3 a (i) Diffraction is the phenomenon of bending or spreading out of waves when they travel through a small opening or when they pass round a small obstacle.

(ii) The phase difference (φ) between two particles or two waves tells us how much a particle (or wave) is in front of or behind another particle (or wave). The value ranges from 0 to 2π radians.

(ii) Two waves are considered to be coherent when they maintain a constant phase difference between them. Note: Coherence should be explained as a property of the waves as opposed to the light source. For light waves, it is impossible to get coherent light waves unless they start from the same source. There are frequent irregularities in the wave created by any light source. These irregularities cannot be matched even in the case of two waves coming from seemingly identical but separate laser beam sources.

Students may be tempted to say that in deriving the ratio in a(ii), we have used the nucleon numbers which deviate slightly from the actual mass of the nuclei (measured in a.m.u).
