Please carefully read this entire booklet about Bartle Summer Camp. There are numerous revisions and updates, so even if you are familiar with the Bartle experience, a careful review is important. The Troop places great importance on this Scouting experience and commits resources accordingly. There is absolutely no question that your Scout will benefit from their camp experience, and we encourage every Scout to attend summer camp.

We anticipate and are looking forward to another successful Second Session at Bartle. The leader-ship team for Camp Bartle includes:

Troop 10-B Bartle Campmaster: Art Shaffer

Troop 10-G Bartle Campmaster: Tony Guzzo

Troop 10 Bartle Chief Administrator: Herb Strain

Numerous other T-10 parents and alumni will be helping the Scouts in camp at Bartle, but we still need and ask all adults to join in the effort to support the scouting program. We appreciate and benefit from one another’s help and support. Please join us: You don’t need special skills – just a willingness to lend a hand! Most of all, your Scout will remember that you were there and a part of one of their best childhood memories!

TROOP 10 BARTLE - Camp Rules

We expect each Troop 10 Scout to live up to the Scout Oath, Law and Outdoor Code for the entire session at Bartle. These will be the basic guides we will live by. In addition, the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation also has rules that we must follow. Please review these rules with your Scout and make sure your they understand them. Before leaving for Bartle Summer Camp, please check your Scout’s camp box to make sure they have the items they need and is not taking those items that just shouldn’t go to camp.

THESE RULES WILL BE IN EFFECT THE ENTIRE SESSION:

• A Scout’s tent is their home. Enter another Scout’s tent only at their invitation. Respect their belongings and their equipment.

• The person responsible will pay for any damage done to a Scout’s possessions, Troop supplies, and/or Camp equipment. Tents and cots are expensive. Treat everything like it was your own, or better.

• The safety of every Scout is uppermost in each Leader’s mind. If Scouts want to leave our Campsite for any reason other than Merit Badge classes, Mic-O-Say activities, or official Troop activities, they must get the permission of an Adult Leader. If the Adult Leader thinks the destination or activity isn’t appropriate, permission will be denied. Anyone leaving Camp (even with a parent) must follow Bartle checkout procedures.

• Every member of Troop 10 will read and abide by the Camp Regulations. That means no rope or vine swings! Absolutely no fires at any time other than in an approved fire ring and then only with appropriate supervision.

• No bows and arrows or sheath knives. Respect all living things whether two legged or four legged, fur or feathers, roots or scales. Every Scout is expected to treat living things with respect.

• According to ancient and revered legend, the hallowed grounds of H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation have been blessed with many rocks on the ground. It is the intention of the All Mighty and the troop leaders that these rocks remain on the ground at all times. A Troop 10 Scout throwing a rock is subject to expulsion.

• The Leader Cabins and tents are Off Limits to all Scouts and, except in emergency, are not to be entered without the permission of an Adult Leader.

• Two Deep Leadership will be practiced at camp. (No adult is ever allowed to be alone with a single Scout. Two adults or two Scouts are required at all times.)

• Absolutely no TVs, boom boxes, water balloon launchers, or toy guns are permitted in camp. Personal Electronic Devices and electronic games are strongly discouraged; however, if they do inadvertently find their way to camp, please make sure they are clearly marked and that your Scout is aware that they are their responsibility and that the leaders do not want to hear about missing electronics. Headphones only, no speakers. Electronic items should NEVER be used outside of the tents. If seen outside, they will be taken and returned at the end of Camp. There is no place for a Scout to recharge any electronic item at camp.

• Cell Phones for younger Scouts are not allowed at Camp. Eagle Scouts and members of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say are allowed to have phones with Troop 10. No Troop 10 recharging will be permitted.

TROOP 10 BARTLE - Camp Rules

• If you have any questions about electronics, please contact the T10 Campmaster, [email protected]

• Absolutely No shaving cream allowed; If needed, shaving cream will be provided by the T10 Campmaster.

