THE BIRTH OF JESUS, JOSEPH HOMILY SUMMARY FR ANDREW WOJTAN DECEMBER 22, 2019

The ancestry of Jesus is described as the fulfillment of all the prophets. Jesus is described as the Messi-anic King from the royal house of David. He has descended from His Father’s Kingdom on earth.

“Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of her (not of Joseph) was born Jesus who is called Christ.” Suddenly the male lineage stops and this child is born not of a man, but a woman. When Mt was writing his Gospel the major question of the Jews was, “Who was the Father of Jesus of Naza-reth?” Mt comes to Joseph, stops and says, “he is not the father.” It’s a very powerful message to the people of Israel. He must have left them completely shocked, because then he goes on to explain and to give them the text from Isaiah, “the virgin will give birth to a son.” Mt is saying to them, “go back to your Scriptures, God has already told you. All that I am presenting here is just the fulfillment.”

Mt gives the Annunciation through Joseph, which is very important. He says that Joseph was essential to the mystery of salvation. A Jewish boy took the most part of his education from his father. The father was the hero whom he followed. Only his father could take him to the Temple.

God decided to put His only Son in the hands of another person. Saying to Joseph: “it is your personali-ty that will be stamped on My Son; your teaching, your education, your guidance.” Mt underlines importance of family life. If Joseph would not have adopted Jesus, Jesus would not have been of the house of David, even though His Mother was of the house of David. It has to be through the male line. Joseph had to agree. It was through the adoption of Joseph that Jesus became the heir to the throne of David. By the time Jesus was born, He was the legal heir to the throne of David. Jesus is of royal lineage; He is rightfully a King.

In his Gospel, Mt presents Jesus with the backdrop of Moses as a King. Moses was an uncrowned king of Israel. Jesus also is the uncrowned King of Israel. The royalty of Jesus was acknowledged only in His Passion, in mockery, when they dressed Him in royal robes and put the reed into His hands. So, He represented royal dignity with the crown of thorns on His head. Jesus was en-throned on the cross in mockery, because they (the leaders) rejected Jesus completely.

The Church knows the mystery of faith. On Holy Saturday she looks at the cross and says: “God reigns from the tree.” Jesus transformed the cross into the tree of life. The tree of life and Paradise are restored. Mt makes it perfectly clear that the King lays down His life for His people. In giving up His life, Jesus shows what true leadership is, what true royalty really is. When Pilate said: “Behold your King,” he was saying something that he himself would have never understood. Because the King of Israel stood before His people, the humblest of all men of the earth. Jesus himself said, “who takes the least place on earth, gets the greatest place in heaven.” Proclamation from the cross means, “Jesus of Nazareth is the King of the Jews” whether they like it or not. So, the image of Jesus in Mt Gospel is, “Behold your King.”
