around16­ now).­ she­ found­ the­ pony­ throughtrainer­ashley­Morrison­in­tuscaloosa,­al-abama.­rosie­already­had­a­reputation­as­awonderful­kids­pony.­“tootsie”­birchfieldhad­received­her­as­a­christmas­presentwhen­ she­ was­ around­ 6­ years­ old,­ androsie­just­went­into­the­show­ring­and­didthe­job­for­her.­“tootsie”­outgrew­rosiewhen­she­got­really­good­at­short­stirrupand­needed­a­longer-strided­pony.so­in­December­2017,­Georgia­received

rosie­the­Pony.­ashley­has­had­the­ponyfor­about­a­year­and­a­half­now,­and­Geor-gia­and­rosie­have­definitely­developed­apersonal­relationship.

snapper­was­a­member­of­our­familyfor­30­years.­he­was­a­brown­and­whitePaint/welsh­pony.­ I­bought­snapper­ for$200,­money­that­was­designated­for­myelectric­bill.­however,­at­the­time­I­waslooking­for­a­way­to­help­my­three­daugh-ters­ and­ me­ through­ a­ difficult­ period.they­had­always­wanted­a­pony,­but­myhusband­didn’t­want­them­to­have­one.­Ihad­always­loved­horses­and,­after­rentinga­pony­for­a­birthday­party,­my­3-year-old(at­the­time)­refused­to­get­off­the­ponyand­let­anyone­else­ride.­when­I­saw­howmuch­my­children­loved­horses,­it­inspiredme­to­become­a­horse­owner.­so­as­soon­asmy­ divorce­was­ in­ the­works,­ I­ boughtsnapper­as­a­christmas­present.­little­didI­know­how­he­would­ change­our­ livesforever!­In­ the­ years­ that­ followed­ snapper

taught­us­a­lot­about­horses.­I­was­teachingschool­and­also­working­other­jobs­to­sup-port­ our­ newly­ acquired­ “horse­ habit.”soon­other­ ponies­were­ on­board­ to­ dopony­rides,­plus­a­quarter­horse­and­sad-dle­horses.­ I­ learned­ that­a­dually­ truckwas­the­only­way­to­pull­those­big,­longsteel­horse­trailers.­snapper­ taught­my­ kids­ to­ be­ expert

horse­women.­he­bucked­and­reared­up­somuch,­they­could­ride­anything­when­theygot­off­him.­sometimes,­I­had­to­ride­him

down­before­they­could­get­on,­being­only5­and­7­years­old,­and­he­would­buck­meso­hard­I­would­see­stars.­the­kids­taughtsnapper­tricks­and­he­was­an­easy­learner.however,­if­he­didn’t­like­you,­you­could-n’t­ride­him.I­became­coordinator­for­the­bill­Pick-

ett­rodeo,­a­title­I’ve­had­for­the­last­26years.­In­the­early­years­snapper­was­sobad­they­wanted­to­use­him­for­buckingstock.­he­would­even­buck­professionalbronc­riders­off,­but­my­little­girl­could­geton­him­and­ride­on­down­the­road.one­weekend,­I­had­a­pony­ride­to­do

at­ the­ school­where­ I­ taught,­ and­ I­wasvery­excited­about­it.­but­snapper­didn’tlike­doing­pony­rides,­so­I­played­everytrick­in­the­book­to­not­let­him­know­I­waspreparing­for­a­ride.­but­I­soon­found­outthat­ he­ understood­ almost­ everything­ Isaid­to­him.­I­told­him­the­night­before­that

we­were­going­to­school­to­do­a­pony­ride.the­ next­ day­ snapper­ broke­ out­ of­ thefence­and­took­the­other­ponies­with­him.I­found­him­a­mile­away,­hiding­betweensome­big­rolls­of­hay.­­I­caught­the­otherponies,­but­snapper­wedged­himself­be-tween­that­hay­so­that­I­couldn’t­get­him.I­did­the­ride­without­him­and­had­no­prob-lem­catching­him­when­I­got­back­home.that’s­when­I­learned­to­watch­what­I­saidaround­him!once­ I­ taught­snapper­ to­ run­barrels

