CONDITION OF WEEKLY REPORTING MEMBER BANKS IN LEADING CITIES
The c o n d i t i o n statement of weekly report ing member "banks in l e a d i n g c i t i e s
shows the f o l l o w i n g p r i n c i p a l changes f o r the week ended August 30: A decrease of
$168 m i l l i o n i n loans adjus ted; i n c r e a s e s of $135 m i l l i o n i n ho ld ings of U. S . Gov-
ernment s e c u r i t i e s , $436 m i l l i o n in demand d e p o s i t s adjusted, and $106 m i l l i o n i n
time and savings d e p o s i t s ; and decreases of $173 m i l l i o n i n U. S. Government demand
d e p o s i t s and $525 m i l l i o n in demand d e p o s i t s c r e d i t e d t o domestic "banks.
Commercial and i n d u s t r i a l l oans decreased i n most d i s t r i c t s and a net of
$45 m i l l i o n ; they decreased $ 6 7 m i l l i o n during the comparable week a year ago. Loans
t o brokers and d e a l e r s f o r purchasing or carrying U. S. Government s e c u r i t i e s de-
creased $127 m i l l i o n . Loans t o noribank f i n a n c i a l i n s t i t u t i o n s decreased $40 m i l l i o n .
"Other" loans increased $29 m i l l i o n .
Holdings of Treasury "bil ls Increased "by $ 2 3 1 m i l l i o n , and the combined
t o t a l of Treasury n o t e s and U. S . Government bonds decreased by $95 m i l l i o n .
Demand d e p o s i t s adjus ted increased $122 m i l l i o n i n New York City, $ 8 3 m i l -
l i o n each i n the Chicago and San Francisco d i s t r i c t s , and by l e s s e r amounts in a l l
but four other d i s t r i c t s .
Borrowings of weekly report ing member banks from Federal Reserve Banks
increased $21 m i l l i o n and borrowings from o thers increased $106 m i l l i o n . Loans t o
domestic commercial banks increased $2 m i l l i o n .
