This little house is in strono contrast to the shinaled Kehoe House next door. It too was moved to Broadway from Gordon Street, but there the similarity stops. This house is a narrow shotgun style house which presents its gable end to the street like others all over Town. What raises this house to middle class status is the L-shaped veranda on slender doric columns. Set on a large lot, well back from the street, and with flower plantings around it, it, too, looks friendly and inviting. It is a good example of what can be done to the humble shotgun house.

DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (IF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

This small, two bay, two story shotgun house is at 58 E. Broadway in the Town of Bel Air, Harford County, Maryland. It is aluminum sided and its gable roof is covered in asphalt shingle. In 1904 the house had a bay window in the south bay of the east elevation; the remnant is the double window there now. The northernmost bay was a single story (probably kitchen); it is now two story with an enclosed gable roofed porch in the west bay of the north elevation. The windows are 6/6 double-hung sash and the door in the west bay of the front (south) elevation is 6 pane over panel.

What gives this tiny house its distinction is the hipped-roof porch supported on thin doric posts which runs across the front and along the west side the length of the original two story block to a side entrance. A plain capped chinmey rises in the gable of the north elevation.

This is a bright and cheerful house despite, or because of, its small size and simple design.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

The date of this small house is uncertain. Local legend has it being moved to this site from Gordon Street. It was not on the lot when Benjamin F. Minnick bought it from Harvey Jones in 1883 (48/141). It appears on the 1904 Sanford Map. Similar shotgun style houses were being built in Bel Air from 1875 to 1910. It may have been on the lot when Minnick transferred the lot to his wife in 1900 (100/171). Minnick was in ill health and pursued by debtors. The transaction suggests he wanted to secure a roof for his wife before everything collapsed. He died in August and a lengthy legal wrangle ensued.

Mrs. Minnick sold it to John Henry Shannon in 1915 for $900 (147/159). The )hannons lived there the rest of their days, and Mrs. Shannon left it (will 30/541) to her daughters, Helen S. Coale and Florence S. Coale. They sold it to Robert V. Bullis in 1970 (859/446). The Bullis's sold it to the present occupants, Stephen and Deborah Everett in 1978 (1056/556).
