sirbartonwonamerica’sfirsttriplecrown one hundred years ago in 1919,manydecadesbeforeIbecameafanofthesport,especiallyofthiseliteachievement.hishistoricrunthroughourclassicraceswerenotknownasthetriplecrownuntillater, taking on that moniker within adecadeofhiswins.by the timeIcamealong,tenhorseshadjoinedhimincom-pletingthatfeat,sealingtheiriconicstatusamongthegreatnamesthathavewowedfansofhorseracingformorethanacen-tury.Multiplebooksonthetriplecrowngracemybookshelves,butanybookontheseracesdevotesonlyachaptertoeachwinner,encapsulatingtheirstoriesinonlyafewpages.sincespaceisatapremium,Iasareaderalwayssuspectedtherewasmoretoeachstory.thiswasespecially thecasewithsir
barton.overandover,Ireadthesamefewdetails:shippedtolouisvilletoserveasthe rabbit for his stablemate, broke hismaidenintheKentuckyDerby,wentontowin the Preakness and the belmont tocomplete the first triple crown, lost amatchracetoMano’war,andthendiedinobscurity.asaresearcher,trainedtoun-coverallofthedetails,thispatnarrative
beggedfordeeperconsideration.asarac-ingfanwhofellinlovewiththesportviathetriplecrown,Ifoundthecalltoworkonthissegmentofthehistoryofhorserac-ing,andtocontributetoitsbodyofknowl-edge,irresistible.as I researched sir barton’s life, I
foundoutthatthestoryofthischampion,thatIthoughtIknew,isapowerfullessonof how easily inaccuracies and impres-sionscanbeintroducedintothehistoricalrecordandobscuretheimpactofasignif-icantcontributortoasport.
Reading between the Lines
I became a horse racing fan in fifthgrade,afterateacherreadusthefirstbookintheBlack Stallion series.Isoughtre-sources for learning more, combingthroughlibrariesforbooksand,inthispre-Internetera,writingletterstoracinginsti-
tutions.Ilearnedhowtoaskquestionsandhowtofindinformation,skillsthatlaterhelpedmeasawriter.Ialwaysaspiredtoworkintheindustryinsomeway,butthelimitationsofgeographymeantthatroleeludedmeuntil2013.withthe100thanniversaryofthetriple
crownapproaching,Iwantedfindabookaboutsirbarton,abookthatwouldtellthestorybehindthefirsttriplecrown,butfoundthatonlyamemoircalledBoots and
Saddles coveredthattime,andeventhatheld only a few pages about thismile-stone.withaneyetowardthedeadlineof2019andthe100thanniversary,Idecidedthat my background in writing and re-searchgavemetheskillsnecessarytoun-dertakeabookaboutsirbarton’scareer.Iembarkedonafive-yearjourneythroughlibraries,bothdigitalandhardcopy,andamultitudeofdraftsandeditstocreatethefirstbooktotellsirbarton’sstoryinfull.thegoalwastoreexaminewhathistorysaysaboutsirbartonandtosharethetruestorybehindthebirthofthetriplecrown,aseriesofracesthatdominateshorserac-ingfrombreedingtosellingtoscheduling– the dream ofmany a breeder, owner,trainer,andjockey.

