Bookworm program publishes student storiesBy KYLE CARNEY

It has been 15 years now sinceformer Elizabeth Haddon Princi-pal Michael Wilson initiated theBookworm Program. We wantthem talking to each other aboutwhat they write, Wilson saidthen.

The program continues tothrive in the school. Any studentat Elizabeth Haddon Elementaryis able to write a story and havethat story bound and published inthe school library.

The students love seeing theirwork bound and displayed, Cur-riculum Coordinator and soon tobe Principal Gerry Bissingersaid. Its a tradition here at theschool, and we will continue topromote the program.

This year, 57 students complet-ed stories. Those students wereawarded certificates at the Book-worm Assembly on June 12.Guest speaker Mike Nuckols, au-thor of Kid Dad Fun the iPad app,also gave a presentation at the as-

sembly to get the students excitedabout writing.

Nuckols has been writing formore than 20 years in the adver-tising industry and reflected onhis approach to writing. In hispresentation, Nuckols outlinedthree keys to writing:

1. Write2. Find a way to love it3. You cant write what you

dont knowEach year, a local author or il-

lustrator is invited to the assem-bly to promote literacy and helpconnect young readers to books

and the creative process, Book-worm Committee Co-Chair Lau-

rie Verderame said. Nuckols wasvery energetic and inspiring, sowe hope the students will be as

passionate as he is about writ-ing.

The Bookworm Program al-lows students to write about any-thing they want, Bissinger said.There are no limitations or re-strictions put on them as to howthe story must be written.

After the students enjoy theirbook with their families, they areplaced in the library for other stu-dents to read.

The student books are themost widely circulated books inthe library, current PrincipalCraig Ogelby said.

The PTA-sponsored programrelies on volunteers, and Ogelbywas quick to thank all those whomake the program what it is.

We want to thank all the par-ents and PTA members who helpwith the Bookworm Program,Ogelby said. These volunteersnot only support the program, butthey also do a lot of work. Thestudents books are bound and

formatted by parent volunteersand PTA members, who make allof this possible.

In the 15 years since theprograms inception 1,534books have been published. Thatis over 100 stories per year on av-erage.

Elizabeth Haddon Elementaryis the only elementary school inthe district with a BookwormProgram.

Summer reading programs atthe Camden County Library andlibraries across the nation willtake a totally new direction in2014 with a focus on science, tech-nology and math.

As part of an ongoing campusrevitalization effort, ElizabethHaddon Elementary School un-veiled its new outdoor classroom.Thanks to funding by the PTAand the Fifth Grade Remem-brance Committee, teachers willhave the opportunity to engagestudents through outdoor learn-ing, giving them the opportunityto connect and learn from nature.

Andy Williams, father of anElizabeth Haddon student, did all

of the construction, which in-cluded stadium seating and thefabrication of workstation tables.The project was commissionedand completed in three weeks,and two classes were taught inthe outdoor space the first day itwas made available. According toincoming principal GerryBissinger, "The outdoor class-room adds to our strong educa-tional program through takinglearning beyond the classroomwalls. It provides a place where

our students can gather, learn to-gether, innovate and be inspiredin new ways. This space provides

an accessible area where studentscan gather as a class on the stadi-um seating as well as work insmall groups at the picnic tables.The faculty is very appreciative ofthe work the PTA and Andy havedone to revitalize this space."

Studies have shown that chil-dren are more motivated to learnwhen given the opportunity toparticipate in an outdoor class-room environment. The outdoorexperience engages young stu-

dents, fostering imagination andcreativity, while emphasizing theinterconnectedness of all things.Reports also show that teachersexperienced a renewed sense ofexcitement about teaching. In anage when technology reigns, anoutdoor environment is a refresh-ing change of pace.

Initiatives such as the new out-door classroom and a school gar-den that was established and in-corporated into the curriculumthree years ago blur traditional

academic learning boundariesand show that innovation is aliveand well in public education.

Tatem school students thinkschools need air conditionersWe are rising fifth graders at Tatem Ele-

mentary School, which was built in 1923. Inthe spring, early summer and first fewweeks each fall, we are always hot andsweaty after recess and lunch. Thats be-cause at Tatem, only nine of our rooms are

air-conditioned. (Our last cool class waskindergarten and first grade!)

We did some research and it seems theother two elementary schools also havethis problem. Elizabeth Haddon has only 10of its rooms air-conditioned and Central

Elementary has seven rooms that are keptcool when the temperature goes up.

It can be hard for kids to concentrate inschool when we are hot, sweaty and un-comfortable. After recess, we turn our twofans on and our lights off to try to keep theroom as cool as possible. We need a brainbreak, and having our classroom air-con-ditioned would help.

We know air conditioning is expensive,

but maybe Haddonfield could buy windowunits, since they last a long time. We wouldbe willing to give up assemblies for coolerrooms. We think that all of the HaddonfieldPublic Schools should have air condition-ing.

Starting this week, high school

seniors throughout New Jersey

will be wrapping up their final

days of class, taking their final high

school tests and walking onto their

high school field one more time for

graduation.