• Sheath Knives are not allowed. If a Scout wants to bring a pocketknife, no blade should be longer than three inches. No more than one pocket knife should be on a Scout’s person at any time.

• Water balloon activities will be allowed only with the T10 Campmaster’s permission, and never in or around tents.

• Aerosol cans are not allowed. Bring insect repellent, deodorant, and such in liquid or stick form only.

• Hammocks are not permitted.

• Pets are not allowed, even on Visitor’s Day.

• In keeping with Troop 10 tradition only Adult Leaders and Eagle Scouts are permitted to have or sit in personal lawn chairs in camp. All other Scouts may bring small tripod chairs.

• All Troop and Camp ceremonies and services are in support of the goals of Scouting. All Scouts, unless excused by the T10 Campmaster, are expected to attend. Religious services are held on Sunday morning, and every Scout is expected to attend a service of their choice. No Scout will be allowed to remain in Camp.

• We expect every Scout to have fun at camp, but fun at someone else’s expense isn’t fun for anyone. A Scout should behave in accordance with the Scout Oath and Scout Law at all times. If everyone follows the Camp Regulations and Troop Rules, we will all have fun!

• The following items are zero tolerance offenses and will result in expulsion of the Scout from camp:

• BUILDING OR STARTING UNAUTHORIZED FIRES

• ROCK THROWING

• POSSESSION OF LIQUID FUELS, CANDLES, MATCHES, LIGHTERS OR INCENSE

• POSSESSION OF FIREWORKS

• POSSESSION OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES, NARCOTICS OR CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES

• POSSESSION OF CIGARETTES

• POSSESSION OF FIREARMS

Any concerns about a Scout’s behavior should be discussed with the T10 Campmaster. All information will be held in confidence, and appropriate action will be taken.

Medications The medications and the original bottles should be handed in to the T10 Medication Coordinator prior to loading the buses.

Special Needs Form This form should be returned on March 30th at the T10 Bartle Meeting - Merit Badge Sign-up Session.

TROOP 10 BARTLE - Special Needs

HomesicknessHomesickness is a natural thing. We’ve all felt homesick at one time or another. The camp leaders are prepared to handle this. A common sign of homesickness is frequent calls home. If you anticipate a problem with your Scout, please let us know and we will take care of it discreetly. If you are receiving frequent calls from your Scout, or suspect home sickness please call or text:

T10-B - Art Shaffer 913.481.8410

T10-G - Tony Guzzo 314.518.8525

You can also leave a message for them at the Bartle camp office 417.646.8115.

Special Diets / Special NeedsThe Heart of America Council has included a form this year that allows you to request arrangements for any special needs and/or special dietary requests while at Bartle Summer Camp. This should be returned at the Merit Badge Sign-up Session on March 30th.

Bartle Camp will make a great effort to comply with these special requests as long as they have adequate notice. The kitchen staff at Camp Piercing Arrow has consistently shown itself to be sensitive and adaptable to dietary requirements at mealtime. They can happily accommodate your Scout’s needs if given sufficient notice.

Adults may submit a form but Bartle does not guarantee they will be able to comply.

TROOP 10 BARTLE - MedicationsExcept for inhalers and Epi-pens, Scouts are not permitted to keep personal medications. If your Scout requires prescription medication, you should package it using the specific instructions on page 13. We have a limited supply of over-the- counter medications for minor issues. If your Scout routinely uses over the counter medication, plan to supply the Troop with the medicine your Scout may need delivered to the Troop 10 Medication Coordinator.

The medications and the original bottles should be handed in to the Medication Coordinator, prior to loading the buses. They will ensure that your Scout takes their medicine at the correct time and in the correct dosage. All medication will be stored in a secure place when it is not being dispensed. Medications requiring injections or refrigeration will be kept at the Health Lodge or the Commissioner’s Cabin, and Scouts will be taken there for dispensing. Please make sure your Scout knows what their medicine looks like, when they should take it and that it is their responsibility to come to medication call at the appropriate time.