thebestbooksaboutracing’schampi-onsnotonlyhighlighttheraces,butalsobringthefiguresinvolvedbacktolife.Sir
Barton and the Making of the Triple
Crown buildsonthestoryweknowandaddsmoredepth,balancingthefactswiththosedetailsthatdrawreadersin.Ibeganwithsirbarton’smilestonesandthenex-ploredalloftheracesinbetween.Ialsowoveinthepeoplebehinditall:Johne.Madden,hisbreederandlegendaryfigurein the early 20th century; commanderJ.K.l.ross,hisownerduringhisracingcareer,asportsmanandphilanthropistonamissiontodominateracing;h.G.bedwell,histrainerwhosereputationasacompletehorsemanbattledwithrumorsabouthismethods;andjockeysJohnnyloftus,earlsande,andcarrollshilling–allfigureswhotouchedsirbartonduringtheirhalloffamecareers.thesepeopleimpactthehorse’s story throughout, and all con-tributetohisultimatestatusinracinginonewayoranother.Isharedasmuchoftheirstoryaspossible,giventhelimita-tionsofspaceinherentinanybook.Ialsoworkedtoundothoseinaccura-
ciesandimpressionsthathadcreepedintosirbarton’sstoryandtocorrectthem.no,hewasnottherabbitforthe1919Ken-tuckyDerby;hehadearnedhisspotinthatraceonhisownmerits.yes,helostthatmatchracetoMano’war,butthedynamicwinsthatmadehimthebestchallengertothecentury’sgreatesthorsedeservejustasmuchattentionas that single race.thisbookisthefirsttotellthewholestoryofourfirsttriplecrownwinner,achancetolearn more about why the KentuckyDerby,thePreaknessstakes,andthebel-montstakeshavebecomesointegraltothesportscalendareachyear.IhopethatyouwillpickitupandenjoyreadingitasmuchasIrelishedwritingaboutthisim-portantandpioneeringfigure.

partmentofagriculture(tDa)reportedthatahorsestabledata farminshelbycounty had recently tested positive forequine Infectiousanemia (eIa). “thehorsehasbeeneuthanized,andstateoffi-cialsarenowtestingadditionalhorsesthatstabled with or lived near the infectedhorse,”thereportstated.onestateofficialtold the Mid-South Horse Review thatnearly50horsesassociatedwiththeposi-tivehorsehadbeentestedsofar.eIaisnotcontagioustohumans.Itisa
blood-borne illness thatcanbefatal forhorses. symptoms may include fever,weakness, swelling, loss of appetite, orcolic.however,aninfectedhorsemaynotshowanyclinicalsigns.thereisnotreat-mentorvaccine.onceinfected,ahorsemustbepermanentlyquarantinedoreuth-anized.InJanuary,fourhorsesstabledatafarm
in rutherford county were euthanizedaftertheytestedpositiveforeIa.sixotherhorsesatthesamefarmtestednegative.accordingtoastateofficial,tDaisnot
allowedtogivetheactuallocationofthepositivehorse,butthatallhorseswithina200yardradius(andfurtherattimes)ofthe affected horse are quarantined andtested.

whencollierville,tenn.horsetrainerashleyfantgavebirthtoherdaughterjustafter the Germantown charity horseshowin2016,friendssuspecteditwould-n’tbelonguntilshestartedsearchingforaponyforherdaughter,Georgia.and itdidn’t take longforashley to
findtheperfectponyforGeorgia–rosie,amostlywelsh,14-year-oldpony(around16 now). she found the pony throughtrainerashleyMorrisonintuscaloosa,al-abama.rosiealreadyhadareputationasawonderfulkidspony.“tootsie”birchfieldhadreceivedherasachristmaspresentwhen she was around 6 years old, androsiejustwentintotheshowringanddidthejobforher.“tootsie”outgrewrosiewhenshegotreallygoodatshortstirrupandneededalonger-stridedpony.soinDecember2017,Georgiareceived
rosiethePony.ashleyhashadtheponyforaboutayearandahalfnow,andGeor-giaandrosiehavedefinitelydevelopedapersonalrelationship.

horses in the trailer to travel toashow,Georgia is often at the ready, asking ifrosieneedstobeloadednext.rosieactu-allygottotraveltotheGermantownchar-ityhorseshowlastyeartoshowinthelead line class on wednesday night.rosieandGeorgiawillbeshowinginthatclass again this year.you’llwant to betheretoseethemandalltheotherfinelydressed cute riders and their smartlybraidedponies!