Its an exciting time in the life of a

young man or young woman. The final

week of high school, the graduation

ceremony, the hugs and congratula-

tions following, the celebrations that

will last throughout the summer and

the packing for, the drive to and the ar-

rival at college are memories gradu-

ates will remember fondly.

To all the grads out there, while you

may want to rush these last few days

so school can be out for summer, and

so high school can be out forever, re-

member to savor every remaining mo-

ment.

This may not mean much to you

right now, but there are experiences

you will have in these next few days,

these next few months, that you will

never replicate again. There are peo-

ple you will graduate with some

friends, some acquaintances, some

whom you grew up with whom you

may never see again. There are some

whom you are close with now who you

will grow apart from over the years,

and yes, there are some whom you will

grow closer to as your lives change.

Those wistful days of no responsi-

bility will be behind you. Soon, you

will be on your own. You will have the

freedom to eat pizza for breakfast, stay

up until 4 a.m., take a nap in the mid-

dle of the day, go berzerk at a sporting

event wearing your schools colors and

skip a class if you want to note: we

dont recommend that last one.

The label high school student

came with a lot of restrictions on your

freedom, but it also gave you a get-out-

of-jail-free card, or cards. Once gradua-

tion is over, that label goes away. All

freedoms given to an American adult

will be yours.

But so, too, will all the consequences

of your actions. The decisions you

make from as serious as do I study

for this test? to should I eat another

burrito? will all have results that

will affect your life. Its a lot of respon-

sibility. Its a good thing, for sure, but

it can also be a scary thing, becoming

an adult.

So, again, while you still have the

option, live life as a kid one last

time. Savor these last few days of high

school. And be confident that you will

do just fine.

Danielle Coates, a senior andmember of the National HonorSociety at Haddonfield MemorialHigh School, was named one of200 state finalists in the NationalHonor Society Scholarship fromNASSP. These 200 NHS state fi-nalists were first chosen fromamong nearly 5,000 applicants.Each finalist receives a $1,000 col-lege scholarship.

"Haddonfield Memorial HighSchool is proud of Danielle re-ceiving the National Honor Socie-ty Scholarship. She is certainlywell-deserving; the consummatewell-rounded student with di-

verse interests. Danielle is theideal representation of the valuesof NHS, scholarship, leadershipand service, noted CharlesKlaus, principal of the highschool.

Participating National HonorSociety chapters from across thecountry nominated at least twosenior high members to competein this year's program. Finalists

were selectedon the basis oftheir leader-ship skills,participationin-service or-ganizations,clubs andother studentgroups atschool and inthe communi-ty; and theiracademic record. As a finalist,

Coates is recognized as one of thetop 200 NHS members in the na-tion this school year.

While at Haddonfield Memori-al High School, Coates has beeninvolved in numerous extracur-ricular activities, including varsi-ty crew and serving as presidentof DECA and front ensemble sec-tion leader of the Marching Colo-nials.

This fall she plans to attendPrinceton University to study en-gineering.

quito Commission encour-

ages residents to be extra

vigilant in eliminatingstanding water as they safe-

guard their yards against

mosquitoes, especially in

view of the prevalence of

West Nile Virus (WNV) and

Eastern Equine Encephali-

tis (EEE). Our county mosquito commission

checks a few thousand mosquito breeding

sites on a regular basis. This keeps the mos-

quito population low and breaks up the cycles

where diseases are spread.WNV grows in birds, and is transmitted

from bird to bird by infected mosquitoes.

WNV generally causes no symptoms or mild

flu-like symptom s. How ever, those over 50 or

those with a compromised immune system

are at a higher risk of more severe disease.

EEE is a mosquito borne infection of wild

birds that can be transmitted to other birds,

humans, horses and other animals by mos-

quitoes. EEE attacks the central nervous sys-

tem, causing sudden fever, muscle pains and

a headache of increasing severity, often fol-

lowed quickly by seizures and coma.

While the chance of becoming ill from

WNV or EEE is small, there are things people

should do to protect themselves and their

property this summer.

Residents should check their property for

any object that holds water for more than a

few days. All pre-adult mosquito stages (eggs,

larvae, and pupae) must be in stagnant water

in order to develop into adult mosquitoes.

Swimming pools are a common problem.

All pools must be checked and maintained to

keep them mosquito-free. Pool covers can

catch rainwater and become a mosquito de-

velopment site.

Maintain screens to prevent adult mos-

quitoes from entering

your home or business.

Personal protection

is strongly urged if youare outside when mos-

quitoes may be active

generally dawn and

dusk. Insect repellants

containing between 10

to 35 percent DEET.

The Camden County Mosquito Commis-

sion suggests checking around your yard for

mosquito breeding containers. The following

is a checklist of t ips to help eliminate mos-

quito breeding: Dispose of unnecessary containers that

hold water. Containers you wish to save turn

upside down or put holes in the bottom so all

water drains out.

Lift up flowerpots and dump the water

from the dish underneath every week.

