HACKNEY:DEFININGURBAN LIVING
1 2 1 3
In Hackney Central, with its celebrated CulturalQuarter, the scene is different again. HackneyCentral art, is art with a street edge. Raw.Immediate. Original. Hard. It’s real – and it’severywhere, from the quite brilliant graffitiscene to the work of local studios and artistsjust starting out with an altogether fresh vision. All over the borough there are festivalscelebrating everything from the work of localfilm-makers and performance artists to originalmusic, contemporary dance and world culture.Hackney is where contemporary art comes aliveand finds a new and vital expression.
Once one of London’s best loved Victorian music halls, the Hackney Empire on Mare Street still knows how toput on a show. A local gem, it features top music actsas well as comedy, dance and opera and has justenjoyed a sumptuous £15 million renovation. Also onMare Street, the Hackney Picturehouse shows all thelatest blockbuster films as well as featuring seasonsspotlighting more unusual and independent works. There are regular live simulcasts from the world’s topvenues, bringing the finest in classical music, opera, ballet and dance onto the local big screen andnumerous special events throughout the year. Loversof classical music will appreciate The Hackney Proms, formed to introduce more high-quality orchestralmusic to the cultural life of Hackney.
THE HACKNEY ARTS SCENE ISINCREDIBLY RICH AND DIVERSE, FROMTHE AFFLUENT GALLERIES OF HOXTONAND SHOREDITCH TO THE INDUSTRIALSTUDIO COMPLEXES OF HACKNEY WICK.
THE SHOCK OF THE NEW SITS SURPRISINGLYCOMFORTABLY ALONGSIDE THE APPRECIATIONOF MORE TRADITIONAL FORMS OF ARTISTICEXPRESSION. GET INVOLVED AND ENJOY THEBEST OF BOTH WORLDS.