snapperwasamemberofourfamilyfor30years.hewasabrownandwhitePaint/welshpony. Iboughtsnapper for$200,moneythatwasdesignatedformyelectricbill.however,atthetimeIwaslookingforawaytohelpmythreedaugh-ters and me through a difficult period.theyhadalwayswantedapony,butmyhusbanddidn’twantthemtohaveone.Ihadalwayslovedhorsesand,afterrentingaponyforabirthdayparty,my3-year-old(atthetime)refusedtogetofftheponyandletanyoneelseride.whenIsawhowmuchmychildrenlovedhorses,itinspiredmetobecomeahorseowner.soassoonasmy divorcewas in theworks, I boughtsnapperasachristmaspresent.littledidIknowhowhewould changeour livesforever!In the years that followed snapper
taughtusalotabouthorses.Iwasteachingschoolandalsoworkingotherjobstosup-port our newly acquired “horse habit.”soonother ponieswere onboard to doponyrides,plusaquarterhorseandsad-dlehorses. I learned thatadually truckwastheonlywaytopullthosebig,longsteelhorsetrailers.snapper taughtmy kids to be expert
horsewomen.hebuckedandrearedupsomuch,theycouldrideanythingwhentheygotoffhim.sometimes,Ihadtoridehim
downbeforetheycouldgeton,beingonly5and7yearsold,andhewouldbuckmesohardIwouldseestars.thekidstaughtsnappertricksandhewasaneasylearner.however,ifhedidn’tlikeyou,youcould-n’tridehim.IbecamecoordinatorforthebillPick-
ettrodeo,atitleI’vehadforthelast26years.Intheearlyyearssnapperwassobadtheywantedtousehimforbuckingstock.hewouldevenbuckprofessionalbroncridersoff,butmylittlegirlcouldgetonhimandrideondowntheroad.oneweekend,Ihadaponyridetodo
at the schoolwhere I taught, and Iwasveryexcitedaboutit.butsnapperdidn’tlikedoingponyrides,soIplayedeverytrickinthebooktonotlethimknowIwaspreparingforaride.butIsoonfoundoutthat he understood almost everything Isaidtohim.Itoldhimthenightbeforethat
weweregoingtoschooltodoaponyride.the next day snapper broke out of thefenceandtooktheotherponieswithhim.Ifoundhimamileaway,hidingbetweensomebigrollsofhay.Icaughttheotherponies,butsnapperwedgedhimselfbe-tweenthathaysothatIcouldn’tgethim.Ididtheridewithouthimandhadnoprob-lemcatchinghimwhenIgotbackhome.that’swhenIlearnedtowatchwhatIsaidaroundhim!once I taughtsnapper to runbarrels
andmydaughterplannedtorunhimatahorseshow.hetookherintothearena,butthenbackedup,kickedahindfootup,letoutathunderousfart,andbackedoutof the arena. everyone got a big laughoverthatone!heleteveryoneknowhewasn’tgoing to runbarrels, becausehedidn’t want to. however, snapper wasveryversatile.hecouldrunbarrelswhenhewantedto,andperformotherhorseac-tivities,likepullawagonandplough;andifyouputweightsonhisfeethecouldstephighlikeawalkinghorse.hewasalwaystheleaderofmyherd,andhelettheotherhorsesaroundhimknowthat,too.Ifwewereonatrailride,hehadtobefirstorhewouldn’tgo.butnomatterwhathedid,welovedhim.snapper had a health problem that I
dealtwith forall thoseyears:hewouldcoliconceortwiceayear.needlesstosay,Imisseddaysatworkafterstayingupwithhim all night, but he always pulledthrough.thenonedayabout fiveyearsagohefoundered.Ittookagoodveteri-
narianandspecialfarriercare,andsomemoney,toseehimthrough.aroundthattime,IbelieveGodsentan