Typically, we will dispense medications before breakfast and in the evening. (These are the only times we have the troop assembled and in one place.) Any special dispensing instructions must be discussed in advance.

TROOP 10 BARTLE - Adults at Camp

Adults should plan on spending as much time as possible with the Troop. We really need your help, and the experience of spending time at camp with your Scout is something they will remember. Please sign up early so we can arrange accommoda-tions for you. Experience has shown us that this time can be a very enjoyable experience as well as quite relaxing. After all, you will be outdoors with your Scout away from stress and telephones. What could be better?

We plan to hold an Orientation Meeting for all adults on May 20th at 7:00 pm. This is a great time to get your questions answered and meet the other adults who will be going to camp.

The full time and part time adult fee schedule can be found on the Troop’s website

Adults that arrive on a day other than the first day need to stop by the Health Lodge next to the Camp Headquarters and get a release paper. They then go to the office at Piercing Arrow located in the trading post, where they will be issued a color-coded wristband to identify the days paid for. A wrist band is required to enter the dining hall. Adding additional days will not be allowed without permission from the T10 Campmaster. Adults registering after March 30th may not be allowed to attend camp. If allowed, they may not be tenting and/or eating with Troop 10.

Please contact Tim Navickas upon arrival to arrange lodging. Lodging on weekends and ceremony nights becomes challenging, but the Camp Staff will do everything to accommodate us if we let them know our needs in advance. If you just show up without signing up in advance, you may be asked to leave or at least end up sleeping at another campsite, since no personal tents are allowed on the reservation.

All lodging is pre-assigned. Tim Navickas is our Adult Lodging Coordinator. You must check with him for sleeping accommodations.

TROOP 10 BARTLE - Mail and Phone Calls

Mail CallEach day the Troop will hold Mail Call. The worst thing to see at camp is a Scout who doesn’t get any mail. They really look forward to mail. PLEASE WRITE. Give relatives the address below and ask them to write as well. We can’t get too much mail. A letter a day to your Scout is ideal. You should plan on mailing the first letter on Thursday, June 11th. Mail one or more each day through June 20th. Packages of goodies are even better.

You should also encourage your Scout to write you during their time at camp. It will help them feel connected to home and family. It will also allow them to use their free time productively. The best way to make this happen is to supply your Scout with pre-stamped, pre-addressed envelopes or postcards.

Mail Call Scout’s Name, Troop 10 Piercing Arrow, (T10-B) or (T10-G) Bartle Scout Reservation 5525 N.E. Scout Camp Road Osceola, MO 64776-9000

Telephone CallsThe camp has a limited number of public phones available to Scouts during the day. The line can be long. A Scout who makes frequent calls home isn’t getting the full benefit of the program. The phones do not accept coins. Your Scout must either have a calling card or must know how to make a collect call in order to use them. Scouts should avoid making collect calls due to the carrier’s extremely high rates. Further, in the past, the phones have failed to connect with some 800 numbers.

If you need to reach your Scout in an emergency, call the Camp Office at 417.646.8115. Camp Office hours are 7:00 am - 10:00 pm Emergency messages will be handled promptly.

Cell phones for younger scouts are not allowed at Camp, and there is no place to charge them. If you feel a Scout needs a cell phone, you must get permission from the T10 Campmaster in advance and it will be kept in the Leader’s Cabin.

Special DeparturesIf you know that you will be taking your Scout off of the Reservation during the session, please contact the T10 Campmaster prior to Camp.

Visitor Day - Be PreparedThere will be lots of Scout relatives coming into the camp on Visitor’s Day, and the entry into the camp may take a while. Please plan on coming early to avoid the rush.

