The Preface to the Dye & Garman text states that health care leadership is different.
Expand on that statement, explaining how and why it is different. Use the information
contained in the Study Notes as the basis for your discussion. If you believe that
healthcare leadership is not different, you may discuss that as well.
Choose one of the leadership characteristics discussed in this lesson and discuss why
it is important. In your discussion, identify a situation in which you have seen that
characteristic demonstrated. In that situation, how was the characteristic evidenced?
Was it effective? If so, how? If not, why not?

3. Assignments
The article “Is Your Organization a ‘Learning Organization?’" defines learning
organizations. Does the organization where you work (or one where you have
worked) fit the definition? If it does, give two examples of how it does so. If it does
not, explain why and suggest ways in which it needs to change to meet the definition.
We recognize that the article is aimed at top-level administrators who have the ability
to implement change. If you are not in such a position, try to think of what you would
do if you were.
Leadership Assessment Survey:
The purpose of this assignment is to assist you in assessing your personal leadership
style and skills. It involves completion of an online survey. Dr. Andrew Garman, co-
author of Exceptional Leadership: 16 Critical Competencies for Healthcare Executive
Page 7 of 12
(2006), has developed a competency-based assessment tool, which we have provided
for you with his permission. It is an easy-to-take survey, using SurveyMonkey.
You will take the survey online. When you submit the completed survey, I will be
providing you with a summary of your responses, which will allow me to give you
feedback. That feedback will assist you in completing the Final Project (Week 6:
Online).
A couple of important notes:
1. The results of the survey are confidential (including some demographic data) and
will not be revealed to anyone else. The purpose of the survey is to help you. The
aggregate data (without your personal identification information) may be used by
SJC to assess how well the program is helping students to become competent as a
leader in healthcare.
2. You should answer the questions honestly and to the best of your ability to assure
you get the best value from it.
3. The results of the survey will not affect your grade. Simply completing it will
satisfy the requirements of this assignment.

COURSE GUIDELINES
Guidelines for Online Portions: Week 1 & Weeks 3 - 6
Instructor’s Notes
In each weekly online lesson you will find notes that I have added to assist you in understanding
the reading assignments and how they fit into the overall course. These comments are similar to
what I will make in week 2 in the classroom. You should read them just as you do the formal
required readings. In fact, I suggest that you read them before reading the other materials. They
constitute an integral part of the course material. In the Notes, I regularly refer to the formal
readings, but do not attempt to repeat them. The purpose of the Instructor’s Notes is not to
restate the readings, but to make them more meaningful. It is particularly important in a course
such as this, where we are using more than one reading source.
Written Assignments
NOTE: Your written assignments in this course are all essay-form questions. The purpose of the
assigned questions is to assist you in thinking about the reading assignment and instructor’s notes
presented and applying this material to the context of your own experience.
It is expected that you will include information from the texts, the study notes, and your own
experience when responding to the assigned questions. While there is no minimum or maximum
number of pages required, it is very important that you respond to all aspects of each question in
a comprehensive manner reflecting that you have integrated the information you have studied.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions as you work through the
assignment. I prefer to assist you before the assignment is submitted rather than wait until you
have done the work in error. Our interaction is an important part of the learning process.
Let me suggest that in completing your assignments you strive for detail and depth in your
answers. Remember that your written assignments are the only basis on which your instructor
can assess your progress in the online portion of this course. Watch for errors in spelling and
grammar. Errors and a sloppy presentation distract from the content of your work. Be conscious
of the impression it makes.
All of your written assignments must be completed in Times New Roman font, in a
12-point font size. Your margins must be set at one-inch on all sides and your work must be
double-spaced. All references must be documented using APA style.
Many of the questions have multiple parts. Be sure not to skip any. The first written assignment
is a good opportunity for me to see the quality of your work and to react to it. In addition, each
assignment builds upon the last one; therefore I ask that you not submit another assignment until
you have received my feedback on the previous one. I suggest that you complete your written
assignment, then set it aside for a day or two and review it one last time before sending it in.
Your written assignments will be graded according to the Assignment Rubric provided in this
syllabus. You should read that rubric before beginning an assignment.
Online Discussion Requirement
Participation in class discussion is an essential aspect of this course. Discussion topics have been
posted for each week to build an online classroom environment and apply course concepts to
real-world situations. It is expected that you will read and respond to the discussion topic each
week. Your post should include relevant comments that will add to the discussion and
demonstrate critical thinking.
Your discussion contributions should conform to the Discussion Rubric provided in this syllabus.
Guidelines for In-Class Week 2 Portion
This hybrid course includes one week of in-classroom instruction. We will meet three hours/day,
from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Reading Assignments
There will be assigned readings for each class, which you are expected to read prior to the class.
Class Discussion/Participation
My practice is not to “teach” or “lecture” for the full class session. Instead, I will present topics
and issues for class discussion. All class members are expected to participate in the discussions.
It is understood that students will have a variety of experience and expertise, and I will work to
assure that no student is made to feel inadequate or left behind.
Assignments
There will be no written assignments during the on-campus week. However, students may be
given verbal assignments to prepare for the following day’s discussion. For example, they may
be asked to think about a particular experience they have and to be prepared to discuss it the next
day.

Resources/Policy section of the course homepage. On this page, you will find vital information,