angelinthewayofastraydogtomybarn.hewaswithanotherdogandtheybothwerecoveredwithfleasandhadnofur.onediedthenextday,butIwasabletosavetheotherone,whomIlaternamedhobo.hobo took upwith snapper andneverlefthisside.hewouldlicksnap-per’sfeetasifheknewwhatbotheredhim.IfItooksnappertothevetoranywhereelse,hobowasinthetrailerwithhim.hesleptwithsnapperinhisstall.I’veneverseenastraydogtakeupwithahorsethewayhobodid!Ifsnapperwasinthepas-ture,hobowasrightathisside.hedidn’tleavesnapperforthreeyears,notevenonthedaythatIwentintothebarnandfoundsnapper dead. hobo stood over him,guardinghim.Ihadtolockhimup,sothatsnappercouldbetakenoutandburied.hobogrievedforafewdaysandthen
startedstickingclosebymeandtheotherhorses,andheslowlystartedadjusting.hethinksit’shisdutytoguardthehorses,al-thoughhewasnevertrainedtodothis.I don’t believe snapper would have
livedaslongashedidwithouthobo.I’vetakeninstraysandevenstarvinghorses;I’ve taken in dogs formy children, butneveroneforahorse.Iwon’tletanotherhorseinsnapper’s
stall;that’shisshrine.we’llalwayslovehimandthenewlifewe’veenjoyedbe-causeofhim.

–which consists of a dressage test andcones test. there were horse and ponyturnoutsenteredinboththetraininglevelandPreliminarylevel.thebestPrelimi-narylevelscorewasachievedbybrendarachorandherponybunny.shetookfirstinPreliminarysinglePonyandwasPre-liminarychampion.Katebushmandriv-
ingJewelwasPreliminaryreservecham-pion.the best training level score was

Mayo,thusthecoursesweresetupwithaMexicantheme.onsaturday,ifyouweretolookattheindoorcoursefromtheair,itspelledMexIco.thecoursesweredif-ferentforsaturdayandsunday.Inonepartofthecourse,thehorsehadtotravelbe-tweentwotacoshellsand,onsundayatthefinals,thehorsehadtotravelthroughthetacoshellssideways!onfridayMay3, theDixieoutlaws
hostedaclinicwithheadjudgeleehart.hart has won multiple championships,datingbackto1997,includingexcaProand futurity world champion, wrcatophand,andbroncriderworldcham-pion.ridersintheclinicwereinstructedonallaspectsofextremecowboyracing,anditwasaperfectopportunitytolearnthe “ins” and “outs” of the sport fromsomeone who knows it well. hart de-signedallthecoursesatthisevent,andisalsooneofthejudges.thecourseswerequitecomplicated,so
judges would walk the participantsthroughthecoursebeforetheracestartedtoexplainwhateachoneshoulddoandthesequenceinwhichtodoit.cheryl Moore described what the
judgeslookforatanexcaevent:“In an extreme cowboyassociation
race,ajudgeislookingforanequinethatisattentive,earsforward,engagedinthecompetition,andrespondstotherider’scues.the rider’scuesshouldbesubtle.theequineshouldmakeasmoothtransi-tiontoanobstacleandnavigatetheobsta-clewithoutlosingmomentum,finishingtheobstaclestrongerthanstartingit.“theridershouldhaveloosereinsand
the obstacles should be completed,demonstratingconfidenceand trust,notforce.Itisalsoarace,sotheequineandriderteamshouldtakeeveryadvantagetosavetimeonthecoursebyeffectiveuseofspeed,takinglegalshortcutsonthecourse,andattackingobstacleswhileincontrol.“theobjectiveistoquicklyconquerthe
obstacles,whilemakingsomethingthatischallenging to others, look easy. speedwithcontrolarethekeystosuccess.”Intalkingwithmanyoftheparticipants,
Iaskedthemwhattheywantedtoaccom-plish.onedescribeditastryingtoexer-cisecontrolofthehorsewhilemakingitlook easy and keeping it consistentthroughouttherace.eventhoughtheracewastimed,Iwastolditwasmoreimpor-
tant toperformat all theobstacles cor-rectlythantrytoreachthefinishlineinashorttime.therewereallagesatthisevent,and