and­my­daughter­planned­to­run­him­at­ahorse­show.­­he­took­her­into­the­arena,but­then­backed­up,­kicked­a­hind­foot­up,let­out­a­thunderous­fart,­and­backed­outof­ the­ arena.­ everyone­ got­ a­ big­ laughover­that­one!­he­let­everyone­know­hewasn’t­going­ to­ run­barrels,­ because­hedidn’t­ want­ to.­ however,­ snapper­ wasvery­versatile.­­he­could­run­barrels­whenhe­wanted­to,­and­perform­other­horse­ac-tivities,­like­pull­a­wagon­and­plough;­andif­you­put­weights­on­his­feet­he­could­stephigh­like­a­walking­horse.­­he­was­alwaysthe­leader­of­my­herd,­and­he­let­the­otherhorses­around­him­know­that,­too.­If­wewere­on­a­trail­ride,­he­had­to­be­first­or­hewouldn’t­go.­but­no­matter­what­he­did,we­loved­him.snapper­ had­ a­ health­ problem­ that­ I

dealt­with­ for­all­ those­years:­he­wouldcolic­once­or­twice­a­year.­needless­to­say,I­missed­days­at­work­after­staying­up­withhim­ all­ night,­ but­ he­ always­ pulledthrough.­then­one­day­about­ five­yearsago­he­foundered.­­It­took­a­good­veteri-

narian­and­special­farrier­care,­and­somemoney,­to­see­him­through.­­around­that­time,­I­believe­God­sent­an

angel­in­the­way­of­a­stray­dog­to­my­barn.he­was­with­another­dog­and­they­bothwere­covered­with­fleas­and­had­no­fur.one­died­the­next­day,­but­I­was­able­tosave­the­other­one,­whom­I­later­namedhobo.­hobo­ took­ up­with­ snapper­ andnever­left­his­side.­he­would­lick­snap-per’s­feet­as­if­he­knew­what­bothered­him.If­I­took­snapper­to­the­vet­or­anywhereelse,­hobo­was­in­the­trailer­with­him.­­heslept­with­snapper­in­his­stall.­­I’ve­neverseen­a­stray­dog­take­up­with­a­horse­theway­hobo­did!­If­snapper­was­in­the­pas-ture,­hobo­was­right­at­his­side.­­he­didn’tleave­snapper­for­three­years,­not­even­onthe­day­that­I­went­into­the­barn­and­foundsnapper­ dead.­ hobo­ stood­ over­ him,guarding­him.­­I­had­to­lock­him­up,­so­thatsnapper­could­be­taken­out­and­buried.­­hobo­grieved­for­a­few­days­and­then

started­sticking­close­by­me­and­the­otherhorses,­and­he­slowly­started­adjusting.­hethinks­it’s­his­duty­to­guard­the­horses,­al-though­he­was­never­trained­to­do­this.­I­ don’t­ believe­ snapper­ would­ have

lived­as­long­as­he­did­without­hobo.­I’vetaken­in­strays­and­even­starving­horses;I’ve­ taken­ in­ dogs­ for­my­ children,­ butnever­one­for­a­horse.I­won’t­let­another­horse­in­snapper’s

stall;­that’s­his­shrine.­we’ll­always­lovehim­and­the­new­life­we’ve­enjoyed­be-cause­of­him.­

for­the­second­year­in­a­row,­the­Dixieoutlaws,­an­exca­(extreme­cowboy­as-sociation)­ club,­ brought­ their­Memphisshowdown­ to­ the­show­Place­arena­ inMemphis,­tenn.­on­May­4-5,­2019.­the­ weekend’s­ theme­ was­ cinco­ de

Mayo,­thus­the­courses­were­set­up­with­aMexican­theme.­on­saturday,­if­you­wereto­look­at­the­indoor­course­from­the­air,­itspelled­MexIco.­the­courses­were­dif-ferent­for­saturday­and­sunday.­In­one­partof­the­course,­the­horse­had­to­travel­be-tween­two­taco­shells­and,­on­sunday­atthe­finals,­the­horse­had­to­travel­throughthe­taco­shells­sideways!­on­friday­May­3,­ the­Dixie­outlaws

hosted­a­clinic­with­head­judge­lee­hart.hart­ has­ won­ multiple­ championships,dating­back­to­1997,­including­exca­Proand­ futurity­ world­ champion,­ wrcatop­hand,­and­bronc­rider­world­cham-pion.­riders­in­the­clinic­were­instructedon­all­aspects­of­extreme­cowboy­racing,and­it­was­a­perfect­opportunity­to­learnthe­ “ins”­ and­ “outs”­ of­ the­ sport­ fromsomeone­ who­ knows­ it­ well.­ hart­ de-signed­all­the­courses­at­this­event,­and­isalso­one­of­the­judges.­­the­courses­were­quite­complicated,­so

