Extended Dominants

• Extended dominants use mixolydian chord scales (the same as V7/V)

• The first chord in an extended dominant pattern should use mixolydian without alterations

• Once the pattern has begun any subsequent extended dominant scale may be mixolyidan with alterations.

• As a general rule, all dominant chords with expected resolution down a perfect fifth use a mixolydian scale (with or without alterations).

Related IIm7 chords

• Related IIm7 chords use dorian chord scales (the same as IIm7)

• Avoid notes are not available harmonic tensions but are available as melodic approach notes.

• Avoid notes are non-chord tones a half step above a chord tone except:– Avoid the 6th degree for IIm7 chords– On dominant chords, b9 and/or b13 are available,

but b13 and 5 should not be used together.

Other Major Key Chord Scales• If the IV chord is preceded by its dominant,

an ionian scale is used• If the IV chord is followed by the VIm, an

ionian scale is used• Non-diatonically rooted major chords use

lydian• Modal interchange chords borrowed from

parallel minor keys use the following chord scales (in a major key context):

Modal Interchange

• Both Im7 and IVm7 chord scales are dorian when the chords appear in a major key context

• Dorian is an appropriate chord scale for either IVm7 or IVm6

• IVm6 and IVm(maj7) may use the melodic minor scale because it contains both and maj7 and a 6

depending on the context.