categories foryoungandold,beginnersandpros,soeveryonecouldfitinsome-where.Interestingly,oneparticipant,whois74yearsold,saidhestartedridinginhisearly50s,soit’snevertoolatetolearn.oneparticipantsaidthiswasherfirsttimeforsuchanevent,whileothershavebeenatitforawhile.severalparticipantswerefromaustralia!Iaskedoneoftheyoungparticipants,
whohasbeendoing this for fiveyears,how she controlledherhorse sowell. Ilearnedthatitisimportantthattheriderandhorsehaveagoodrelationship;how-ever, it is also important that the horseknowsthattheriderisboss.youwanttomakeitlookeasytotravelthecoursewithlittleornostrugglewiththehorse,socom-municationbetweentheriderandhorseisveryimportant.oneridersaidthatshecansignalher
horsetostopsimplybyhowshesitsbackinthesaddle.sheandherhorsehavethattightrelationshipinwhichtheyunderstandeachothertotheextentthattheycandoallthetasksrequiredinthesecourses.Ilearnedthatwhileattemptingtostopa
horse,theseriderssayitisimportanttheriderisleanedbackintheirsaddle,andthehorseshouldstopwithitsbacklegs.astopinwhichtheriderisleaningforwardandthe horse is using its front legs is thewrongway,andpointsarededucted.holdingthereinslightlyisimportantto
thejudges.ridershadavarietyofreins,fromshorttolong,andtheirholdwasei-ther twohandedoronehanded–allbyriderpreference.thejudgewasjustlook-ingfortheloosereinsinjudgingeachpar-ticipant.anybreedofhorsewaswelcomeatthis
event, as the challenge is making itthroughalltheobstaclescorrectlyandintheleastamountoftime.atasanctionedexcaevent,theobstaclesusuallysimu-latethingsthatyouwouldencounteronatrailrideordailyworkonaranch.thiswasthefirstobstaclecourseIhave
seenthatwassodetailedandcomplicated.thetimeandtrainingthat theyput intothis has to be extensive, and Iwas im-pressedbyhowwellalltheridersdidattheevent.thiswasaveryenjoyableevent. If I
hadahorse,thisiswhatIwouldwanttodo.Iwouldn’tcareifIwonorevendiditallright.Iwouldbehappyjusttomakeitfromstarttofinish!Ialsoconsideredwhatthehorsemaybethinking,suchaswhywouldIwanttowalksidewaysbetweentwotacos?

showcommittee is thatwewant a nicehorse show in our ownbackyard,” saidsuzanne, who’s from bethesda, tn.“Mostofushavetotravelaminimumoffourtofivehourstogettoalargeraqhashow, so we really want and need thiscompetitioninourbackyard.Ican’tsayenoughgoodthingsaboutallofthepeo-ple,includingoursponsors,whosupportthishorseshowyearafteryear.”Participantsenjoyedaslewofparties
andotherhospitalityevents,includingaDerby watch party and plenty of give-aways.showsponsorandexhibitorryancottingim of ryan cottingim showhorsesinspringhill,tn,saystheshow’sfocusonsouthernhospitalityisoneofthereasonsexhibitorscomebackyearafteryear.“thecommitteeputsalotofeffortinto
funactivitiesandevents,andIthinkthat’sappreciated by their exhibitors,” ryansaid.“Intermsofhospitality,that’sabigdrawforthathorseshow.thesecondbigdraw consists of their prizes for circuitawards, class winners, and all-around
awards. they’ve tried to put a goodamountofrevenuebackintoprizes,andIthinkthat’sanotherthingthatexhibitorsreallyappreciate.”first-timeattendeeandexhibitorMike
Keller,ahorsetrainerfromelreno,oK,traveledelevenhourstoattendthelucky7withoneofhisclients.“thisismyfirsttimeintennessee,and
it’sbeengood,”Mikesaid.“asfarastheshow,theatmosphereisgreat,thepeopleare very friendly and it’s a good feel.therearealotofnewfacesformehere.thisshow’salittlemorelaid-back,alittlemorehometownandverywelcoming.”Miketrainshorsesandridersinavari-
ety of disciplines, including all-aroundevents,reining,andranchriding.