judges­ would­ walk­ the­ participantsthrough­the­course­before­the­race­startedto­explain­what­each­one­should­do­and­thesequence­in­which­to­do­it.­cheryl­ Moore­ described­ what­ the

judges­look­for­at­an­exca­event:“In­ an­ extreme­ cowboy­association

race,­a­judge­is­looking­for­an­equine­thatis­attentive,­ears­forward,­engaged­in­thecompetition,­and­responds­to­the­rider’scues.­the­ rider’s­cues­should­be­subtle.the­equine­should­make­a­smooth­transi-tion­to­an­obstacle­and­navigate­the­obsta-cle­without­losing­momentum,­finishingthe­obstacle­stronger­than­starting­it.“the­rider­should­have­loose­reins­and

the­ obstacles­ should­ be­ completed,demonstrating­confidence­and­ trust,­notforce.­It­is­also­a­race,­so­the­equine­andrider­team­should­take­every­advantage­tosave­time­on­the­course­by­effective­use­ofspeed,­taking­legal­shortcuts­on­the­course,and­attacking­obstacles­while­in­control.“the­objective­is­to­quickly­conquer­the

obstacles,­while­making­something­that­ischallenging­ to­ others,­ look­ easy.­ speedwith­control­are­the­keys­to­success.”In­talking­with­many­of­the­participants,

I­asked­them­what­they­wanted­to­accom-plish.­one­described­it­as­trying­to­exer-cise­control­of­the­horse­while­making­itlook­ easy­ and­ keeping­ it­ consistentthroughout­the­race.­­even­though­the­racewas­timed,­I­was­told­it­was­more­impor-

tant­ to­perform­at­ all­ the­obstacles­ cor-rectly­than­try­to­reach­the­finish­line­in­ashort­time.­there­were­all­ages­at­this­event,­and

categories­ for­young­and­old,­beginnersand­pros,­so­everyone­could­fit­in­some-where.­­Interestingly,­one­participant,­whois­74­years­old,­said­he­started­riding­in­hisearly­50s,­so­it’s­never­too­late­to­learn.one­participant­said­this­was­her­first­timefor­such­an­event,­while­others­have­beenat­it­for­a­while.­­several­participants­werefrom­australia!­I­asked­one­of­the­young­participants,

who­has­been­doing­ this­ for­ five­years,how­ she­ controlled­her­horse­ so­well.­ Ilearned­that­it­is­important­that­the­riderand­horse­have­a­good­relationship;­how-ever,­ it­ is­ also­ important­ that­ the­ horseknows­that­the­rider­is­boss.­you­want­tomake­it­look­easy­to­travel­the­course­withlittle­or­no­struggle­with­the­horse,­so­com-munication­between­the­rider­and­horse­isvery­important.­one­rider­said­that­she­can­signal­her

horse­to­stop­simply­by­how­she­sits­backin­the­saddle.­she­and­her­horse­have­thattight­relationship­in­which­they­understandeach­other­to­the­extent­that­they­can­do­allthe­tasks­required­in­these­courses.­­­I­learned­that­while­attempting­to­stop­a

horse,­these­riders­say­it­is­important­therider­is­leaned­back­in­their­saddle,­and­thehorse­should­stop­with­its­back­legs.­a­stopin­which­the­rider­is­leaning­forward­andthe­ horse­ is­ using­ its­ front­ legs­ is­ thewrong­way,­and­points­are­deducted.­holding­the­reins­lightly­is­important­to

the­judges.­­riders­had­a­variety­of­reins,from­short­to­long,­and­their­hold­was­ei-ther­ two­handed­or­one­handed­–­all­byrider­preference.­the­judge­was­just­look-ing­for­the­loose­reins­in­judging­each­par-ticipant.­any­breed­of­horse­was­welcome­at­this

event,­ as­ the­ challenge­ is­ making­ itthrough­all­the­obstacles­correctly­and­inthe­least­amount­of­time.­­at­a­sanctionedexca­event,­the­obstacles­usually­simu-late­things­that­you­would­encounter­on­atrail­ride­or­daily­work­on­a­ranch.­this­was­the­first­obstacle­course­I­have

seen­that­was­so­detailed­and­complicated.the­time­and­training­that­ they­put­ intothis­ has­ to­ be­ extensive,­ and­ I­was­ im-pressed­by­how­well­all­the­riders­did­atthe­event.­­this­was­a­very­enjoyable­event.­ If­ I

