Kris is currently employed by Southern Nuclear at Plant Vogtle as the Plant Manager’s Senior Secretary. Habitat for Humanity of North Augusta
seeking candidates for House No. 18
By Marlene Fernandes, Family Support HFHNA Chair
A young lady and her two children ages 2 and 4,
was referred to Habitat for Humanity North
Augusta by a co-worker. She visited a previous
Habitat home and liking what she saw diligently
filled out the partner application. Meeting all the
requirements she was selected as the homeowner
of house No. 17. A dream in the process of being
fulfilled for this lucky family, House No. 17 is made
possible through donations and plenty of volunteer
workers.
The tempo builds every Saturday, as a new phase
of the construction process is started. Much is
accomplished each Saturday and Monday by
Habitat for Humanity North Augusta (HFHNA)
members and volunteers. Our volunteers come
from the community, many from Mt. Vintage, Fort
Gordon, local churches and businesses like
Bridgestone.
The HFHNA Board is staffed by 100% volunteers.
Local community members donate their time to
improve the lives of our partners. The Family Support
Committee acts as a liaison between the HFHNA Board
and partner homeowners. Family Support assists the
excited new homeowner making many selections. They
get to pick the color of the siding, roof, and shutters on
the outside. The inside choices are flooring, kitchen
cabinets, knobs, blinds, and lighting for their new home.
When complete this young family will have a beautiful
and functional 3 bedroom, 2 bath home.
Family Support also helps guide the partner through the
financial and mortgage process of owning a HFHNA home.
Ownership is by no means free. The prospective
homeowner is required to work 200 hours of sweat equity
and meet basic financial standards. The initial 50 sweat
equity hours are accomplished doing community service
work and the balance of the hours are actually working at
the construction site. The monthly interest free mortgage
is made affordable and includes an escrow account that
pays for property taxes, home insurance, annual termite
inspection and also a maintenance account.
Donations and volunteers are critical to our success. We
accept donations of appliances, furniture, and building
materials. But the most important part of that success is
seeking qualified candidates who are interested in
partnering with Habitat for Humanity of North Augusta.
We are starting house No. 18 soon and need our next
partner.
Interested families are encouraged to apply at
www.hfhna.org. The HFHNA Board thanks all of our
generous sponsors, donors and hardworking volunteers
in supporting our community.
