Perforated Felt
The young designers of Spanish furniture company ABR have done it again. A space divider made of felt, Feel-Thru is a curtain and screen in one. The softness and warmth of the perforated material makes it a perfect addition
to loft living. Designer Toni Palleja created two patterns: one consisting of a basic line of circles and the other a
combination of commas, exclamation marks and asterisks. The 39cm-wide and 250cm-high panels slide through a
curtain rod affixed to the ceiling and can be opened up and folded like an accordion. Feel-Thru is available in black
and unbleached. www.abrproduccion.com
The Art Of MosaicThe new 2009 mosaic tiles collection by Bisazza takes the concept
of tiling to completely new levels. Attention to detail means that the
mosaic tiles can be anything you want them to be: they can curve
around corners; they can be used as floor treatment; they will
attract attention wherever they are laid. Particularly notable in this
collection is the stunning French tapestry effect created through
intricate mosaics. Something completely different are the Corinzio
Wall mosaic tiles depicting Roman garden ornaments, which could
add a classy touch to any modern interior. Tel Bisazza sales office:

Its Not All About ChocolateDesigner Liset Van der Scheer created Bonnet in numerous
shapes, sizes and colours like chocolates in a box. The
funky pouffe covers and the throws, which come all the way
from Belgium, are knitted in merino wool and are easily mixed
and matched. Van der Scheer started out as a colourist with
a textile printer, and therefore places great emphasis on the
interactive influence between colours. Colour is dependent
on combination, structure, and the space in which a colour is
located. Each colour also has its own strength or appeal, she
explains. Discovering the right relationship and that unique
combination is a matter of intuition. Bonnet is part of the
Casalis soft furnishings collection. Casalis is represented in
Hong Kong by Design Link. Tel Design Link: +852 2838 8299

Space InvaderThis is the story of Jonas Jurgaitis, a Lithuanian designer who was
kidnapped by aliens ten years ago. After his miraculous return he
sketched a sofa with a message from outer space. Or is it another of
this enfante terribles make-believe stories? Take your pick. Either way
Alien remains an exceptional sofa. Nowadays spotting an article offurniture completely free of analogies is harder than ever before; in the
age of homages, revivals and inspirations, this out-of-nowhere piece
raises everyones eyebrows. Alien is made of moulded polyurethane
dreadlocks on a plywood frame with an armrest of lacquered solid
wood, and comfortably sits two. www.jonas-design.co.uk

Crazy About CartoonsRevisiting the timeless strength
of symbolism, Behrouz Kolahis
artistic-conceptual operation
challenges the common rug to
become an alternative support
for graphical experimentation.
Fumetto (Italian for comic) is a
line of rugs that playfully recalls
the graphical basics that inspired
the artists of Pop Art, focussing
on American vintage comics
and drawing on visual-syntax
ingredients. This limited-edition
collection is made up of a
selection of six onomatopoeias
using comical lettering. In
Fumetto, the rugs become a sort
of balloon, a graphic space
where portions of stories are told
in a single word, to stimulate both
seeing and hearing at the same
time. www.stilebk.it

Civil SculptureFrom Leonardo da Vinci to Le Corbusier, architects have always
been obsessed with the relationship between man and the ideal
proportions of his environment. Ideal dimensions determine
the spaces we inhabit but, do they work in a congested place
like Hong Kong? Local architect William Lims latest installation
Illegal Structurefocusses on the uncertainties and intervention
of life. In reality, illegal structures intervene and intrude into
existing environments an added balcony, an enclosed room
on a rooftop; an extra mezzanine... All these represent peoples
desire to claim more habitable spaces, but then these people
then face prosecution and emotional distress. Lims exhibition
copes with the emotional intrusion resulting from three large
installations of these illegal architectural spaces: Illegal Entry,
Show Flat and Exit. Illegal Structure is on show until mid March
at Tang Contemporary. www.tangcontemporary.com

expression of Innermost and its products as well as a space for
Hong Kongs art and design professionals to meet and share
ideas. Innermost is an innovative design house producing