had­a­horse,­this­is­what­I­would­want­todo.­I­wouldn’t­care­if­I­won­or­even­did­itall­right.­I­would­be­happy­just­to­make­itfrom­start­to­finish!­I­also­considered­whatthe­horse­may­be­thinking,­such­as­whywould­I­want­to­walk­sideways­betweentwo­tacos?­­

chairman­of­ the­tqha­region­7­showcommittee,­ hosting­ nine­ full­ aqhashows­in­two­back-to-back­events­makesthe­lucky­7­more­attractive­for­exhibitorsfrom­tennessee­and­surrounding­states.­­“we­get­people­from­texas,­Indiana­and

florida,­and­for­those­trainers­to­scoot­upfor­just­a­four-day­run­is­not­very­attrac-tive­for­them,”­suzanne­explained.­“theylike­a­longer­run­and­it’s­also­easier­for­us,as­a­committee,­to­have­a­longer­run.”­the­show­committee­works­year-round

to­make­the­lucky­7­a­successful­show­formiddle­tennessee.“the­ reason­most­ of­ us­ serve­ on­ the

show­committee­ is­ that­we­want­ a­ nicehorse­ show­ in­ our­ own­backyard,”­ saidsuzanne,­ who’s­ from­ bethesda,­ tn.“Most­of­us­have­to­travel­a­minimum­offour­to­five­hours­to­get­to­a­larger­aqhashow,­ so­ we­ really­ want­ and­ need­ thiscompetition­in­our­backyard.­I­can’t­sayenough­good­things­about­all­of­the­peo-ple,­including­our­sponsors,­who­supportthis­horse­show­year­after­year.”­Participants­enjoyed­a­slew­of­parties

and­other­hospitality­events,­including­aDerby­ watch­ party­ and­ plenty­ of­ give-aways.­show­sponsor­and­exhibitor­ryancottingim­ of­ ryan­ cottingim­ showhorses­in­spring­hill,­tn,­says­the­show’sfocus­on­southern­hospitality­is­one­of­thereasons­exhibitors­come­back­year­afteryear.“the­committee­puts­a­lot­of­effort­into

fun­activities­and­events,­and­I­think­that’sappreciated­ by­ their­ exhibitors,”­ ryansaid.­“In­terms­of­hospitality,­that’s­a­bigdraw­for­that­horse­show.­the­second­bigdraw­ consists­ of­ their­ prizes­ for­ circuitawards,­ class­ winners,­ and­ all-around

awards.­ they’ve­ tried­ to­ put­ a­ goodamount­of­revenue­back­into­prizes,­and­Ithink­that’s­another­thing­that­exhibitorsreally­appreciate.”­first-time­attendee­and­exhibitor­Mike

Keller,­a­horse­trainer­from­el­reno,­oK,traveled­eleven­hours­to­attend­the­lucky7­with­one­of­his­clients.“this­is­my­first­time­in­tennessee,­and

it’s­been­good,”­Mike­said.­“as­far­as­theshow,­the­atmosphere­is­great,­the­peopleare­ very­ friendly­ and­ it’s­ a­ good­ feel.there­are­a­lot­of­new­faces­for­me­here.this­show’s­a­little­more­laid-back,­a­littlemore­hometown­and­very­welcoming.”­Mike­trains­horses­and­riders­in­a­vari-

ety­ of­ disciplines,­ including­ all-aroundevents,­reining,­and­ranch­riding.

“I­enjoy­helping­people,”­Mike­said.­“Ilike­seeing­that­lightbulb­come­on­when­arider­gets­a­little­bit­of­success.­Most­ofthem­get­a­smile­on­their­faces­and­there’sa­ sense­ of­ pride­when­ they­ accomplishsomething.­It­can­happen­in­the­show­penor­in­a­lesson.­everything­we­work­on­inlessons­ will,­ hopefully,­ transfer­ in­ theshow­pen,­and­when­you­see­that­happen,it’s­a­good­thing.”horse­trainer­todd­Grant­of­newnan,

really­like­it,”­todd­said.­“It’s­a­good­horseshow.­there­are­some­great­horses­here.the­competition’s­the­best­part.”the­little­7/lucky­7­classic­was­man-

aged­by­casey­Devitt­and­announced­byclark­scoggin,­with­Pat­Kress­serving­asshow­ secretary.­ Judges­ for­ the­lucky­7classic­included­sissy­anderson,­Jerry­er-ickson,­ bob­ Kail,­ Debi­ Kail,­ Jenniferthompson­and­bruce­walquist.­the­showfeatured­ trail­ courses­ designed­ by­ timKimura­and­hunter­courses­designed­byfuzzy­Mayo.­“as­ far­ as­ middle­ tennessee­ is­ con-

cerned,­the­lucky­7­is­definitely­one­of­thelargest­attended­shows­in­terms­of­entriesand­number­of­horses,”­ryan­said.­“that’sgood­for­our­business­and­our­industry,­butit­ also­ brings­ revenue­ into­ the­ area­ forlocal­businesses.­It’s­good­for­all­of­us­tohave­that­large­a­horse­show­here­in­mid-dle­tennessee.”­­