Stock fish or add mosquito larvicide to

ornamental ponds.

Change water in bird baths, fountains,

and animal troughs weekly.

Screen vents to septic and other water

tanks.

Store small boats upside down and large

boats so they drain. If covered, keep the tarp

tight so water does not pool on top of the tarp.

Do not dump leaves or grass clippings

into a catch basin or streams.

Do not allow water to collect on sagging

tarps or awnings.

Do not allow trashcan lids to fill with

water.

For a tennis program with as

rich a history as Haddonfield Me-morial High School, its tough tohave any new firsts. But the boystop doubles team of Isaak Ander-son and Sam Oberholtzer did justthat, winning the first male statedoubles championship in schoolhistory.

Anderson and Oberholtzer en-

tered the state tournament as theNo. 1 seed. The duo met second-seeded Justin Patel and Jessie Ko-rovin from Livingston High

School in the finals and prevailedin three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. The re-sult was not a surprise to theircoach.

"I really thought this was possi-ble for Isaak and Sam, Haddon-field coach Jeff Holman said."They played together last yearagainst some tough competition,

and I thought with another yearof experience they would contin-ue to improve. We played a verytough schedule this year, and it

was clear that they were able tocompete against the best playersin the state.

Haddonfield has had two statetitles in doubles but both hadcome from the girls program.Victoria Martinez and CatherineSenopoulos in 2011 as well asArpie Senopoulos and Erica Pas-cocello in 2012 won previously.

Anderson, a senior, finishes hisplaying career at Haddonfieldwith 166 victories, the highest

number of wins in school historyfor a male player. CatherineSenopoulos holds the femalerecord with 168. Andersonsrecord may not stand for long,though because another Haddon-field player is off to an impressivestart. That would be Andersonspartner, Oberholtzer.

In addition to claiming theschools first male double title,Oberholtzer, only a sophomore, isthe first player, male or female, inschool history to win 50 or more

matches in a single season, finish-ing the 2014 season with 52 victo-ries. Though he wasnt sure itwas record, even he will admit heknew it was an accomplishment.

I figured that no one had got-ten to 50 before but I didnt knowthat it was a record or anything. Ithought it probably was arecord, Oberholtzer said. Its acool thing definitely, especiallybecause the school has had somany great players.

Anderson is one of those greatplayers that Oberholtzer got anup close look at.

Its a lot of fun playing togeth-er. Isaak is a great teammate,Oberholtzer said. Our styles mixperfectly because I tend to bemore of a safe player and hesmore aggressive.

The good news for the statesother doubles teams? Oberholtzerwill most likely not be back to de-fend his crown.

My goal is to switch to a sin-

gles player next season. Ive had alot of good experience in my twoyears as a doubles player, and Imhoping to use that as a singlesplayer next year, Oberholtzersaid.

The future of the Boxwood

Hall property did not become anyclearer after the public hearingon June 10.

Borough officials have pro-posed to buy the property at 65 N.Haddon Ave., which is a protectedproperty due to its inclusion onstate and federal historic regis-ters.

It is anticipated that a mix offunding sources, which could in-clude state grants, county or localopen space trust funds, municipalbond proceeds and private dona-tions, could be used as paymentfor the property, CommissionerJohn Moscatelli said.

While the bond ordinance wasapproved on June 10, the agree-ment for the purchase of theproperty has still not been final-

ized. Borough commissioners areseeking to borrow $1.8 million tobuy the property from owner anddeveloper Bill Burris. Burriscould not be reached for com-ment.

Im confident we will have asigned agreement within the nextcouple weeks, CommissionerNeal Rochford said.

According to the commission-ers, as part of this purchaseagreement, the current court casebrought by the owner against theborough will be dropped.

Burris filed the lawsuit afterthe zoning board rejected his plan

to build an apartment building onthe property.

The lawsuit is a major part ofthis agreement, Rochford said.

Not going to court will save a lotof taxpayer dollars in litigationfees.

The Boxwood Hall property in-cludes the historic building, asmall building and a large back-yard that may be turned into apark. Boxwood Hall currentlyhouses a real estate business.

The future use of the buildingsis just as hazy as the future of theproperty itself. There are a fewdifferent ideas being tossedaround by commissioners, in-cluding the potential sale of thebuildings.

Future use of the property, in-cluding the buildings and yard, aswell as any division of the proper-ty for private and public owner-ship, will be determined after ad-ditional public discussion andinput from the residents over thecoming months, Moscatelli said.

For residents who support thepurchase of the land, the issue ismuch the same as the 605 War-

wick Development debate: thechanging of Haddonfield.

Chairwoman of the Haddon-field Historic Preservation Com-mission Lee Albright is one sup-porter of the preservation of theland.

It's such a significant propertyin town," she said. "If we can pre-serve it and use it, it would be agreat benefit."

Discussions between the bor-ough and Burris are set to contin-ue over the course of the month.

If the borough comes to anagreement with Burris, MayorJeff Kasko believes the boroughwill be able to pay off the bor-rowed money in about a year.