All Mapped Out
Urban China, a mainland magazine devoted to urbanism, ventured out and commissioned an exhibition thatis now travelling the US. For its latest effort, Urban China: Informal Cities, the magazine extended its visionary
language of display, exploding it from its pages and into the three-dimensional space of a gallery. Urban
China uses informalism as a catchall term that combines notions of the informal, or underground economy,
with popular vernacular modes of remaking objects, buildings and lives. The idea of the informal is especially
consequential in light of the rigour with which Chinese cities have in fact been historically planned and policed, no
matter how chaotic they might appear on the surface. The exhibition is on view in New Yorks New Museum until
22 March and will travel to LAs Hammer Museum and the Museum of the Contemporary in Chicago thereafter.

Fabrics GaloreCan sustainability survive the global credit crunch?
That is the key question to which this years Interstoff,
showcasing the latest fabrics from around the globe,
seeks an answer. Besides sourcing textiles, a seminar
programme offers green business ideas to textile
and garment manufacturers, focusing on strategies
dealing with the current market challenges. Interstoff
also introduces new eco-labels, developed by Sachiko
Inoue, one of Japans top textile experts; to identify
and understand the raw materials and processes that
make fabrics eco-friendly. Highlights of the fair includenational pavilions from Japan, Korea and Taiwan and
special display forums for Spring/Summer 2010 trend
information. Interstoff Asia Essential Spring 2009 takes

Italian Booth DesignAfter having worked with Renzo Piano, Herzog & de Meuron and Shigeru Ban, Italian architect Stefano
Tagliacarne recently designed Danish furniture-maker Fritz Hansens expo booth at the 21st edition of
the International Biennale of Creative Interior Design in Kortrijk, Belgium. The installation observes the
same guidelines that Tagliacarne had developed for the companys showroom in Milan simple andrough materials whose natural structure and texture are the only decorative element of the design. Solid
walls of rough pinewood boards frame the 64sq m surface of the booth. The core element is a black
cubic structure at the centre of the space, housing Fritz Hansens latest products. www.fritzhansen.com

Printed PLYwoodAlexander Girards graphic prints live on long after his passing. The original artworks were made in
the 70s as silkscreen-printed fabrics for Herman Millers Environment Enrichment Panel Program. The
PLYwood versions are handscreen-printed on sustainably harvested maple plywood panels using water-
based inks. Girard made his name when he injected colour and vibrancy into the work of design icons
such as Charles Eames and George Nelson. His fearless approach to pattern and colour was unusual in
a post-war era that favoured minimalism. Girards work was fresh and contemporary, yet his inspiration
was drawn from traditional folk art. The 35 x 35cm panels unveiled by PLYwood come in six of Girards
extraordinary images. www.scp.co.uk
Zero-Emission Double-DeckerFoster + Partners, in collaboration with Aston Martin and Capoco Design,
came up with the winning concept for Londons new Routemaster double-
decker bus. Outfitted to combat environmental challenges, the new bus
is zero-emissions-ready and will set new standards for sustainable public
service vehicles. The atrium-style upper deck offers passengers enhancedviews of the city while the glazed roof, outlined with solar cells, generates
power and assists with internal cabin temperature control. The lower
deck features a warm living-room-style setting with wooden floors and
reconstituted leather seating. The new design also re-introduces a rear
open-access platform and will offer a side entry for physically challenged
riders and families with small children. www.fosterandpartners.com

The Raw and The ReclaimedUhuru, a small New York-based design-and-build furniture
company, is dedicated to sustainability and timelessness. All its
furniture is made out of reclaimed, recycled, repurposed or reused
materials. Its Parker Coffee Table, for instance, is constructed from
100% reclaimed timber sourced from beams, joists and support
columns retrieved from buildings being renovated or demolished
in the city. Due to the age of such buildings, the wood is often
first-growth heart pine, from trees that were three or four hundred
years old when cut. The growth rings are thus very close together,
producing a very dense, stable, beautifully grained material.
The table also utilises traditional hand-cut joinery and a hand-
rubbed finish. Parker is available in various reclaimed woods.