Jackson,­Ms.­–May­3,­2019–­this­year,the­semper­fi­/­Jinx­Mccain­horseman-ship­Program,­aka­Dixie­challenge,­cele-brates­ its­ 5th­ year­ of­ helping­ woundedveterans.­the­program­is­a­confidence­andskill-building­horsemanship­program­forcombat­wounded,­critically­ill,­and­cata-strophically­ injured­ service­ members.since­its­inception­in­2011,­more­than­300service­members­and­veterans­have­sad-dled-up­and­experienced­the­satisfactionof­ developing­ their­ horsemanship­ skillsthrough­practical­application­on­workingcattle­ranches­across­the­country.this­ spring,­ the­ Mississippi­ quarter

horse­ youth­ association­ hosted­ 16wounded­veterans­from­all­over­the­coun-try­in­Jackson­Mississippi,­and­introducedthem­to­horsemanship­skills,­roping,­andsorting­over­a­4-day­period,­april­­25-28,2019.­It’s­part­of­the­semper­fi­fund­/­JinxMccain­horsemanship­program,­dubbedthe­“Dixie­challenge.”­brooks­ Derryberry,­ President­ of­ the

you’re­on­a­trail­ride­and­see­a­horse­upahead­in­the­woods­whose­saddle­and­tackappear­to­be­in­place.­he’s­standing­thereas­ though­ abandoned,­ and­ as­ you­ ap-proach,­you­note­that­he’s­tied­to­a­tree.there’s­no­rider­in­sight,­the­horse­isn’t­ag-itated,­and­you­wonder­what’s­up.­It­mightjust­be­the­equine­third­of­a­trio­of­part-ners,­the­other­two,­human,­and­all­threeare­participating­in­a­ride­and­tie­event.ride­and­tie­events­started­in­st.­he-

lena,­california­in­1971­as­a­public­rela-tions­effort­ to­promote­ the­durability­of

levi­strauss­jeans.­In­a­ride­and­tie­event,two­people­leapfrog­one­another:­the­firstrider­ties­off­the­horse­and­begins­running,and­when­ his­ partner­ catches­ up­ to­ thehorse,­the­partner­jumps­on­and­keeps­rid-ing.­eventually­the­rider­overtakes­the­oneon­ foot.­the­horse­ is­ tied­off­again­andwaits­for­the­team­mate,­now­coming­upthe­ trail.­this­ alternating­ I­ ride/you­ runwith­you­ride/I­run­is­what­ride­and­tie­isall­about.­and­the­people­who­participatetend­to­love­it.­some­say­it’s­the­most­funthing­they’ve­ever­done­with­a­horse!ride­and­tie­races­begin­with­most­of

on­a­wet­and­muddy­day­at­this­year’sIroquois­ steeplechase,­ May­ 11th­ innashville,­tenn.,­all­of­the­racers,­trainers,and­ spectators­ could­ notice­ how­ green,lush,­and­relatively­free­of­mud­the­actualracetrack­was.­while­the­infield­and­park-ing­areas­were­churned­up­by­tailgatingrevelers,­the­track­where­the­horses­gal-loped­at­full­speed­and­jumped­had­nearlyperfect­footing.­this­does­not­come­by­ac-cident.­years­of­planning­and­preparation,as­well­as­diligent­hard­work­throughoutthe­year,­keep­the­track­at­Percy­warnerPark­ready­for­its­one­day­a­year­of­sport.the­tragic­fatal­horse­injuries­this­year

at­ racetracks­ in­ the­u.s.,­ such­ as­santaanita,­california,­have­brought­to­the­fore-front­the­challenge­of­providing­and­main-taining­safe­footing­for­racing.­these­fatalinjuries­have­ taken­place­on­dirt­ tracks.none­have­happened­on­turf­tracks.­Dwight­hall,­chairman­of­the­Iroquois