TROOP 10 BARTLE - Visitor Day

Visitor’s Sunday – June 21st This is the most important day for your Scout! Please plan on arriving at camp about 10:00 am. It is about a 1½ to 2 hour drive from Kansas City. The whole family is invited, but pets are not allowed. Bring a picnic lunch – your Scout’s favorite foods – since the dining hall will be closed. Don’t forget to pack multiple drinks for everyone. The town of Clinton, about halfway to camp, knows all about Visitor’s Day. All of their fast food restaurants will be open early that morning, serving their full menus. You can pick up your meals on the way to camp if this is what you have in mind. Please remember to bring folding tables and chairs and things like plates, cups, plastic ware, and napkins. Plan on leaving LEFTOVERS, as supper is not served on Visitor’s Sunday. You will also want to bring a camera and take a picture of your Scout beside our beautiful Troop rock and in front of their immaculate tent!

PLEASE DO NOT PLAN ON TAKING YOUR SCOUT OFF THE RESERVATION. They will have plenty to show you. Plan on spending the day. Wear light summer-weight casual clothes (appropriate for the weather) and sturdy shoes. Don’t forget sun protection. You should plan on departing by 4:00 pm. If for some reason you can’t attend, please send a relative or close friend. You may also consider asking another Scout’s family to adopt your Scout for the day. If that is the case, or no one will be able to attend, please let the T10 Campmaster know as far in advance as possible.

TROOP 10 BARTLE - Late Arrivals and Early DeparturesLate Arrivals/Early DeparturesAccording to the stated H. Roe Bartle Reservation policy “There are no part time youth at camp.” Your Scout will be involved in an overall program. Each day is important to the development of the program. Your Scout needs to be at camp for the entire session. Scouts must stay an entire session to be considered for Honor Camping Programs such as Mic-O-Say and Order of the Arrow. Please don’t plan on late arrivals, leaves in between, or early departures. If these are unavoidable, you must follow these steps to take your Scout off of the Reservation:

• You must locate the T10 Campmaster.

• Together, you will go to the camp office and try to find the Bartle Camp Commissioner (this could take considerable time, so plan around it and be patient).

The Bartle Camp Commissioner will check your Scout’s paperwork and verify that you are, indeed, the parent. If someone other than a parent is taking the Scout, they must have a signed permission slip and be listed on the Camp Agreement Form. Be patient – Things move slowly at camp.

•Only then you may leave.

• You must reverse this process when you return to camp. Obviously, it’s much easier to keep your Scout at camp. You need to realize that this is extremely time consuming and takes the T10 Campmaster away from the Troop.

TROOP 10 BARTLE - Personal Gear

Label all Gear and ClothingIf you want it to come home from camp, put your Scout’s name and Troop 10 on it! If it doesn’t have the proper markings on it, it may not make the round trip. Mark everything with a permanent marker. Mark under the collar, around the waistband, inside the shoe/sock, etc. Also mark things like flashlights, water bottles, Merit Badge books, pocketknives, and all other equipment.

Camp BoxThese sturdy boxes can last a lifetime if they are properly cared for. They are a good investment that your Scout can take to college with them. Some prefer to use wooden boxes while others choose hard plastic. Either will do. Just make sure it is short enough to fit under a cot. The cot height is about 15 inches. Also remember that they will be stacked one atop the other for loading the bus for the trip down to camp and back.

Combination LockYour Scout must also have a combination lock for the camp box. Write the combination to this lock on the top of the Summer Camp Agreement Form. Somehow, many Scouts manage to forget their combinations. By having the combination on the file, the Adult Leaders can solve the problem quickly.

Your Scout’s LodgingThe campsite will have a sufficient number of tents to hold our Troop. These are wall tents, approximately 10 x 8 feet, resting on wooden or cement platforms (like Camp Naish). Each tent contains two canvas cots.

Your Scout should arrange for their tent mate as soon as possible. We need to know their tent mate preference at the T10 Bartle Night. Please write the name of your Scout’s tent mate on the Summer Camp Agreement Form in the space provided. Tent mates will be assigned by the T10 Campmaster with considerations given to preferences expressed by the Scouts. Switching tents after the session begins is not allowed. We will camp in groups of 4-5 tents called pods. If we have an odd number of Scouts, one Scout will camp in a tent solo. Due to space limits and wear on the tents, three Scouts will not be allowed in a tent.