onawetandmuddydayatthisyear’sIroquois steeplechase, May 11th innashville,tenn.,alloftheracers,trainers,and spectators could notice how green,lush,andrelativelyfreeofmudtheactualracetrackwas.whiletheinfieldandpark-ingareaswerechurnedupbytailgatingrevelers,thetrackwherethehorsesgal-lopedatfullspeedandjumpedhadnearlyperfectfooting.thisdoesnotcomebyac-cident.yearsofplanningandpreparation,aswellasdiligenthardworkthroughouttheyear,keepthetrackatPercywarnerParkreadyforitsonedayayearofsport.thetragicfatalhorseinjuriesthisyear
at racetracks in theu.s., such assantaanita,california,havebroughttothefore-frontthechallengeofprovidingandmain-tainingsafefootingforracing.thesefatalinjurieshave takenplaceondirt tracks.nonehavehappenedonturftracks.Dwighthall,chairmanoftheIroquois
steeplechase,takesahands-onapproachtoprovidingoneofthebeststeeplechasecoursesinthecountry.theIroquoismain-tainsthetrack,jumps,andseating,whileMetroParksandrecreationmaintainstherest of the park.although the race daycrowdisalittlehardontheparkflora,acoupleofweeksafterwards,hardlyany-onewouldnoticetherehadbeenanydam-
age.nootherhorseactivitiesexceptthesevenracesonIroquoisracedayareal-lowedon the track itself.but there isacrosscountryeventcourseintheinfieldanddressagearenasoutsideofthetrackusedfortheMiddletennesseePonyclubhorsetrials.hallsaidthattheyhavetheracecourse
footingmaintenancedowntoascience,andmostofitisdonebyoneperson.heusesthesameformulaforturfastheMas-tersGolfcourseinaugusta,Georgia.thebase consists of thick mat of bermudagrass,whichisoverseededbychampionGqperennialryegrass.thebermudaturfgives the track its bounce and the ryegrass gives it its color and texture.bermuda grass, a perennial, loves hothumidweather,butgoesdormantinthewinter.ryegrassisacool-weathergrassthatdiesbackinearlysummer.thiscom-binationmakes for a firm and resilientbasewith just therightamountofsolidfootingthesecondweekendofMaywhenthesteeplechasetakesplace.thetrackhasanelaboratecomputer-
controlledrainbirdsprinklersystemwith23different,well-dividedzonesandsprin-kler heads that have the capability ofsprayingwaterupto50ft.somesectionsofthetrackdraindifferentlythanothers,buttheentirecourseneedstohaveconsis-tentfooting,sodifferentzonesarewatered
at different rates. Moisture levels aremeasuredineachzone.thisinformationisenteredintothecomputerandthesys-temwatersattherateneeded.septemberandoctoberareusuallythedriestmonthsin the mid-south and the track needsenoughmoisturetogerminateseed.
acambridgeroller (cultipacker) isused throughout the growing season tosmoothoutandaeratetheturf,andagolfcoursetypemowerisusedtomowit.thetrackwasmowedonthursdaybeforesat-
urday’ssteeplechasetothetargetheightof5to5½inches,whichgivesthetrackgoodcushionandkeepsgallopinghoovesoutofthedeepturf.becauseofalltheeffortandexpertise
putintomaintainingthesteeplechasetrackatPercywarnerPark,evenonawet,rainyday,thehorsesandriderscanconfidentlyraceandjumponawell-maintainedturfcourse.nohorse sustained any injuriesthisyear.
