Presented by: Midhesh Mahadevan
What Is Habitat?
• Habitat is the place where a plant or an animal is naturally found.
Is zoo the habitat of a tiger?
No, because zoo is not the place where tiger lives in nature. A tiger lives in a forest.
• An organism’s habitat provides it everything it needs to survive, like food and shelter.
• The home of an organism is also within it’s habitat.
Types Of Habitats
There are five major types of habitat on our planet:
Forests
Grasslands
Deserts
Mountains and Polar regions
Aquatic Habitat
Forests
Forests are large areas covered with trees and plants. Forests cover about one-third of our planet.
Several types of plants and animals are found in forests.
Examples: Bear, pigeon, bear, monkey etc.
Types Of Forests
• There are three types of forests-:
Tropical Forests
Temperate Forests
Boreal Forests
Temperature ranges from 20 degree to 30 degree
Temperature ranges from minus 30 degree to 30 degree
Temperature ranges from minus50 to 30 degree
Annual rainfall exceeds 200cm
Annual rainfall is less than 150cm
Annual snowfall varies between 40 to 100cm
Most trees are evergreen
Most trees are deciduous
Most trees are evergreen
Grasslands
• Grasslands are areas covered with grass. There are not to many shrubs or trees here. Temperature varies from -20 degree to 30 degree. Annual rainfall is between 40to 90 cm. Animals like giraffe, zebra, lion, elephant and gazelle are found in grasslands.
Deserts
• Deserts are areas that receive very little rainfall. Daytime temperature in summer can reach 45 degrees. There are also cold deserts such as the Gobi dessert in China. Animals like camel, rattlesnake, Gila monster and Kangaroo rat are found in desserts.
Mountains and Polar Regions
• Earth’s polar regions and tall mountains are very cold. The lowest temperature ever recorded in Antarctica is -88 degrees. Animals like polar bear and walruses live in polar regions. Mountain goat, sheep, yak found in mountains.
Aquatic Habitat
• The aquatic habitat comprises all the water bodies on the planet. Fish, frogs, ducks, swans are animals in aquatic bodies.
Types of Aquatic Habitat
There are three types of aquatic habitat:
Freshwater habitat: Rivers, lakes, ponds and streams are examples of freshwater habitat. Lotus and water lily are examples of plants living in freshwaters
Marine habitat: Oceans and Seas are examples of marine habitat. Fish, whales, sharks, jellyfish, crabs, starfish are animals in marine habitat
Coastal habitat: Regions where the land meets the sea. Crabs, oysters live in coastal areas. Plants like mangroves and seaweeds are plants near the coastal areas.

What are Coral Reefs?
• Coral-reefs are rock-like structures made from the skeletons of small ocean animals called corals. They are called the ‘rainforests of the sea’ as they provide shelter to many sea animals.