Spending MoneyThe camp fees provide three square meals a day. There is a trading post at camp is called the Osage River Trading Company (ORTC) and it is stocked with craft supplies, camp tee shirts, patches, snacks and slushes. Each Scout is responsible for their own money. They should keep it locked in their camp box, never taking it to the pool, classes, campfires, or waterfront. They should only carry as much money with them as they need to make their purchase. There are some small costs for certain Merit Badges that are the responsibility of the Scout.

Tent Mate Request Please write the name of your Scout’s tent mate on the Summer Camp Agreement Form, and hand it in March 30th at the T10 Camp Bartle Sign-up.

Don’t forget your Scout Handbook.

TROOP 10 BARTLE - Merit Badges

Most merit badges offered by the camp are related to the outdoors. T10 also offers some badges in our campsite at times when classes are not in session. This allows your Scout to make productive use of idle time. These can be pursued in addition to the badges a Scout can achieve at the camp classes. Some badges require work to be done prior to arriving at camp. Others, such as Geology or Environmental Science, will be completed much more easily if advance work is done.

T10-B First Year Scouts will have Swimming and Environmental Science, pre-assigned for them. Forestry will be assigned for Scouts that have already completed Swimming. They can also easily earn other merit badges in our campsite during free time. First Year Scouts will participate in the First Year Camper Program as well, which will help them complete most of the Scout Skills requirements for the first three ranks. (Tender-foot, Second Class and First Class)

Scouts who have previously attended Bartle should examine the Merit Badge Schedule and complete the Merit Badge Sign-up Form marked (Not for first year Scouts). It is wise to select alternates for courses that will fill up quickly such as lakefront, climbing and shooting. Some of these are lottery badges meaning we will not necessarily receive all the spaces we ask for and these will be awarded on the basis of seniority (age). Some last minute changes are always necessary, so please don’t be upset if your Scout does not get the badges for which they signed up.

Your Scout should have (or share) a copy of the current edition of the Merit Badge Book for the badges they are pursuing. Some may be available from the Troop Library, which will be available at the Merit Badge Sign-up and at other Troop Meetings. The Scout Shop has a supply as well.

Scouts who began work on Merit Badges at Summer Camp last year but didn’t finish can complete the badges at Camp this year. This information has been recorded in the Troop’s computer records. If a Scout wishes to finish that badge please, let the T10 Campmaster know before Camp or early on at Camp.

First Year Program - Mustang ScoutsThis program is designed especially for the first year camper. They will attend a special class each day where they will learn basic Scout skills required for the first three ranks, taught by our Adult Leaders and our older Scouts. Each first year camper in Troop 10 will be required to attend these classes.

As these skills are demonstrated the Scouts can have this information transferred to their Scout Handbooks and credited toward their Rank Advancements.

Also make note that Troop 10 encourages Scouts to present themselves for Scoutmaster’s Conferences and Boards of Review for Rank Advancement any time during Summer Camp.

Don’t forget your Scout Handbook. Bring it in a ziplock bag.

TROOP 10 BARTLE - Merit Badge Advance Work

Many of the Merit Badges your Scout can pursue at camp either: 1. Require work to be done before arriving at camp, or 2. Will be much easier to complete if some of the work is

done in advance.

Discussed below are various badges available at camp and the recommended or required advance work. If your Scout intends to pursue one or more of these badges, they should study the Merit Badge Book and complete the advance work as soon as possible.

Note: Parents of T10-B First Year Scouts: Your Scout will be assigned Environmental Science Merit Badge. It is vitally important that they complete the advance work as soon as possible. It is virtually impossible to complete this badge at camp unless the advance work is completed. We will be working on this at the First Year Scout Campout. Details are on the T10 website.

In every case, it is best to read the complete requirements in the Merit Badge Book.
