All childminders who care for children under the age of 8 years must be registered and inspected by the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted). The childminder and all those over 16 years living at the same address must have a Criminal Records Bureau (DBS) check. Childminders who care for children over 8 years can go on the voluntary part of the Childcare Register.

Childminders must be familiar with the Early Years Foundation Stage and they must have a current paediatric first aid certificate. Brent Council also offers many opportunities for further training and professional development.

Allow time to choose a childminder. Make appointments to see at least two and give enough time to talk about all your concerns. If you decide not to visit, please cancel your appointment as the childminder may have arranged her day to see you. Think about your questions first – some are listed below – and make notes of the answers.

What you need to knowChildminders are self-employed, may be registered for up to six children under 7 year olds; of these not more than three may be under 5 year olds and of these, usually not more than one may be under 12 months, including the childminder’s own children.

Some childminders work with assistants who may be a family member or a friend who comes to their house.

All registered childminders must display their certificate and also hold a current Public Liability Insurance Certificate.

Childminders must have safety equipment such as smoke alarms, fire blanket, stair gates as appropriate.

All aspects of care should show an understanding of equal opportunities with reference to gender, ethnic origin, culture, diet, religion and special needs.

Some questions to ask when you contact childminders

What is your experience of looking after children? How many other children will be with my child and how old are they?

Can I contact other parents to get references? Do you have a fire and emergency drill? What sort of local trips out and regular activities do you do and is there an extra charge for

day trips? If you use a car with the children, does it have the right car seats and are you insured to

use it for work? Can you deal with special dietary requirements? How do you respond to challenging behaviour? Can you tell me about the Early Years Foundation Stage and how you keep records of a

child’s progress? What is your setting in period – That is, how do you support children to get used to you and

your home. Can we have a trial run, say a couple of mornings, to see how things go (settling in period).

First impressions can tell you a lotDid you feel welcome and at ease? Does the hygiene of the home meet your standards? are the gates and fences secured, is the play equipment safe, clean, and in good repair does the childminder listen carefully and give thoughtful replies, were you invited to view the premises unhindered and did other children present seem happy?

Ofsted reportsThe children and Families and Information Service website provides links to childminders, latest inputs. Newly registered childminders do not have reports available but to register, they must meet the national standards for childminding.

Contracts

Brent CFIS advises you to have written contract with terms and conditions on rates of pay, holiday pay, sick pay, who provides meals, hours of attendance, review date of contract, period of notice to be given etc. Childminders may prefer not to care for sick children.

Later changes to the contract must be signed and dated by both of you. Contracts are legally binding between the childminder and parent. You both keep a signed

copy. If you do not get a contract you will have nothing to support you if you feel that the

arrangement is not turning out as you expected. Call the Pacey on 0300 003 0005 if you any questions. This arrangement is strictly between the childminder and parent. If you are not satisfied with childminder on grounds of childcare standards, you may

complain to Ofsted, Early Years Office, Piccadilly Gate, Store Street, Manchester, M1 2WD telephone 0300 123 123.

Early Years Health Guidelines

Physical Activity in the Early Years1.    Physical activity should be encouraged from birth, particularly through floor-based play

and water- based activities in safe environments.2.    Children of pre-school age who are capable of walking unaided should be physically active

daily for at least 180 minutes (three hours), spread throughout the day.3.    All under-fives should minimise the amount of time spent being sedentary (being

restrained or sitting) for extended periods (except time spent sleeping).

Examples of physical activity that meet the guidelines:

For infants who are not yet walking, physical activity refers to movement of any intensity and may include:

‘Tummy time’ – this includes any time spent on the stomach including rolling and playing on the floor

Reaching for and grasping objects, pulling, pushing and playing with other people ‘Parent and baby’ swim sessions Floor-based and water-based play encourages infants to use their muscles and develop

motor skills. It also provides valuable opportunities to build social and emotional bonds.

Minimising sedentary behaviour is also important for health and development and may include:

Reducing time spent in infant carriers or seats Reducing time spent in walking aids or baby bouncers (these limit free movement) Reducing time spent in front of TV or other screens

What are the benefits of movement?

Develops motor skills Improves cognitive development Contributes to a healthy weight Enhances bone and muscular development Supports learning of social skills
