THINGS HAPPEN

THE NEW PRESIDENT

Dr. Gloria Dean Randle Scott

»!< Named IN<- Hi 'line (( lYcsulenl

fSl'OitThe big news at Bennett College is the arrival of a new president. Dr. Gloria Dean

Randle Scott became the school's eleventh president on the first of July 1987. For thesecond time in its 113 year history the school has chosen a woman president. Theannouncement was made in March of 1987 by Robert S. Chiles, Sr., Chairman of theBoard of Trustees and the presidential search committee.The new president is guided by an old adage: "Give a hungry man a fish and he's full for

a day; teach him to fish and he'll be full the rest of his life." After being up for apresidential position at five colleges previously, the feeling wasn't right. Scott says"Bennett felt right". Being president at Bennett provides her with the opportunity topursue a dual passion, academics and the advancement of her sisters. Scott also says that"I consider myself instrumental in promoting women and helping them go back to schoolas I was helped by other women." For Scott, things began to move full speed ahead; as shebegan to make plans for improvements and changes. Some of the improvements Scottwould like to see is an enrollment increase from 700 to 1000 in the next five years. Shefeels that a stable student body population would stabilize the budget. Scott's other goalsfor the college include computerizing the campus, improving campus facilities, increasingthe number of students attending graduate school, escalating student involvement, en-hancing alumnae relations, and much more. Scott plans to give all her time and energy toguarantee that Bennett College honors its legacy and builds a unique future.

Senior sisters sing their final song

Senior sisters rejoice together

We wanna thank you God, for giving us one morechance to raise our voices and sing your praise.

We sing it out loud, we sing it all day.

The class of '88 gives praise to only you,

We know it can't compare to a gift from you.

fou gave us your love, you gave us the faith.

We know there're some who don't believe

that at Bennett you'll fulfill your dreams.

We try so hard everyday, though things don't go our way

But to be without — is not his will,

Through prayer and faith we'll be fulfilled

And fortune is ours to claim,

We'll claim it in his holy name.

Now you don't have to beg or crawl,

He will see us standing proud and tall.

He gave his everlasting love, Just come to him as you are

ALMA MATERBennett now our voices raise,

Harmonies of grateful praise;

We thy daughters find thee fair

Loyally thy colors bear.

Truth and honor in thy halls,

Faith and love within thy walls;

Ever dear to us thou art.

Firm within each loyal heart.

CHORUSAlma Mater, now we sing.

Hail the light that thou dost bring;

True we've been throughout the past,

True to thee while life shall last.

May we never smirch the goodGendered here in sisterhood;

May we ever choose aright,

Guide but by honor bright;

Ever lovelier shalt thou live,

As thy daughters freely give;

Ever glorious above,Testimonies of our love.

'Til the evening shadows fall

'Til we heed our last clear call

Mother, may we offer theeLives of worth and purity?

Go with us throughout the years.

Smile on us in doubts and fears;

Bless us with thy tender care,

Mother, fairest of the fair!
